After distancing himself from the June 4 RCB felicitation event for days, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has now changed his stance — he said he was consulted for the Vidhan Soudha function.
The Karnataka government went ahead with a felicitation ceremony for IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Vidhana Soudha on June 4, despite a clear warning from the police about potential security risks. Later that evening, a massive crowd of fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for celebration of RCB's maiden trophy win in 18 years, resulting in a stampede that left 11 people dead.
Siddaramaiah had earlier said his government the state administration had no role in organising the felicitation event at the stadium and that he was merely invited to the Vidhan Soudha function.
'On the 4th of this month, the KSCA and RCB representatives held a felicitation programme for the players. At around 11:29 am, I was invited. They requested to hold the programme, and I agreed. The Chief Secretary also called me about this, and I said yes."
'The governor also attended the felicitation. The media is played it out in such a way, saying that the governor came of his own volition. That's not correct."
'My political secretary Govindraj called up the governor and handed me the phone, telling that the governor too was coming. I told the governor that since I was attending, he should attend as well. He attended, and the felicitation ended in 20 minutes due to the rains. He left from there, and I headed back to my residence," said the CM.
In a letter dated June 4, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) MN Karibasvanna had warned of security concerns and flagged these to the DPAR.
In a letter addressed to DPAR head G Satyavathi, Vidhana Soudha security division officials flagged serious concerns about inadequate personnel to manage security arrangements for the high-profile event.

Gill scored his century in 140 balls, making him the fifth Indian to have scored a century in his first Test as captain. He was dismissed on 147, trying to hit a six and complete his 150, but he was caught on square leg off Shoaib Bashir. Kotak also praised Pant for his brilliance in the middle. He felt the wicketkeeper/batter makes his decision when he bats and he plays aggressive shots, which does not mean that he can't play defensive cricket. "Rishabh Pant, I think, is someone who makes his own plans, makes his decision when he bats, so this inning was a little different than you would see him normally, but that is his plan, the way he wanted to approach it, and when he wanted to attack, he did. So, because he plays aggressively, it does not mean that he can't play defensively," he added. Pant was eventually dismissed on the second ball of the 108th over for 134 by Josh Tongue. India squandered the advantage in the first session on Day 2 as the side lost four wickets in the last half an hour. Shubman Gill (147), Karun Nair (0), Rishabh Pant (134) and Shardul Thakur (1) all lost their wickets. A century by Ollie Pope and his partnership with Ben Duckett helped England put up a strong reply against India in their first innings, ending the final session of day two of the first Test on a high. England earlier made a strong comeback, dismissing India for 471 after the visitors had ended the day yesterday on 359 for three and looked poised for a huge score. At the end of the second day's play, England were 209/3, with Pope (100*) and Harry Brook (0*) unbeaten. They trail by 262 runs.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in the process of implementing strict guidelines for IPL trophy parades and celebrations in the wake of the Bengaluru stampede that took the lives of 11 people and left several others injured last month. Thousands had gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)'s maiden title win, just hours after they beat Punjab Kings in the final. Multiple events being held at the same time, and a lack of infrastructural readiness, led to one of India's biggest sporting disasters this century. The BCCI had initially distanced itself from the tragedy, saying it had no role in it, and then formed a three-member committee led by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, with vice-president Rajeev Shukla and treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia as members. India Today quoted Saikia as saying that the board was 'taking every aspect of risk very seriously to avoid any future mishaps.' The report included a list of guidelines that, according to Saikia, would now be mandatory for all IPL franchises wanting to celebrate a win. These disbar teams from holding celebrations within three to four days of winning the title, and strictly prohibit quick turnarounds or rushed celebrations. All events will now require prior and written clearance from the BCCI, and formal approval from district police, state governments, and local civic authorities. The Karnataka government has already proposed a new crowd management bill, which holds event managers responsible and imposes fines and upto three years of imprisonment. 'Four bills were proposed today — Karnataka crowd control, managing crowd at events and venue of mass gathering Bill, 2025; Karnataka Rohith Vemula Bill, 2025; Karnataka misinformation, fake news prohibition Bill, 2025; Karnataka hate speech and hate crimes prevention Bill, 2025," Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil told reporters on June 19. 'These Bills were proposed at the meeting today. I mentioned that on some Bills there is a need for a detailed discussion. It has been decided that before the next cabinet meeting, concerned ministers will meet and discuss and bring the Bills before the cabinet," he added.
