
From Hype To Infrastructure: The Great Compression Of Health AI

The generative AI boom in healthcare feels inevitable. Every week, a new vendor promises to reimagine clinical workflows, redefine care management or reshape revenue cycle operations. Billions are pouring into startups, tech giants are repositioning and healthcare incumbents are scrambling to stake their claim.
But beneath the noise, the real AI arms race is quietly underway—and winning it requires more than flash, jargon or even technical prowess. It demands discipline, clinical credibility and a long view of how the industry's foundations are shifting.
As the cofounder of a health AI startup and someone who has spent a decade in healthcare and data science—from the halls of Harvard to the trenches of health plan operations—I've seen the real trenches and the real hype. And I can tell you: The AI arms race in healthcare is very real. But it's not what you think.
Let's be clear: Healthcare has been burned before. Blockchain, virtual reality, wearables: Each had moments where hype outpaced reality. I think generative AI is different, but not because it's immune to exaggeration.
The difference is that GenAI genuinely has the potential to replace rote administrative tasks, streamline care delivery and change how data moves through the healthcare system. Early proofs are real, and we are seeing firsthand streamlined prior authorizations, faster risk adjustment coding and more humanlike patient engagement.
But these examples are narrow. A model that drafts a prior authorization letter isn't the same as a system that understands patient context, payer policy nuance and clinical appropriateness at scale. Copywriting is easy. Clinically meaningful transformation is not.
Still, I see some vendors are serving up the same old drink. If a pitch centers around an AI that can "talk like a doctor" without having deep clinical oversight, be skeptical. If it relies solely on fine-tuning open models without access to proprietary, real-world healthcare data, be even more skeptical.
And if it suggests that technology can replace clinical judgment wholesale—not just augment it—you're not dealing with a serious player. You're dealing with an "intention impostor": a founder who may believe in their mission but lacks the operational, regulatory or clinical sophistication to actually deliver it.
Healthcare isn't a sandbox. It's a high-stakes, highly regulated environment where the cost of failure is patient harm, and the cost of overpromising is industry fatigue.
So, how do you separate noise from signal? Start with team composition.
True healthcare AI players blend technical excellence with clinical credibility. Look for former clinicians, policy experts and health plan operators at the leadership table—not just advisors used for window dressing.
Second, scrutinize the problem they're solving. Is it rooted in collaboration with existing workflows, or does it presume clinicians and operators will change overnight? Healthcare doesn't bend easily to technology. The solutions that work will complement human decision-making, not try to outshine it.
Third, assess their attitude toward regulation and liability. Serious players view HIPAA, CMS guidelines and AI-specific governance as the price of entry, not a hurdle to "hack."
Finally, and most importantly, watch who trusts them. Meaningful pilots, real integrations with major payers or providers as well as tight partnerships matter. The best early indicators aren't flashy logos; they're renewal rates, expansion contracts and references from customers who are hard to impress.
In an arms race, speed matters—but substance wins.
The startups and incumbents pulling ahead are moving fast and building for durability. They're investing in proprietary data partnerships today to future-proof their models. They're building modular, interoperable platforms instead of narrow-point solutions.
They're also deeply integrating into existing vendor ecosystems. The players who realize early that they must be an API, not an island, will pull ahead. Those who assume they'll own the whole stack will face slow adoption, frustrated users and dwindling investor patience.
Healthcare is the ultimate trust-based system. Every new technology must prove it deserves a seat at the table—not just once, but every day.
Perhaps the least discussed but most profound outcome of this AI arms race will be the collapse of the current vendor landscape.
Historically, health plans and providers bought solutions for prior authorization, care management, risk adjustment and member engagement from different vendors—each with siloed data, rules engines and interfaces.
I view AI as eventually breaking that model. Large language models (LLMs) and foundational healthcare AI platforms aren't task-specific; they're context-specific. The same longitudinal patient record that powers faster prior authorization can also power smarter care management workflows, risk stratification and value-based care initiatives.
What does this mean? It means many of today's seemingly distinct categories will likely converge into a few dominant layers:
• Data orchestration
• Clinical knowledge modeling
• Application-specific workflows
I believe vendors that can plug into these layers will be the ones to thrive. Vendors that can only operate in isolation—no matter how good their specific application—will risk becoming redundant.
Expect a wave of acquisitions, mergers and even outright closures over the next 24 to 36 months. Expect a few dominant AI platforms to emerge—ones that health plans, providers and life sciences companies use across functions.
In the end, healthcare won't have 50 different AI partners. It will have a handful of trusted foundations, each deeply embedded into clinical, operational and financial lifeblood.
The AI arms race in healthcare is real. But it won't be won by those shouting the loudest. It will be won by those who build quietly, partner wisely and think long term.
In a world where data, models and workflows converge, the winners won't just automate tasks—they'll transform how healthcare is delivered, trusted and experienced. Sorting glitter from gold has never been more urgent—or more valuable.

3 simple recipes that make eating fewer ultra-processed foods easy, by a nutritionist
Ultra-processed foods have been linked to health issues such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. While they can be convenient, they should be eaten in moderation, a nutritionist said. Rhiannon Lambert shared recipes for granola, flatbreads, and chocolate peanut bars. In recent years, ultra-processed food has been the subject of endless news reports, books, and online debate. But while research increasingly points to the potential health risks of UPFs, including cardiovascular disease and cancer, they shouldn't necessarily be demonized, the UK-based registered nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert told Business Insider. Processing food can preserve it better, or make it more accessible, she said. "I think UPFs have a place, but they should not be consumed as frequently as they are, and they have become a problem in the sense that most people are now missing out on whole foods by opting for ultra-processed foods instead," Lambert said. In her new book, "The Unprocessed Plate: Simple, Flavourful UPF-free Recipes to Transform Your Life," Lambert explains what people need to know about UPFs and shares recipes to help you eat fewer of them. Below are three recipes that are easy to make from scratch so you can avoid buying ultra-processed versions. Easy yogurt flatbreads "These flatbreads are such a useful recipe to have up your sleeve, and you can use whatever flour you have to hand. Each type of yogurt and flour has different hydration levels, so this recipe is just a guide — if you find the dough is too dry, add splashes of water until it comes together; if you find it's too wet, simply add more flour," Lambert wrote. She continued: "Once you've got the hang of the basic recipe, feel free to experiment by adding some of the optional extras to the dough. The flatbreads are also delicious brushed with a little melted butter as they come out of the pan." Prep: 10 minutes Cook: 10 minutes Nutrition per portion: Fiber: 3.1 grams Protein: 13 grams Ingredients: 400 grams (3 cups/14 ounces) white spelt or wholemeal flour, plus extra to dust 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon olive oil, plus extra for frying if needed 200 grams (1 cup/7 ounces) skyr, Greek yogurt, or coconut yogurt Optional extras: Freshly ground black pepper Grated garlic Nigella seeds Cumin seeds Chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves Sliced spring onion (scallion) Desiccated (dried, shredded) coconut Method: 1. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl, then stir in the olive oil and yogurt (add any additional extras now, too). Mix with your hands until the dough comes together, then tip onto a flour-dusted surface and knead for a couple of minutes until you have a smooth dough. Divide the dough into six equal balls, cover with a clean tea (dish) towel, and allow to rest for at least 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, set a griddle pan or non-stick frying pan (skillet) over a high heat. 3. Roll each dough ball into a flatbread shape about 20 centimeters (eight inches) long and two millimeters (1⁄8 inch) thick. If your pan isn't non-stick or you want a slightly crisp finish to your flatbreads, brush both sides of the flatbreads with a little olive oil. 4. When the pan is searingly hot, add a flatbread to the pan and cook for 60 to 90 seconds until char marks appear, then flip it over and cook the other side until nicely charred too. Wrap the flatbread in a tea (dish) towel while you cook the rest. Seedy granola "This is such an adaptable recipe that you can make based on what you have in your store cupboard or your personal preferences for flavor and crunch. I love it, as it provides my family and me with lovely healthy fats and fibre for the day ahead. Serve as it is with your preferred milk, or top with fresh fruit and yogurt," Lambert said. Prep: 25 minutes Cook: 40 minutes Nutrition per 40-gram portion: Fiber: 3.3 grams Protein: 5.3 grams Ingredients: 175 grams (6.5 ounces) jumbo oats 175 grams (6.5 ounces) barley, spelt, or rye flakes (or simply use more jumbo oats) 150 grams (5.5 ounces) nuts, roughly chopped (I use a mix of almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, and walnuts) 150 grams (5.5 ounces) seeds (I use a mix of pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, and flaxseeds) 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, or cardamom (or a mix) (optional) 50 grams (5 tablespoons/1.75 ounces) coconut oil 100 grams (1⁄3 cup/3.5 ounces) maple syrup 4 tablespoons almond or peanut butter (optional) 75 grams (2.75 ounces) organic* dried fruit, roughly chopped (I use a mix of dried apricots, figs, dates, cranberries, and sour cherries) Sea salt *Select organic dried fruit to ensure it doesn't contain additives like sulphur dioxide Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 160°C/140°C fan/325°F and line your largest baking sheet with baking paper. 2. Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. 3. Melt the coconut oil in a small saucepan over a low heat (or melt in the microwave for 30 seconds). Stir in the maple syrup, nut butter (if using), and a pinch of salt, then mix until fully combined. Pour over the dry ingredients and stir until everything is nicely coated. 4. Spread out in an even layer on the baking sheet and bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden, stirring and tossing occasionally so that it cooks evenly. 5. Leave to cool on the tray, then stir in the dried fruit. 6. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. Note: You can cook this using your air fryer too. Heat the air fryer to 160°C/325°F and air fry for 10 to 12 minutes, tossing occasionally. You may need to air fry the granola in two batches depending on the size of your air fryer, for ultimate crispness. It will crisp up further as it cools. Chocolate, peanut, and date bars "Sticky, nutty, and chocolatey, these are the ultimate pick-me-up. You can slice these into smaller bars if you like, but be aware that you may need a little more chocolate to coat all of them. In the summer, I love to eat these straight out of the freezer sprinkled with a tiny pinch of flaky salt," Lambert said. Makes about 15 bars Cook: five minutes Nutrition per bar: Fibre: 3.3 grams Protein: 5 grams Ingredients: 75 grams (3⁄4 cup/2.75 ounces) jumbo or rolled oats 300 grams (10.5 ounces) pitted Medjool dates 4 tablespoons smooth peanut butter 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract 0.25 teaspoon sea salt 80 grams (2.75 ounces) unsalted roasted peanuts 175 grams (6.25 ounces) dark (bittersweet) chocolate (at least 75% cocoa solids), broken into small pieces 2 teaspoons coconut oil 1. Line a 20-centimeter (8-inch) square cake pan with baking paper, with plenty of overhang. Place the oats in a blender or food processor and blitz to a fine flour, then tip into a bowl and set aside. 2. Place the dates in the blender or food processor (no need to clean it) with the peanut butter, vanilla, and salt. Roughly blitz, then slowly add 75 milliliters (five tablespoons/2.5 fluid ounces) of water until you have a smooth, thick paste. Be sure to scrape down the sides occasionally. Remove 300 grams (10.5 ounces) of the date mix to a bowl and set aside. 3. Add the oat flour back to the blender or food processor with the remaining date mix and pulse a few times until it's nicely combined. Tip the mixture into the base of the lined pan and use wet fingertips to spread it into a smooth layer that fills the tin. 4. Spread the remaining date mixture on top, smoothing it with a spatula. Evenly sprinkle over the nuts, pushing them in a little. Place in the freezer for at least six hours or ideally overnight until frozen and firm. 5. Lift the frozen slab out of the pan and slice into 15 bars. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. 6. Add the chocolate and coconut oil to a heatproof bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water and heat until just melted, stirring to combine. Alternatively, heat in a microwave on the lowest setting in 30-second blasts, stirring between each, until just melted. If you have a cooking thermometer, the chocolate is ready when it reads 45 to 50°C (113 to 122°F). 7. Working one at a time, submerge the bars in the melted chocolate, using two forks to turn them. Lift out of the bowl using the forks, allowing the excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl, then transfer them to the lined sheet. Once all the bars are coated in chocolate, return the sheet to the freezer or fridge for at least 15 minutes until the chocolate is set. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks or freezer for up to four weeks, but I assure you they won't last long! Note: If you can't find roasted peanuts, simply use unroasted peanuts and roast them in the oven at 180°/160°fan/350°F for eight to 12 minutes until golden. Then use in the recipe as specified.

High on hemp? New study warns ‘intoxicating hemp' products are everywhere.
The culprit? Intoxicating hemp. Easy to buy at gas stations and corner stores across Massachusetts, hemp products can resemble the candies that they are sold alongside. Some allege they are marketed to children, unexpectedly potent, and not subject to age verification. Advertisement 'The kids will say it's a Rice Krispie treat they found on the ground, but it's not,' Madsen said. Hemp products 'can be tough for the nursing staff to diagnose, and it makes our job of keeping these students safe more difficult. It's everywhere.' The alarm at Springfield High only adds to the concerns about hemp, a pocket of the marijuana industry that has grown exponentially in recent years. Related : Hemp was legalized federally in 2018 to aid its commercial use in textiles, construction, and industrial agriculture, and it typically has a low concentration of THC, the intoxicating compound weed is known for. By law, manufacturers are not allowed to infuse hemp with enough chemical compounds to cause psychoactive effects or change its composition to replicate a marijuana high. Pseudo-legal hemp products are cropping up at convenience stores across Massachusetts, says a new study, which claims they are often mislabeled and can pose substantial health risks. Brett Phelps for The Boston Globe Intoxicating hemp can be A new white paper from Easthampton-based cannabis operator INSA shows that the public health concerns may be well-founded. The company — which faces stiff regulations as a licensed cannabis business — purchased dozens of hemp products at eight stores in Boston, Framingham, Pembroke, Springfield, and Worcester and tested them at Green Analytics laboratory in Framingham. It revealed that hemp products are often mislabeled and more intoxicating than the law permits. Nineteen of the 21 smokable hemp products violated the federal limits for intoxicating compounds and contained unsafe levels of pesticides and other contaminants, based on Massachusetts regulations for the legal cannabis market. Some packs of the hemp gummies had 500 mg of THC per serving, 100 times the state's 5 mg limit, according to the study. And the THC in a 'Trippy Diamonds' cannabis vape cartridge sold over the counter was 80 percent delta-8, a psychoactive compound that is illegal in Massachusetts, the study reported. Advertisement It also reiterates fears among highly regulated cannabis dispensaries and growers that unlicensed hemp is siphoning away business from the legal market. Licensed cannabis operators are heavily taxed in Massachusetts and held to testing and age verification that hemp products are not. And while cannabis sold at dispensaries must be plainly packaged and kept in child-safe containers, hemp edibles come shaped as bears, rings, and gummy worms, often with 'colorful packaging, catchy product names and cartoon imagery,' according to the report. Brett Phelps for The Boston Globe 'These products present a real and present danger to Massachusetts consumers, especially children, which danger will only amplify as more and more manufacturers, who face negligible risks of enforcement or penalties, flood the market with greater quantities of untested products,' reads the report, authored by the Boston law firm Foley Hoag. Not every store that sells hemp products does so openly, said Steve Reilly, co-owner and director of government relations at INSA, which commissioned the white paper. While buying products for the study, Reilly found one corner store that sold empty hemp cartridges at the register, while the owner offered full ones from his car. Others displayed hemp chocolates alongside rolling papers and glass bowls for smoking and marijuana buds at the counter — a practice that is illegal in Massachusetts, but rarely enforced. 'Why would we do all this with legalization if we allow illegal sales to undermine the market?' Reilly asked. 'You don't need to change the law. You just need to enforce it.' Above-board hemp farmers and manufacturers argue that there are many good players who abide by the federal limits. Advertisement Christopher Lackner, president of the Hemp Beverage Alliance, said his members, who manage 140-some brands, commit to including warning symbols, chemical compound labels, and QR codes that link to product safety results on packages. 'We have no interest in confusing the consumer,' Lackner said. 'We want to empower them with information that allows them to make a smart choice.' Social media is littered with ads for hemp products that can be bought online. Consumers are rarely equipped to distinguish the good from the bad in hemp products, and it can even be hard to know just how potent a hemp product will be, said Jeff Rawson, founder of the Institute of Cannabis Science in Massachusetts. When testing products himself, Rawson saw that potency of hemp edibles and pre-rolls purchased outside of dispensaries deviated from the products' labelling by as much as 34 percent. By Rawson's calculations, consumers are four times more likely to get an accurate product in a dispensary than a smoke shop or gas station. Some in the cannabis industry are warning that more regulation is needed around the sale of intoxicating hemp products at corner stores and smoke shops around Massachusetts.
