It seems the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities are not interested either t de appealing the BBMP authorities to take over its land that is allegedly encroached by Sri Muthyalamma Devi Temple Trust.A Dengue cases wreaked havoc in Bengaluru in July last year. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had reported 5,172 cases across its eight zones.This time around, BBMP's Health Department appears to be tackling the issue head-on.In less than two weeks, the department has reached out to 1,349 schools across the city, spreading awareness about the issue among more than 21K students and educating nearly 15K teachers in spotting and clearingsites.'We started dengue awareness sessions in government and private schools across the city on June 2. Our sessions were aimed at sensitising students about the virus and educating them about the mosquito breeding cycle. We informed them how mosquitoes require stagnant water to breed, and thus, they should always get rid of stagnant water around their homes, including from flower pots. Teachers were trained to spot breeding sites in and around the school premises and clear these spots,' said an official from BBMP's Health Department.Officials say many such efforts have been taken up this year so far, and the impact is visible. In May 2024, as many as 782 dengue cases were reported from all eight zones under BBMP limit. However, only 299 dengue cases were reported in May this year. Similarly, while 1,804 cases were reported in June last year, so far only 185 cases have been reported in June this year.Cases were low even during January to April this year, when compared with last year's cases.'The number of dengue cases has been much lower this year, even though Bengaluru has experienced more rainy days compared to 2024. We have also increased our reporting units. This proves that measures taken this year have been effective. However, since July is expected to have more cases, we are reviewing cases every day and mobilizing on-ground volunteers based on case load,' said the official.Notably, as many as 700 volunteers and 240 health inspectors were deployed recently by the Karnataka Health Minister to take up mosquito breeding control measures across all eight zones of BBMP.The civic agency has also been imposing fines on commercial establishments, under-construction buildings, and residential apartments across the city that fail to prevent the breeding of dengue-causing mosquitoes on their premises.According to the department, so far, more than Rs 36 lakh in penalties have been generated through a little over 3,500 notices issued to various establishments. The majority (a little over 450 notices) were given in Bengaluru East.

BMC squads destroy 50kg stale food in eateries
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: Food inspection squads of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday destroyed 50 kg of stale and contaminated food during checking of several hotels and restaurants in the city. The drive was carried out in view of jaundice and diarrhoea cases being reported from several areas. The inspection was carried out at Chandrasekharpur and IRC Village, from where multiple samples were taken for laboratory testing. Some food items, which had gone stale and were stored in unhygienic conditions were destroyed. "The surprise food quality inspection has been on since diarrhoea cases were reported in the city and it will continue. On Saturday, a penalty of Rs 8,000 was imposed on three hotels. They were warned not to serve stale food. If the hotels repeat the practice of serving stale food, they will be slapped with closure notices along with a penalty," said designated food safety officer Satyajit Patel. The usual practice is leftover food on a given day (till night) is kept to be mixed up with freshly cooked food. This makes them unhygienic," Patel added. Food safety squads said fast food items and some local delicacies are mostly dumped at the source itself. "So far bacterial contamination has been detected in three food samples. Now, we will randomly check panipuri (gupchup) and dahi bara-aludam stalls to find out if the water they use is contaminated," Patel said. Laboratory tests also ascertain if any colour and preservatives that are not permissible in food are used. BMC officials said there are some shops, including eateries, which mostly carry out their business in the evening. Hence, the SHINE team has been asked to move around the eateries in the evening as well.
