Paralympic sport gets spotlight in LA 2028 as city unveils plan for accessible, athlete-friendly Games
LOS ANGELES, June 4 — Events for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games will be held in downtown LA, Exposition Park, Venice Beach, Long Beach, Carson and Arcadia under the venue plan released by Games organizers LA28 on Tuesday.
Like the LA Olympics, the Paralympics will seek to take advantage of the city's vast network of existing sports venues when it hosts the event for the first time.
Downtown LA will be a major hub of activity with wheelchair fencing, para judo, para taekwondo, boccia and para table tennis all held at the Convention Center.
'By hosting multiple competitions side by side, the events will encourage constant movement, shared fan engagement and a festival-like environment that highlights the diversity of athletic performance,' LA28 said in a release.
Wheelchair basketball will be held at Crypto.com Arena, home of the NBA's LA Lakers, with the US men's team looking to capture a fourth consecutive gold medal.
Goalball, a sport designed exclusively for people with visual impairments that requires total silence from the crowd, will take place at the nearby Peacock Theater in an acoustically optimised setting.
LA Memorial Coliseum will host para athletics and the Paralympics closing ceremony, while the opening ceremony will be held at Inglewood's SoFi Stadium, home of the NFL's Rams and Chargers.
Galen Center will host para badminton and wheelchair rugby, Carson will stage para archery, wheelchair tennis and para cycling, while Arcadia's Santa Anita Park will be the site of para equestrian.
On the west side of the city, Venice Beach will host para triathlon and mark the starting point of the para athletics marathon, while Long Beach will host seven events including para swimming, blind football and para climbing's debut.
The most gender-balanced Paralympics yet will award the most medals in its history and feature 4,480 athletes across 23 sports.
With every competition taking place within a 35-mile radius, the venue plan seeks to minimize travel times for athletes staying in the Paralympic Village.
'The Paralympic Games showcases the highest level of athleticism, skill and endurance and it is important for LA28 to deliver a plan that not only elevates Paralympic sport but brings it to the next level,' said LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover.
LA Mayor Karen Bass said the Games would provide an opportunity for LA to improve inclusive accessibility citywide.
'The legacy of these Games will be imprinted on our city forever – proliferating beyond the boundaries of these venues to better all of Los Angeles,' she said.
The Paralympics will be held from August 15-27 in 2028. — Reuters

MIAMI GARDENS (US), June 21 — Bayern Munich booked their place in the knockout stages of the Club World Cup with Harry Kane and Michael Olise on target in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Argentina's Boca Juniors yesterday. After defeats for Paris Saint-Germain against Botofogo and Chelsea against Flamengo, Bayern bucked the trend of European teams falling to South American opponents with an accomplished victory in the Group C encounter. Hard Rock Stadium was packed to the rafters with Boca fans who once again brought incredible passion and noise to the NFL stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins. But Bayern soon set about quieting the 63,587 crowd with Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka taking charge of central midfield and the movement of Bayern's frontline stretching the Boca defence. The German side thought they had the lead in the eighth minute when a corner from Olise passed untouched through a crowded six-yard box and into the net. But the referee was called to the monitor for a VAR review where he was able to clearly see that Serge Gnabry had blocked and tangled with Boca goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin, and the effort was ruled out. Ten minutes later, however, Bayern had the breakthrough when Boca were unable to fully clear a ball into the box and Kane pounced with a clinical left-foot shot into the bottom corner. Bayern smelled blood and pushed for a second — Olise found Gnabry on the right and his low ball across the face of the goal was just inches away from the sliding Kingsley Coman. Boca desperately needed to find a foothold in the game and they came close when a thundering free-kick from Kevin Zenon was punched out by Manuel Neuer. Moments later Zenon tested the Bayern keeper again with another fierce strike which Neuer punched away with his right hand. Olise's decisive blow But for all the signs of life from Boca, Bayern looked in comfortable charge of the game and Kane was close to making it 2-0 with a dangerous free-kick which dipped just too late and flashed over the bar. Bayern continued to look for a second after the interval and the busy Olise should have done better from close range but couldn't connect properly with an off-balance shot. Boca never gave up harrying and grafting though and their reward came in the 66th minute. On a turnover in midfield, Alan Velasco found Miguel Merentiel down the right and he powered goalwards, skipping around Josip Stanisic before producing a brilliant, confident finish past the helpless Neuer. It looked like South American clubs' unbeaten record in the tournament so far was going to hold, but with six minutes remaining Olise provided the decisive blow. After a scramble on the edge of the box, Kane found the France international with a delicate lay-off with the outside of his foot and Olise provided precision control with a superb side-foot finish into the corner. Konrad Laimer thought he had wrapped up the win with a third moments later but he was ruled offside. It was the first loss for a South American side in the competition and it leaves Boca with just one point going into their final game in the group. NBA great Vlade Divac injured in Montenegro motorcycle crash
BELGRADE: Former basketball star and LA Lakers centre Vlade Divac is recovering today after breaking his hip in a motorcycle accident in Montenegro, hospital staff told AFP. The 57-year-old was injured late Thursday after falling from his motorcycle near the coast, said hospital spokeswoman Ljubica Mitrovic. "Divac was immediately brought to the hospital in Risan, where doctors conducted thorough examinations," she said, referring to a town about 47 kilometres (29 miles) west of the capital Podgorica. "Unfortunately, it was confirmed that he had suffered a hip fracture. Surgery was performed." Divac is in a stable condition at the hospital. Drafted into the NBA in 1989 by the Los Angeles Lakers, the towering centre became one of the first European players to make an impact in the league. He played seven seasons for the Lakers before moving on to the Charlotte Hornets then the Sacramento Kings, and eventually finishing his NBA career back with the Lakers. Mentored by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, he quickly adapted to the NBA and became the first player born and trained outside the United States to play more than 1,000 games in the league. A silver medallist in Olympic basketball with both Yugoslavia and later Serbia, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010. He played 117 games for the national team of Yugoslavia and later Serbia and Montenegro, winning World Championship titles in 1990 and 2002, and was also crowned European champion in 1989, 1991, and 1995.
