The special ticketed event was one of SXSW London's biggest draws and comes after days of live performances and thought-provoking panels throughout Shoreditch. The Stage has become a staple at SXSW in Austin, with 2025 headliners including John Summit, Koe Wetzel and Grupo Frontera in a genre-busting showcase of some of music's most sought-after names.
It's another crowning glory for current Billboard cover star Tems following her rapid rise over the past few years, culminating in a Grammy win in 2025 for best African music performance. Speaking to Billboard on her success and staying authentic, she said, 'It feels good to be able to do this on this scale. My life is a dream.' Tems released her debut album Born in the Wild in June 2024 to critical acclaim.
The Stage featured a number of performers during the night, giving punters at the historic venue a glimpse of the present and future of music from both the U.K. and Africa. Botswana's Amantle Brown opened proceedings, with London-based rising star LULU. both appearing on the bill as well.
These are five highlights from The Stage's SXSW London debut.Following diverse, energetic selections from DJ Edith Escobar, Amantle Brown celebrated her home nation of Botswana in her passionate set to open the night of live performances. 'I'm all the way from Africa and Botswana,' she told the crowd, 'and out there, the industry is still growing, but you just know they are rooting for me back home,' she said as she proudly waved her home nation's flag onstage, thousands of miles away.London-based artist LULU. has made waves on the capital's live scene in recent months, fusing pop and R&B into her own distinctive sound. Performing cuts from her 2024 collection Dear Disorientated Soul as well as brand-new song 'Not There Yet,' she reminded the crowd that being creative is an essential need for all people and that 'no-one can stop you from doing' what you want as a performer. Her set – which included a cover of Bob Marley's' 'Is This Love' – was proof that her artistry is, indeed, unstoppable and brilliant.
Arriving to passionate screams, Tems told the crowd she was happy to be back onstage at what was her first show in London of 2025. Her set pulled heavily from her genre-blending debut Born in the Wild, expertly brought to life with Tems' hip-shaking stage presence, top-notch vocals and backed by a tight six-piece band.
Alongside her biggest hits, Tems played songs for her 'day ones,' including 'Higher,' showcasing vocal excellence in moments both euphoric and intimate. Fan favorite 'Found' saw Tems share the mic with eager stans in the front row and duetting on the song's memorable chorus.
'Love Me Jeje' brought the vibrant party to Troxy's historic dance floor, with its art-deco features withstanding the bouncing energy Tems and the crowd created together. 'Essence,' her collaboration with Nigerian giant Wizkid, took the vibes to brand new-highs, while closing tracks 'Me & U' and 'Free Mind' capped off a stellar evening for the global superstar in her adopted hometown.

'F1' Onscreen: Critics Weigh In on Brad Pitt's Racing Blockbuster

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With less than a week left for the release of the Formula One-based movie, F1, fan excitement is at an all-time high, with many awaiting a glimpse of what they could expect. Thanks to the press screenings for critics and audiences before the movie's release on June 25 (June 27 for North America), fans can now walk into the theaters knowing what to expect. F1's recent star-studded premiere in New York saw Formula One drivers, team principals, Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, and the crew make headlines with their appearances. However, what matters next are the reviews. IGN Starting with IGN, critic Clint Cage said that F1 has elevated the standard of sports movies. He said: "As a sports movie following some pretty tried and true tactics, F1 ups its game at every stage of things. This won't win it any awards for originality, but it still adds up to a real win." Brad Pitt, star of the upcoming Formula One based movie, Apex, and Damson Idris, co-star of the upcoming Formula One based movie, Apex, walk on the grid during the F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain... Brad Pitt, star of the upcoming Formula One based movie, Apex, and Damson Idris, co-star of the upcoming Formula One based movie, Apex, walk on the grid during the F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain at Silverstone Circuit on July 09, 2023 in Northampton, England. MoreAddressing the work of Director Joseph Kosinski, he added: "On a technical level, F1 is impeccably put together. Kosinski and his frequent collaborator, Academy Award winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda, put cameras in just... all the places. Picking up where they left off with Top Gun: Maverick, F1 is filled with impossible angles and quick, robotic pans that make us feel like we're at the mercy of these rocketship machines" F1 aims to showcase the premier class of motorsport to a wider audience in an authentic way, and IGN's review hints it has achieved that goal. Cage added: "There's a deep cultural familiarity with what a Formula One race is supposed to look like onscreen. F1: The Movie gets that too. One shot puts you intimately and dangerously into the driver's seat while the next feels broadcast-worthy. "The editing does the same as well, thanks to Stephen Mirrione, another member of the pit crew with an Oscar in the garage. F1 is cut beautifully and peacefully in stretches, chaotically and nervously in others." He added: "All the pieces that you'd expect are there - and, again, plussing up the 'familiar' is the best thing Kosinski and his crew have done with F1. They've built a super-charged vehicle that can outdo the competition on almost every level - give or take a two-and-a-half-hour-plus runtime." Rotten Tomatoes With a score of 88% on the Tomatometer, F1 seems to have made its mark. Here are a few reviews by critics: Samuel Leggett Jr. stated: "It has it all, amazing camera work, astonishing racing scenes and locations, a great cast, & electric chemistry from Idris and Pitt! This film is truly one of the best films this year & one of the best racing films of all time. Will leave you breathless!" Doug Jamieson wrote: "Visually, it's undeniably impressive. But strip away the carbon fibre, and what remains is a movie filled with clichés, weak character arcs, and a script that strains to be inspirational while instead delivering a lot of empty noise." Stephanie Zacharek stated: "Brad Pitt, at 61, has finally aged into roles like these. And sometimes, as F1 proves, they're the best thing that can happen to a guy." BBC Nicholas Barber of the BBC described F1 as "the slick and shiny new summer popcorn film." However, he pointed out that "the biggest issue with F1, though, is not its insistence on showing its leading man in a flattering light, but its equivalent, fawning attitude towards Formula One itself." Comparing Kosinski's work on Top Gun: Maverick, he added: "While Top Gun: Maverick was a masterpiece that pulled viewers into events in and out of the cockpit, F1 is simply a competently assembled collection of underdog sports-drama clichés. It never convinces you that its protagonists are human beings, and never persuades you that Ruben's team are more worthy of support than their competitors. I was more invested in the podrace in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace than any of the races here." Rating F1 two out of five stars, Barber said the movie is best-suited for F1 fans. He concluded: "Making a film about a series of long races just wasn't a bright idea. Formula One enthusiasts may disagree, and they may be delighted that their beloved motorsport has been put on the big screen in such a laudatory fashion. Everyone else: this is not where you want to be." Attractions Magazine Connor Webber of Attractions Magazine has praised F1, likening it to Kosinski's work on Top Gun: Maverick. He stated: "What the 'F1: The Movie' team was able to accomplish with the camera work and editing is unreal. My heart dropped watching the camera move while the car is racing at 200 mph. There are no punches thrown in this film, but it has some of the best action in any movie this year." Awarding F1 with a score of 4.5/5, he added: "Just like 'Top Gun: Maverick,' 'F1: The Movie' never forgets the human element: the heart, the relationships that make the spectacle matter. The performances here aren't just passengers in the ride - they steer it (hehe)."

Kate Middleton Shares Photo of Prince William with Latest Additions to Their Family Home to Celebrate His 43rd Birthday

Prince William is celebrating his 43rd birthday on Saturday, June 21 The Prince of Wales received birthday wishes from Kate Middleton and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis The message comes after William starred with his kids in two portraits released for Father's DayPrince William is being celebrated on his 43rd birthday by his wife, Kate Middleton, and their three children. On Saturday, June 21, Princess Kate, 43, shared a photo on Instagram of Prince William surrounded by their puppies as she led tributes with a sweet message from her and their children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. "Happy birthday! Love C, G, C, L, Orla and the puppies! 🐾" she captioned the snap. It was just last month that the couple's beloved dog, Orla, welcomed a set of puppies, The Sun reported. 'Everyone loves a new royal baby news and so new royal puppies run very close," an insider told the outlet at the time. The family was gifted Orla in 2020 after James Middleton's dog Luna gave birth to six puppies. King Charles also shared a birthday tribute to Prince William on behalf of the royal family on his Instagram Stories. "Happy birthday to the Prince of Wales!" he captioned a photo of William sitting in a field. The messages followed the adorable before-and-after pictures that the Prince and Princess of Wales' children posted for Father's Day on June 15. William was shown with his arms around the children as they stood for a relaxed portrait under what appeared to be a cherry tree. The second photo captured them playfully falling into one another as the kids piled on top of their dad. "Happy Father's Day, Papa (before and after!) We love you! G, C & L 💖," the post was captioned. Josh Shinner, a photographer who has also previously taken photos of the Princess of Wales, took the pictures on what appeared to be the same day as the portraits for Louis' 7th birthday. Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more! The social media posts came at the end of an intensely busy time for the royals, full of public events. Last weekend on June 14, there was the annual birthday parade for the King, Trooping the Colour, and then came Garter Day on June 16, when Princess Kate watched as Prince William paraded down the hill from Windsor Castle for the service at St. George's Chapel before joining him in a carriage when the royals left. Several days of horse racing at Royal Ascot (its fifth and final day is today, June 21) followed. Unfortunately, Kate didn't join the family this year for the races, despite being expected to attend on Wednesday with William. She is still managing her return to public-facing engagements as she continues her recovery from cancer treatment, those close to her say. "She's being sensible, listening to what her body is telling her and easing back into public life," Queen Elizabeth's former spokeswoman Ailsa Anderson tells PEOPLE in this week's exclusive cover story. Prince William also teamed up with actress Cate Blanchett on June 19 to visit one of his Earthshot Prize finalists to highlight the work they are doing to create a more sustainable fashion industry with innovative ways to make color dyes that use much less water and no harmful chemicals. Why Kate Middleton and King Charles' ‘Simmering Tensions' Just Exploded in Public

Kate Middleton's decision to cancel an appearance in the Royal Ascot carriage procession, citing 'slightly vague' reasons of 'balance,' has highlighted simmering tensions with King Charles over their differing priorities, The Daily Beast can reveal. One friend of Prince William and Kate insisted the couple were right to prioritize Kate's health, and said that if she was feeling unwell it was absurd to expect her to be paraded in front of the public on a boiling hot summer day, with little shade or air conditioning. They added: 'Catherine and her children all enthusiastically attended Trooping the Colour on Saturday, and Catherine was also on duty in Windsor on Monday for the Order of the Garter ceremony.' However, another source said that the late queen, who adored horse racing and considered attending the Ascot races one of the few truly fun public engagements she was obliged to carry out, would have been affronted that someone who had accepted the 'great honor of a coveted place in the carriage procession' could fail to show up at the last minute. Another source pointed out that Kate and William are simply not very interested in horse racing, and there is a suspicion in some quarters that had Wednesday's event been something she really loved, such as Wimbledon, she might have turned up. Her office has not given a specific reason for her decision not to go to Ascot. It has not, for example, fallen back on the trusty excuse of a severe cold, instead briefing media that Kate was 'disappointed' not to go but wanted to find the right 'balance' in her return to full-time royal duties. Asked how Charles would have seen Kate's last-minute cancellation, a friend of the king said: 'Charles is a very thoughtful and considerate man. He is going through cancer himself so he will be entirely understanding. He knows all about good days and bad days, physically and mentally.' Asked whether the incident highlighted a difference between how William and Kate and Charles and Camilla approach their jobs, the source said, 'Charles has been very insistent that the show must go on, come hell or high water. Kate and William tackle their public duties differently, which is their privilege, for now. Charles has been very clear that he supports their decisions.' However, another source, a former royal staffer, was more skeptical about the circumstances of Kate's no-show Wednesday, telling the Daily Beast: 'There is a perception in some quarters that Kate just doesn't like racing and so didn't make the effort. That is probably not fair, but you have to wonder if she would have missed Wimbledon, which she adores. 'I am sure she was genuinely unable to come, yet the last-minute nature of the way it was announced makes the king look disrespected. Would she have dared miss Ascot at a moment's notice when the queen was alive? Her late Majesty would have been not best pleased to have the great honor of a coveted place in the carriage procession rejected an hour before kickoff on slightly vague grounds. 'Clearly, Kate wasn't feeling up to it, but there is no denying that the whole affair was badly handled. You can't blame their office as they are the last to know, William and Kate make their own decisions on their own time, which is another source of frustration to everyone else trying to steer the tanker. They pulled the plug at the last minute. 'It's interesting that briefing is now coming out of the palace saying that the racecourse made a bureaucratic error by publishing the carriage list with her in it, but that doesn't change the fact that her team didn't announce she wasn't coming until late in the day.' Kate's no-show clearly caught everyone by surprise, including close friends who had been invited to join them in the royal box, including Thomas van Straubenzee, a godfather to their daughter, Princess Charlotte, Eton friend James Meade, and amateur jockey and businessman Sam Waley-Cohen. William looked markedly somber on arrival but cheered up later in the day when he was photographed having a drink with his pals. Kensington Palace did not respond to a request for comment.
