North East's first dementia-friendly train offers music and stunning scenery

Live music, picnics and massages were on board a 'special' train service, which has started in the North East.
Northern Trains ran a 'Forget-Me-Not' service between Whitby and Middlesbrough this week with more to come.
Passengers were treated to live music, picnics and soothing hand massages on a 'very special trip' on Wednesday (March 19) as Northern Trains launched their first ever dementia-friendly service.
The journey is the first of many designed to give people living with dementia and their carers a safe and calming environment to socialise in and enjoy a relaxing day out while taking in the North East's stunning scenery.
The new dementia-friendly services are the brainchild of Lisa Williams, General Manager of Esk valley Railway Development Company.
She said: 'It is so important to offer an opportunity to those living with dementia and their carers the chance to meet with others going through a similar experience.
'We discovered that both live music and massages are important to them and offering these on board is a very rewarding experience.'

More 'Forget-Me-Not' services are planned throughout the summer months, with the next taking place on May 21, with two more planned for July 16 and September 17.
Jason Wade, Regional Director for Northern Trains, welcomed the new services.
He said: 'There was a fantastic atmosphere on board and our staff are already looking forward to the next service.

'We will also continue to work with carers, support groups and charities to make it easier for people with dementia to travel on services and stations across our network.'
People with a Disabled Railcard can buy tickets for the service at a discount for them and a carer.
To travel on a 'Forget-Me-Not' train this summer, tickets can be purchased at ticket vending machines, station ticket offices or the Northern Trains website.

Race Across The World 2025 cast now: Months on from filming, here's where they are today

After eight, very intense weeks, Race Across the World came to an end last night (11th June) on BBC One, with this year's winners reaching the finish line at Kanniyakumari, India. The five pairs endured homestays, all kinds of odd jobs and sleeper buses over the course of the series, as they competed for the prize fund of £20,000. In the end, mother and son duo, Caroline and Tom, beat this year's runners up (Elizabeth and Letitia) by approximately 19 minutes, with teen couple Fin and Sioned coming in third place. Filming took place for the show last year October, so some time has passed since the participants were roughing it over in Asia for the ultimate race. So, what are the contestants up to now? From this year's winners to sisters Elizabeth and Letitia, and early departures Yin and Gaz, here's what the Race Across the World contestants are up to today. Caroline and Tom have been doing a lot of press since the 2025 season aired. Tom recently shared a gallery of images from some of their cast interviews. "Had a great time doing the One show and BBC radio 2 with @realscottmills !! The final is tonight! Who is going to take home the prize?? All to play for and only a couple of hours until we find out! @raceacrosstheworld @bbctheoneshow @bbcradio2" he wrote alongside the images. Asides from the BBC One show, Caroline and Tom have planned to do more travelling together, with the pair revealing that the show has brought them "closer". "We now try and have a bit more time for each other," Caroine said after their win. "We actually make time to stop and enjoy the simple things together and we are hoping to go travelling again." She continued: "Tom is back working and we are hoping to save up and plan to go to Kazakhstan with rucksacks but obviously with a phone this time and see what takes our fancy. "It will just be the two of us because we like to walk and be impulsive and we don't mind roughing it." Since appearing on the BBC One show, Fin and Sioned have been doing some more travelling. In February, the couple headed to Australia, with Fin sharing a photo dump on Instagram of his time there with the caption: "Down Under". Sioned also shared a photo dump from their time in Australia, one of which included them jumping out of a plane. The pair have kept in contact with their co-stars, with Tom commenting: "Big boy" with a kangaroo emoji on Fin's Australia dump. In another photo, the couple can be seen attending BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend with Tom, Letitia, and Elizabeth. "A post that's actually not about the Race big suprise. Absolutely brilliant few days at BBC big weekend, and finally seeing (nearly) everyone again," Fin captioned the photos posted in May 2025. Sisters Elizabeth and Letitia just missed out on the cash prize, but are clearly winning in life. In March, Elizabeth joined Serene Wellness Retreats as a meditation facilitator. "Meet the Workshop Leaders! 🌿✨ Feeling so lucky to welcome Elizabeth to our workshop leaders team! For nearly eight years, she has immersed herself in meditation, breathwork, and energy healing, discovering the profound power of stillness. Her warmth and guidance make every practice feel like a breath of fresh air- something we could all use more of!" read the caption alongside an image of Elizabeth. Letitia hasn't shared much on her socials since appearing on the show, but has been by her sister's side during press interviews and days out with the rest of the racers. The brothers had us all screaming when they were picking up manure with their bare hands. You'll be happy to hear they haven't been doing any of that since the show ended (well, at least from what we can see from their social media). Instead, they've been doing some press, and were interviewed by The One Show's Scott Mills recently. They've also been spending some time with family, with Brian sharing a photo with his son and grandson from his and Melvyn's joint Instagram page. "Making memories tonight watching @raceacrosstheworld with my family! Three generations of Mole men ☺️. My grandson Alfie particularly loved my 🐃 💩 moment! 😁" he captioned the sweet image. Separated couple Yin and Gaz were the first pair to be out of the race. Since filming ended for them on show, the ex couple have been getting on with their day-to-day lives, with a few interviews here and there - as you do. They've been spending time together as a family going on hikes and to markets over the bank holidays, along with their daughter, Autumn, who recently turned 21. Gaz has also been enjoying himself at a few football matches and concerts, including a Sam Fender show at West Ham's stadium earlier this month. Race Across the World is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Businesses 'benefiting' from Radio 1's Big Weekend

Thousands of music fans have descended on Liverpool for Radio 1's Big Weekend. The festival, taking place in Sefton Park, has brought visitors from across the country and businesses in the area say they are benefiting from the increase in footfall. Sophie Peers and Eve Mansfield opened Gran Caffé on Lark Lane last year and said it had been the "best business move" due to the traffic from the events at the park. The pair said they had installed a new coffee machine ahead of this weekend's event. "It's so busy, when they walk past and they see the cakes it draws them in," they said. "These big events are so important for us, everyone's come from around the country. I've had people say they had to get hotels in Manchester because it's so busy in Liverpool. "It's so important for us to have this amount of footfall." Kiera Bowe from Doogles Donuts said festival-goers had been popping into her shop for a sweet treat on the way to or from the event. "You can always tell when something is happening as it gets so much busier," she said. She said there was "more of a buzz" when there was an event on at the park, which created a good atmosphere on Lark Lane. "It's a really lovely place, it's a nice community environment to be involved in. It's dead positive." Traders at Lark Lane farmers' market say they are are also benefiting from the festival traffic. Peter Gill creates customised pop culture dolls and sells them online and locally. He said he worked at the market every month and there was a "really good buzz" when events were on. "It's been really good, it's been really busy. Everyone loves it and they're all up for the music," he said. "I was watching a bit on the telly last night, Tom Grennan was amazing I'm working today but I'll have a look round the park afterwards."
