
How powerful is a magnitude-6 earthquake as dozens injured in Greece and Turkey?
Dozens have been injured after two earthquakes hit Greece and Turkey this morning, June 3.
Two serious earthquakes struck Europe this morning, June 3, resulting in a teenage girl's death in Turkey, and dozens of injuries. A 5.8-magnitude tremor struck in Marmaris, and a more severe 6.2-magnitude quake occurred in Rhodes at around 2am this morning.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) received over 282 reports about the Marmaris quake, which had a depth of 74km. Guests at hotels in Rhodes reported 'violent swaying and shaking' as the tremor hit Greece, with the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) confirming its 6.2 magnitude.
The governor of Turkey's Marmaris municipality, Idris Akbiyik, confirmed that 69 people had been injured from jumping from buildings in panic, and a 14-year-old girl tragically died after being taken to hospital. The two earthquakes are thought to be related.
It comes after a series of quakes hit areas surrounding Greece recently, with a 6.1-magnitude tremor striking off the coast of Crete on May 22. A tsunami warning was also issued following this previous earthquake.
But as the incidents make headlines, questions are rising on how serious a 5.8-magnitude or a 6.2-magnitude is on the scale. So, how are earthquakes measured and how severe is a tremor with a magnitude of 6?
How are earthquakes measured?
BBC Bitesize explains that until recently, earthquakes were measured via a system called the Richter scale, which measures an earthquake's magnitude, meaning how powerful the tremor is.
Magnitude is measured using a machine called a seismometer which produces a seismograph, and the Richter scale indicates how powerful the quake is on a scale of 1-10.
The scale is logarithmic, meaning that an earthquake measuring magnitude 5 is ten times more powerful than an earthquake measuring 4.
Earthquakes measuring 1-2 on the scale happen regularly, and they are so small that people cannot usually feel them. Tremors measuring upwards of 7 are less frequent but very powerful, and can cause serious destruction.
Today, the magnitude of a quake is more commonly measured through the Moment Magnitude Scale - a method that uses the same logarithmic scale as Richter, but which more accurately measures the strength of larger earthquakes.
How serious is a magnitude-6 earthquake?
According to Michigan Tech, earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.1 to 6.9 "may cause a lot of damage in very populated areas". They also estimate that the planet sees around 100 earthquakes in this category per year.
To put the recent earthquakes in Greece and Turkey into context, the largest quake ever recorded was in Chile in 1960, which measured 9.5 on the Richter scale, and killed well over 1,000 people.
In 2023, a series of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria killed over 55,000 people. The highest magnitude recorded in these tremors was 7.8, and it was the strongest earthquake the region had seen for over 20 years.

A zoo in Fife has welcomed a new 'rare and elusive' animal native to Madagascar. Fife Zoo announced the arrival of a new male fossa, named Isalo, on Monday. Weekly nightmares ‘triple the risk of an early death' as scientists reveal what to do NOW

Adults who reported weekly nightmares were over three times more likely to die before the age of 70, compared to those who rarely or never had them, they found. They also linked frequent nightmares to accelerated biological ageing. Off the back of their findings, researchers shared "simple measures" to prevent nightmares - including "avoiding scary movies", setting up a good bedtime routine and keeping stress under control. The team - led by Dr Abidemi Otaiku of the UK Dementia Research Institute, and Imperial College London - analysed data from 2,429 children aged eight to 10 and 183,012 adults aged 26 to 86 over a period of 19 years. Adults were asked to report how often they experienced nightmares at the start of the study, while the parents of child participants reported how often their little ones suffered night terrors. Meanwhile, participants' biological age was assessed by measuring the length of their telomeres – small DNA sequences that serve as indicators of cellular ageing. The research, which was presented at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Congress this month, found that nightmares disrupt both sleep quality and duration. This impairs the body's ability to repair itself and restore cells throughout the night. Dr Otaiku said: 'Our sleeping brains cannot distinguish dreams from reality. 'That's why nightmares often wake us up sweating, gasping for breath, and with our hearts pounding – because our fight-or-flight response has been triggered. The popular sleep position doctor warns should be avoided and could be the cause of your back and neck pain "This stress reaction can be even more intense than anything we experience while awake.' The combination of chronic stress and disrupted sleep likely speed up the ageing of our cells and bodies, study authors said. Results showed that adults who reported weekly nightmares were more than three times as likely to die prematurely - which researchers described as before the of age 70 - compared to those who rarely or never experienced nightmares. Children and adults with more frequent nightmares also exhibited faster biological ageing, which accounted for approximately 40 per cent of their heightened risk of death. Dr Otaiku added: 'Nightmares lead to prolonged elevations of cortisol, a stress hormone closely linked to faster cellular ageing. For those who frequently experience nightmares, this cumulative stress may significantly impact the ageing process. "Additionally, nightmares disrupt both sleep quality and duration, impairing the body's essential overnight cellular restoration and repair. "The combined effects of chronic stress and disrupted sleep likely contribute to the accelerated ageing of our cells and bodies.' Even monthly nightmares were linked to faster ageing and increased mortality compared to rare or no nightmares, study authors found. Tips to combat stress The Stress Management Society says . . . Even if you work from home, try to keep work and personal space separate, create boundaries and prioritise the most important tasks for the start of the day. EAT HEALTHILY. Reduce sugar consumption to avoid energy crashes, avoid relying on stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. SELF-CARE. Make time for things you enjoy and leave you feeling relaxed, whether it's mindfulness, reading, a walk, sport or watching TV. See The link between frequent nightmares and accelerated ageing was observed across all ages, sexes, ethnicities, and mental health conditions, which researchers said indicates a universal effect. The findings highlight the importance of reducing nightmare frequency across the population. 'The good news is that nightmares can be prevented and treated', Dr Otaiku said. 'Simple measures like avoiding scary movies, maintaining good sleep hygiene, managing stress, and seeking treatment for anxiety or depression can be effective. 'Those experiencing frequent nightmares that disrupt their quality of life may benefit from seeing a sleep specialist. "Effective psychological treatments, such as image rehearsal therapy, can be practised at home. "Recent research also suggests that therapies like CBT-I, which reduce nightmares, may significantly slow the ageing process', he added. Reflecting on the broader public health significance of these findings, Dr Otaiku stated: 'Given how common and modifiable nightmares are, they should be taken far more seriously as a public health concern. 'If further studies confirm the causal impact of nightmares on ageing and brain health, then preventing and treating them could become one of the simplest, most cost-effective strategies to slow ageing at a population level. "This would not only improve individual well-being but also help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of reducing premature death worldwide and promoting health for all.'

'This could have been a horrific incident': Ken Skates on the Conwy Tunnel fire
Ken Skates paid a visit to the Conwy Tunnel today (Sunday) to see the work that had been done to get it reopened, after it was shut following a crane lorry fire on Thursday. The tunnel fully reopened today, after a contraflow was put in place, following Thursday's blaze, which saw people instructed to leave their vehicles and walk out, as acrid black smoke billowed out. Mr Skates, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport said "This could have been a horrific incident," but said the safety systems in place had done their job. "The effort by the team has been quite phenomenal to get it open again in such a short space of time," he said. "We were under promising and the team have now over-delivered, so I'm really grateful to them. Commenting on the safety of the tunnel Mr Skates said: "There are going to be some armchair analsysts who will say that things should be done slightly differently, or different measures should be implemented and incorporated into the tunnel. "But a lot of the learning and measures date back to the aftermath of the Mont Blanc Tunnel disaster., when there was huge loss of life, after a terrible fire. "Regulations were introduced through European directives and then they were adopted by the UK when we left. As a result of that, regular rehearsals of events and incidents such as this have to take place - standards that have to be meet. Just two months ago, an exercise was undertaken, by multiple agencies and it was precisely to address the sort of incident that took place on Thursday. "It's that sort of planning that is so vitally important to ensuring that there is no loss of life and no injuries. This could have been a horrific incident, but instead, because of the planning and the preparations and the ventilation systems in place in the tunnel - nobody was injured, nobody was killed. and the public were able to be evacuated without too much anxiety or stress." Mr Skates said there are some tunnels that have sprinklers, but they are not necessarlily required. "They may cool the tunnel," Mr Skates said: "But they don't deal with the fundamental cause of the blaze. That requires emergency services to get in there and deal with it. "Tunnels have to have the mechanical ventilation system that deals with the air flow and that enables the safe evacuation of people from the tunnel. This is a standard system which is in place in tunnels across Europe, which is proven to work and last week it was proven to work and sprinkler systems are not needed." Mr Skates said there are further repairs scheduled for the tunnel on Tuesday night.
