KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia ended lower on Monday, mirroring the lacklustre performance across Asia as weak Chinese economic data and the recent downgrade of the United States' sovereign credit rating weighed on regional market sentiment.
At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) fell 15.61 points, or 0.99 per cent, to 1,556.14 from Friday's close of 1,571.75.

The benchmark index opened 5.18 points lower at 1,566.57 and fluctuated between 1,550.93 and 1,566.57 throughout the trading session.
In the broader market, losers thumped gainers 889 to 216, while 384 counters were unchanged, 906 untraded and 17 suspended.
Turnover increased to 3.71 billion units worth RM2.27 billion versus last Friday's 2.91 billion units worth RM2.16 billion.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng believed the selldown offers an opportunity to bargain hunt stocks at lower levels.
'We reckon it is time to accumulate blue chips with strong dividend yields, such as banks and utilities, for a better defensive approach. As such, we anticipate the benchmark index will trend within the range of 1,550-1,580 for the week,' he told Bernama.
Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said despite the selling pressure, trading activity remained robust.

IPPTAR Plays Role In Shaping Gen Z As Ethical Communicators

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) – The Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR) plays a key role in shaping the new generation—referred to as Gen Z—to become ethical communicators, said its Director, Roslan Ariffin. He said that in pursuit of this goal, emphasis and guidance on communication ethics must be nurtured from an early stage in tandem with the advancement of digital technology, so that the voices of the new generation become a positive force in communication. 'Today's generation is incredibly fast—everything is fast, speech is fast, WhatsApp is fast—and their voices and ways of connecting transcend boundaries… so we need to give them proper guidance and emphasis, with the hope that they communicate ethically. 'This also aligns with the theme of IPPTAR's Open Day celebration tomorrow, which is 'Suara Generasi, Kuasa Komunikasi (Voice of the Generation, Power of Communication),' he said when appearing as a guest on BERNAMA TV's Ruang Bicara programme tonight. Commenting further, Roslan said that IPPTAR Open Day, now in its second year, serves as a platform to attract young people to come and learn more about the institute. 'The content we have prepared is largely aimed at drawing in this group, most of whom today aspire to be influencers—but to become influencers, they must first be good communicators. 'By getting to know IPPTAR, they may one day come to regard it with affection and pride as an institution that educates and trains them in the world of communication,' he said. He added that in facing the latest technologies, including the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI), IPPTAR continues to progress and evolve to become a leading training institution in the field of communication to meet current needs. In conjunction with IPPTAR Open Day 2025 tomorrow, the public will have the opportunity to explore and understand AI technology and its significance to the media and broadcasting industry, in addition to participating in various engaging activities.

Anwar: 13MP success hinges on unity and coordination across ministries

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that the success of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) hinges on proper coordination and preparedness across all government ministries and agencies. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said every administrative machinery must act in unison as one national team to implement policies grounded in reality and designed to meet future challenges. "The 13MP was drafted following continuous discussions among ministries, central agencies and state governments over the past few months," said Anwar, who chaired the Special Cabinet Meeting today to review the framework and key initiatives of the plan. He said the 13MP — a key document that will shape the country's development over the next five years — is scheduled to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat at the end of next month. During the meeting, Anwar also gave ministers and senior officials the opportunity to contribute ideas and suggestions to sharpen the plan's implementation. "The 13MP is a continuation of the reforms driven by the MADANI Government over the past two years, based on the aspirations of the MADANI Economy — to restructure the economic framework, elevate the status, dignity and well-being of the people, and build a more just, sustainable and resilient nation," he said. — BERNAMA
