Unifor members at the Best Western Plus begin strike action

WINDSOR, ON, June 1, 2025 /CNW/ - Unifor Local 195 members working at the Best Western Plus in Windsor are on the picket line today in a push for fair wages and to fight back against concessionary demands from their employer.
'Unifor members at Best Western Plus deserve wages that reflect the value they bring to the hospitality sector and respect for the hard work they do every day,' said Unifor National President Lana Payne. 'Instead of seeking to improve working conditions, the employer has demanded concessions. Our members won't stand for it.'
Local 195 members walked off the job at 12:01 a.m. June 1. Unifor has called on the employer to return to the table with a serious offer that addresses wages and withdraws concessions.
'Hotel workers should not be asked to accept less while the hospitality industry continues to recover and grow,' said Unifor Ontario Regional Director Samia Hashi. 'This strike is about protecting decent work and dignity for every worker who makes this hotel run.'
Unifor Local 195 represents nearly 40 workers in guest services, housekeeping, and maintenance at the hotel.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.

TFSA: 3 Canadian Stocks to Buy and Hold for a Lifetime

Written by Amy Legate-Wolfe at The Motley Fool Canada Building wealth doesn't have to be complicated. With a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), Canadians can grow their money over time without worrying about taxes on gains or income. But the key is picking the right stocks, ones you can hold for decades. The best TFSA stocks aren't necessarily the most exciting. They're the ones that quietly deliver strong returns, pay dividends, and stay resilient in all kinds of markets. Three great examples today are CCL Industries (TSX:CCL.B), Manulife (TSX:MFC), and WSP Global (TSX:WSP). CCL is one of the world's largest producers of labels and packaging. While that might not sound thrilling, it's a business built for stability. CCL has over 200 production facilities around the world, serving clients in healthcare, food, consumer goods, and tech. In its most recent earnings report, CCL reported revenue of $1.9 billion, up 8.6% from the year before. Earnings per share (EPS) hit $1.18, and free cash flow swung back to positive after a brief dip last year. This shows CCL isn't just growing, it's generating real cash that can support future expansion and dividends. The dividend stock currently pays a dividend yield of 1.6%, and it has a history of raising that payout over time. Then there's Manulife, one of Canada's largest insurance and wealth management companies. It operates in Canada, the U.S., and across Asia, giving it a strong global footprint. In its most recent quarter, Manulife reported $1.8 billion in core earnings, a steady result despite some market headwinds. Core earnings per share rose to $0.99 from $0.91 the year before. Net income dropped, mainly due to changes in investment values, but the core business remained strong. Its Canadian division saw solid insurance growth and lower expenses, while Asia showed promise as demand for wealth products improved. Manulife's dividend yield sits around 4.2%, and it has a long track record of rewarding shareholders. Finally, WSP Global is a lesser-known gem that delivers engineering and infrastructure consulting services around the world. Whether it's public transit systems, bridges, or green buildings, WSP is helping design the world's future. In its latest quarter, WSP saw revenue climb 22.4% to $4.4 billion, with net earnings of $144 million or $1.10 per share. That's up from $126 million last year. The dividend stock also reported a backlog of $16.6 billion, meaning it has years of projects already lined up. WSP's dividend is modest at just 0.55%, but it has room to grow thanks to strong earnings and demand. What makes all three of these stocks ideal for a TFSA is their mix of income, growth, and staying power. None of them are highly speculative. Each one operates in industries that are essential, whether it's consumer packaging, financial services, or infrastructure development. Each also generates healthy free cash flow, which supports dividend payouts and long-term investments in the business. Investors could invest $5,000 across all three today and collect quarterly dividends, with the potential for steady capital growth. And because these dividend stocks are diversified in what they do and where they operate, you get some built-in protection from market swings. In fact, $5,000 across each would bring in annual dividends of $316.60! COMPANY RECENT PRICE NUMBER OF SHARES DIVIDEND TOTAL PAYOUT FREQUENCY INVESTMENT TOTAL CCL.B $78.11 64 $1.28 $81.92 Quarterly $4,999.04 MFC $42.18 118 $1.76 $207.68 Quarterly $4,977.24 WSP $272.26 18 $1.50 $27 Quarterly $4,900.68 A TFSA is one of the best tools Canadians have to build long-term wealth. The sooner you start filling it with solid, income-generating stocks like CCL, Manulife, and WSP, the more time you will give your investments to grow tax-free. You don't need to check the market every day. Just buy quality businesses, sit back, and let compounding do the rest. 5 Ways to Invest $5,000 for Long-Term Financial Security

Written by Puja Tayal at The Motley Fool Canada Financial security is about having enough money to withstand expected financial situations. There are multiple elements in financial security. You can buy life, car, home, and medical insurance for contingencies. You can build an emergency fund for unexpected events. But what about securing your finances from inflation? A financial security portfolio should cater to five things, and these instruments will help you with that. You can start investing $1,000 each in two income-generating stocks that grow their dividends annually by 3% and offer a dividend-reinvestment plan (DRIP). CT REIT (TSX: gives you dividends from rental income paid by Canadian Tire for its retail stores. The real estate investment trust (REIT) has the advantage of first choice to develop and buy stores for the retailer. It has been growing its dividend annually every July for the last 12 years and can continue to do so. A $1,000 investment today can buy 63 units of CT REIT, which will pay dividends of $59.7 in a year. This amount may look small, but if you opt for DRIP, the dividend amount will be used to buy more income-paying units and compound your income in the long term. Year CT REIT Stock Price Stocks Purchased Total Share Count Annual Dividend Per Share Annual Dividend Income Total Investment 2025 $14.51 134 1185 $0.8982 $1,064.78 2024 $14.77 124 1051 $0.8982 $944.42 $1,944.42 2023 $16 106 927 $0.8982 $832.95 $1,832.95 2022 $16.94 94 821 $0.854 $700.82 $1,700.82 2021 $15.69 96 727 $0.821 $596.85 $1,596.85 2020 $16 88 631 $0.793 $500.31 $1,500.31 2019 $12.94 111 543 $0.757 $411.14 $1,411.14 2018 $14.36 86 432 $1.000 $432.28 $1,432.28 2017 $14.92 79 346 $0.700 $242.04 $1,242.04 2016 $12.71 88 267 $0.680 $181.31 $1,181.31 2015 $11.9 89 179 $0.663 $118.42 $1,118.42 2014 $11.15 90 90 $0.650 $58.30 $1,058.30 If you invested $1,000 on January 1 for the last 12 years, your $1,000 investment plus the dividend earned will help you accumulate around 1,185 units by 2025. These units would pay over $1,000 a year. TC Energy (TSX:TRP) is another income-paying stock that gives quarterly dividends from the toll money it collects for transmitting natural gas through its pipelines. It has a history of paying and growing dividends for the last 25 years. Last year, the company split its gas and oil pipeline business. As per the management's long-term target, it plans to grow its dividend by 3-5% annually. The dividend will keep growing as Canada exports most of its natural gas to the United States and is looking to export to other countries. The benefit of DRIP is that you can compound your income when your finances are strong and pause it to take monthly and quarterly payouts at times of need. Once things are fine, you can resume DRIP. goeasy (TSX:GSY) can grow your money and income. The company is involved in non-prime lending and earns regular cash flow from charging higher interest on loans. It passes on some of this cash flow to shareholders through dividends. The company is growing by offering different types of loans — auto and point-of-sale loans — through online and offline modes. As the loan portfolio increases, its share price increases. However, if the credit risk also increases, the share price remains flat, as in the current economic environment. Now is a good time to buy goeasy stock and lock in a 3.74% yield, and a recovery rally when the economy revives. Note that goeasy does not offer DRIP but grows its dividend by strong double digits. The above stocks can fall in an economic crisis. At such times, you need defensive stocks. Consider investing $500 each in a gold and technology ETF. Gold prices rise when the value of paper currency falls, thereby balancing any dips in other stocks with a sharp rally. In contrast, technology stocks tend to generate high growth during cyclical trends. The iShares Gold Bullion ETF and the iShares S&P/TSX Capped Information Tech Idx ETF can help hedge your portfolio against economic crisis and boost growth in cyclical trends.
