60K new police recruits to get appointment letters on Sunday
The Uttar Pradesh government is gearing up for a mega ceremony to distribute appointment letters to more than 60,000 new police recruits. Union home minister Amit Shah will be present at the programme to be held here this Sunday, officials said.
The stage and massive pandals, being set up at the Defence Expo Ground in Vrindavan Yojana, are spread over an area of over 100 acres.
Addressing a gathering on Sunday, chief minister Yogi Adityanath had confirmed that Shah would distribute the appointment letters in an event in Lucknow on June 15.
The recruitments were part of the UP Police Constables' Direct Recruitment Examination-2023, which could be completed after hiccups of a question paper leak in February last year. It was one of the biggest recruitment drives taken up by the state government, with over 48 lakh aspirants, which included 15 lakh women, evincing interest in joining the department.
The leak had given the opposition ammunition to target the Union and the state governments during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. BJP-led NDA's share in the state came down to 33 from 62 in 2019.
While the political nuances of Shah's visit cannot be overlooked as panchayat polls are due in the state early next year, the event is also significant as it shows the government's commitment to creating job opportunities for youngsters.
A senior police official engaged in the arrangements confirmed that the efforts to make the event a mega affair were in full swing. 'Pandals being set up for the event are completely waterproof. Separate transformers are being installed at the site for an uninterrupted power supply. Sitting arrangements are being made for at least 70,000 people,' he said, adding the CM met the Union minister in Delhi on Monday to formally invite him to the event.
He said director general of police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna had written to all district police chiefs and police commissioners to expedite the steps required from the home districts of police recruits to facilitate the process. The letter stated that the allocation of cadres to 48,196 male and 12,048 female candidates should be completed soon.
In the letter, the DGP said while the male candidates were required to wear full-sleeve white shirts, khaki pants and black shoes to the programme, women candidates must wear plain salwar suits or sarees. He said the home districts should make arrangements for the candidates to travel to Lucknow and come back, and that the Lucknow police commissioner should make arrangements for their stay.
The recruitment process was completed under Rajeev Krishna as the director of the UP Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) after the removal of previous director Renuka Mishra following the question paper leak. The state government cancelled the written examination on February 24 and directed that it be reconducted within six months. The written examination was then successfully conducted in August 2024 under heightened security.

Karnataka CM inaugurates development works worth 936 crore in Raichur
Raichur (Karnataka) [India], June 23 (ANI): Development works worth Rs 936 crore were inaugurated in Raichur, Karnataka, on Monday, reaffirming the Congress Government's commitment to delivering on its promises, said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as per an official statement from the Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO). He was speaking after inaugurating the Tribal Cultural Festival organised by the Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department and the District Administration, unveiling the nameplate of Adikavi Maharshi Valmiki University, and participating in the 371st Dashamanotsav celebrations. 'Our government is committed to development. We had promised 560 guarantees during this election. Already, 235 of these have been fulfilled, and the remaining will be completed in the next three years,' the Chief Minister said. He criticised the previous BJP government, accusing it of neglecting development and now resorting to false propaganda out of frustration over Congress' achievements. 'From 2013 to 2018, our previous government fulfilled all the promises made and even 30 more that were not part of the manifesto,' he recalled. Highlighting the 'steep price rise' under the Modi-led government, the CM pointed out how the prices of gold, silver, rice, pulses, cooking oil, LPG, petrol, diesel, and fertilisers have risen sharply, burdening ordinary citizens. 'Despite being in power at the Centre, the BJP is lying shamelessly to the people,' he charged. Emphasising the historical importance of Article 371J for Kalyana Karnataka's progress, CM Siddaramaiah reminded that it was the result of the relentless efforts of Congress leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and Dharam Singh, supported by the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. 'The BJP opposed this historic step. When Vajpayee was Prime Minister, Advani said that 371J was not possible,' he said. Since coming to power, the Congress government has allocated Rs 13,500 crore for Kalyana Karnataka's development, with a commitment to allocate more funds going forward. 'Due to 371J, our youth are now becoming engineers, doctors, IAS, IPS, ACs, and DCs. This is our achievement,' he said. Thanking the people of Kalyana Karnataka for electing Congress in all five Lok Sabha seats from the region, he said, 'The blessings of the people of Raichur district are always upon us. Kalyana Karnataka will remain a stronghold of Congress.' Lashing out at the BJP for 'betraying' Karnataka, he said, 'Even though they are in power at the Centre, BJP leaders have failed to correct the injustice done to Karnataka. Amit Shah arrives in Varanasi to chair 25th meeting of Central Zonal Council tomorrow
Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 23 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Varanasi on Monday evening, a day before he is scheduled to chair the 25th meeting of the Central Zonal Council on June 24. The meeting, organised by the Inter-State Council Secretariat under the Ministry of Home Affairs in collaboration with the Government of Uttar Pradesh, will bring together key policymakers from the central and state governments. The meeting will be attended by the Chief Ministers of the member states (Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh) and two senior ministers from each state. Upon arriving at the airport, Amit Shah was welcomed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and party leaders. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath welcomed Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The Central Zonal Council comprises the states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. The meeting is being organised by the Inter-State Council Secretariat under the Ministry of Home Affairs in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh government. Under Sections 15 to 22 of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, five Zonal Councils were established. The Union Home Minister is the chairperson of these five Zonal Councils, and the Chief Ministers, Lieutenant Governors and Administrators of the member states and Union Territories are their members. Among these members, the Chief Minister of one member state (rotating every year) acts as the vice-chairperson. From each member state, the governor nominates two ministers as council members. Each Zonal Council has also formed a permanent committee at the level of the Chief Secretaries. Issues proposed by the states are initially presented to the permanent committee of the concerned Zonal Council for discussion. After consideration by the permanent committee, the remaining issues are then presented to the Zonal Council meeting for further deliberation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised the need to leverage cooperative and competitive federalism for the country's all-around development. With the belief that strong states make a strong nation, the Zonal Councils provide a structured mechanism for dialogue and discussion on issues affecting two or more states or the Centre and states, and through this, serve as an important platform to enhance cooperation. The role of the Zonal Councils is advisory; however, over the past few years, these councils have proven to be an important factor in promoting healthy bonds of mutual understanding and cooperation in various fields. With the cooperation of all state governments, central ministries, and departments, a total of 61 meetings of the various Zonal Councils and their permanent committees have been held in the last eleven years. The Zonal Councils also discuss broad issues of national importance, including the speedy investigation of cases of sexual offenses against women and children and the implementation of Fast Track Special Courts (FTSC) for their swift disposal; providing brick-and-mortar banking facilities within the designated area of every village; implementation of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112); and various regional-level common interest issues such as strengthening nutrition, education, health, electricity, urban planning, and the cooperative system.
