India vs England, 1st Test Live Score : Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant will be hoping to continue scoring freely against the English pacers and try and steer their team towards a massive first innings score, which should give them the best possible chance of moving into the lead in the five-Test series. For the Ben Stokes-led Englishmen, getting an early wicket or two will be the priority and they will be hopeful of restricting the visitors under 500.
Will India continue to bat the way they did on the opening day, and post a mammoth score on the board? Or will Ben Stokes and the rest of the Englishmen fight back with the ball? Stay tuned to find out.
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are batting on 127 and 65 respectively, with the fourth-wicket stand between them currently worth 138. As for the bowling department, captain Ben Stokes has been the standout performer with 2/43 while Brydon Carse (1/70) got the first breakthrough for the hosts by getting rid of KL Rahul.
Day 2, however, isn't likely to be as sunny. There is a thunderstorm warning for Leeds on Saturday, meaning that while the day is likely to be interrupted, it is also expected to be overcast. According to Accuweather, however, the sun won't be completely hidden, and it might get quite warm in phases.
The opening day of the Headingley Test witnessed plenty of sunshine, which eased the wicket out a lot more quickly and helped create ideal batting conditions that Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and the rest of the Indian top-order capitalised on.
Gill celebrated his appointment as India Test captain with a fine century on the opening day of the Headingley Test. And in the process, he became only the fifth Indian to score a century on debut as Test captain after Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Virat Kohli – his predecessor at No 4.
Jaiswal had scored a staggering 712 runs in the five-Test series against England at home last year at an average of 89, collecting a couple of double centuries along the way. And to highlight just how much he loves batting against this time, he scored 101 in his maiden outing on English soil on Friday.
India vs England, 1st Test LIVE Score: India captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant will be hoping to continue from where they left off on Day 1 and steer their team towards a mammoth first innings total on Day 2 of the first Test against England in Headingley. Gill and Pant were batting on 127 and 65 respectively, with the Indian team ending the opening day of the first Test in a dominant position, with the scorecard reading 359/3 after 85 overs.
Gill and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal had headlined India's dominant batting performance on the opening day at Headingley with centuries, with the latter producing a sparkling 101. Gill joined a select group of Indians who scoring a century in their maiden Test as captain, a list that includes Virat Kohli, while Jaiswal continued to shine against England, a team he had scored a staggering 712 runs against during the five-match home series last year.
Jaiswal had earlier got India off to an ideal start with a 91-run opening stand with KL Rahul, who chipped in with a patient 42. The pair appeared set to bat through the morning session when Brydon Carse got the breakthrough by having Rahul caught by Joe Root at first slip with an out-swinger.
B Sai Sudharsan, making his Test debut, came in at No 3 with Gill having moved to the No 4 spot. The Tamil Nadu batter, however, failed to open his account in his maiden appearance for India in whites, getting caught-behind off England captain Ben Stokes' bowling at the stroke of lunch.
Stokes, who had opted to field on what was a great day to bat, later got rid of Jaiswal, rattling his off stump with a beauty shortly after tea. Gill and Pant, however, held fort until the end of the evening session with an unbroken partnership worth 138 to ensure the visitors ended the day on a high.

Hockey: Deepika scores again but India's relegation woes deepen after 5-1 thrashing by Belgium

It is getting tougher for the Indian women's hockey team in their quest to avoid relegation from the FIH Pro League as they were blown away by a second-half set-piece masterclass by Belgium on Saturday in Antwerp. In a battle of the last two teams who finished fourth at the Olympic Games, the current gulf in class became evident as the match went on as India, despite holding a 1-0 lead at half time, had no answers to the relentless pressure from Belgium after the restart, conceding a plethora of penalty corners. The hosts won a total of 16 penalty corners and 1 penalty stroke, and all of their second half goals came from those set-piece situations. But it was Deepika (6') who had given India the lead with a drag flick of her own, continuing her fine form off penalty corners, in what is perhaps the biggest positive to emerge from the European leg of the Pro League for India so far. Belgium had the better chances in the first half anyway but were guilty of not converting. That would all change as Hélène Brasseur (37', 55'), Lucie Breyne (41'), Ambre Ballenghien (54'), and Charlotte Englebert (58') sealed victory for the hosts. The result has seen India drop to the 8th spot on the table with 10 points from their 13 matches, above only England who also lost on the day against Spain to give coach Harendra Singh's team some breathing room. But with Germany thrashing Australia 4-0 and moving up the table, it is heading toward a clear two-way battle between India and England to avoid the wooden spoon. India endured a nervy start as Belgium came out pressing with intent, earning a penalty corner within the opening minute. The early scare was averted, and Savita Punia soon followed up with a sharp save to keep the scoreboard untouched. An unforced error in India's half, as Vaishnavi Phalke completely mis-hit an aerial clearance, gifted Belgium possession again. But she made up for the error to tackle the forward in time and prevent a soft goal. Sitting deep and absorbing waves of pressure, India waited patiently for their chance on the break. When it came, they made it count. Their first circle entry resulted in a penalty corner, and Deepika's shot took a deflection off a Belgian defender before finding the back of the net to put India ahead. But it all unravelled in the second half, especially in the third quarter, when India conceded 8 penalty corners. Belgium entered the third quarter having made 10 circle entries to India's four, maintaining steady pressure on the defence. It took five penalty corners before Brasseur finally converted to bring Belgium level. Two more penalty corners followed, and despite a series of sharp saves from Savita, Breyne struck from close range during yet another set-piece to give Belgium a 2–1 lead. India laboured to find a way back, probing through the flanks in search of an opening in the final quarter, but the Belgian defence remained largely untroubled in the final third. The final ten minutes, however, were completely dominated by the hosts. In the 54th minute, Ballenghien effectively sealed the contest with a well-taken goal to make it 3–1. Five minutes later, Brasseur converted Belgium's fourth penalty corner, stretching the lead further. Just before the end, Englebert added her name to the scoresheet, calmly slotting home a penalty stroke in the 58th minute to complete a comprehensive win for Belgium.

Gill, Pant Played Mind Games By Speaking Loudly In Hindi During Bashir's Spell: Sachin Tendulkar

Last Updated: Shubman Gill (147) and Rishabh Pant (134) added 209 runs for the fourth wicket for Team India in the first innings of the ongoing first Test against England in Leeds. India's Test captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant scored centuries in the first innings of the ongoing first Test between India and England in Leeds. Gill scored 147 runs from 227 balls during his first Test innings as the No. 4 batter, and Pant, with the help of 12 fours and 6 sixes, scored 134 runs from 178 balls. The duo added 209 runs for the fourth wicket, and during their stand, they played mind games with England spinner Shoaib Bashir by speaking loudly in Hindi. Legendary Indian batter and former captain Sachin Tendulkar took to X on Saturday (June 21) to share a tweet in which he mentioned the smart tactic used by the duo. 'Rishabh's falling paddle sweep is not accidental. It is intentional and extremely clever. Going down with the shot allows him to get under the ball and scoop it over leg slip with control. Also noticed something interesting during Bashir's spell. Shubman and Rishabh were speaking loudly in Hindi between deliveries. It wasn't just casual talk. They were playing mind games with the bowler, trying to disrupt his rhythm. These minor details may not appear on the scoreboard, but they can have a significant impact on the game," Tendulkar tweeted. Pant creates history Pant entered his name in the history books on Saturday by becoming the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score seven centuries in Test cricket. He went past MS Dhoni's tally of six centuries. Dhoni played 90 Tests for India from 2005 to 2014 and crossed the 100-run mark six times, whereas Pant has seven centuries to his name now in 44 Tests. Of his seven Test centuries, Pant has scored three in England, which is a record for most Test centuries by a non-English wicketkeeper-batter in Test matches played on English soil. Pant hammered six sixes for India in the first innings, and it first helped him break Rohit Sharma's record of most sixes by an Indian batter in the WTC and then go past Dhoni's tally of 78 sixes to become the third leading six-hitter for India in the five-day format of the game.
