IND vs ENG: Shubman's coronation at Headingley - Gill steps into Virat Kohli's shoes with ton at No 4

Shubman Gill (Getty Images) in Leeds: There was a rare outburst of emotion when Shubman Gill 's cover-drive raced through the practice pitches and thudded over the boundary cushions. The helmet was off in a flash; a wild swing of the arm followed as India's new Test skipper celebrated his hundred on his captaincy debut. It wasn't an unusual sight, and it certainly was an unusual occasion, so much so that it nearly made the youngster skip his usual bow-down celebration. The hug with his deputy Rishabh Pant was probably the cue to pose for the photographers as the 25-year-old made a very strong statement by scoring a gorgeous hundred at the Headingley Cricket Ground. From the moment he came out to bat, there was a sense of urgency in his approach. That urgency could have cost him his wicket when he went for a tight single off his sixth ball but had the rub of the green on his side, and Ollie Pope missing the stumps gave him an early reprieve. A testing little period followed as England attacked the right-hander's stumps and probed the corridor just outside the off-stump, but a tight approach and very little help from the surface meant he survived and then cashed in on the fuller length. The hosts kept searching for the glory ball when he walked out to bat, but even the change in length didn't extract a lot of purchase from the surface and turned out to be easy pickings for the Indian skipper, who put on a masterclass. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo A gorgeous masterclass. 'Wait until August to see what kind of style it's going to be': Shubman Gill ahead of Headingley Test The cover drives, straight drives, flicks, controlled pulls, and the trademark cuts in front of square were a treat to watch as he grew in confidence with every shot and looked much tighter as the innings progressed. After the initial urgency, there was a lot of calm in the way he approached the innings and put his head down to lay the foundation for a big one. First with Yashasvi Jaiswal and then with Rishabh Pant, Gill eased into his new No. 4 role and drove the side forward during a very crucial passage of play, as the match was very delicately poised when he came out to bat at the fall of debutant Sai Sudharsan's wicket. The sun had suddenly disappeared, and another wicket could have put India on the mat even after a terrific opening stand between KL Rahul and Jaiswal. How Shubman Gill prepared for the first Test vs England in Leeds | Exclusive from Nets Gill ensured there was no serious damage and literally walked the pre-match talk where he asserted that he wants to be the best batter in the series. Still early days in what is a very long series, but the Day 1 knock could have easily won a beauty pageant for the most good-looking hundred. There is something about Gill when he is in full flow, as not only does he make shot-making look ridiculously easy, he manages to be a visual delight while doing that. For Gill, the batter, who has been repeatedly questioned for his outings away from home, the hundred in Leeds will give the youngster immense satisfaction and a lot of self-belief before Gill - the captain - takes over. IND vs ENG: 'Gilly, ball ban gaya hai' - What Rishabh Pant-Shubman Gill chat caught on stump mic reveals

Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill have been solid after the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal (Image via X/@Rishabh_aaryan & SunRisers) A s the third session on Day 1 between India and England marches on, India's middle order looked in assured hands with the combined efforts of Rishabh Pant and captain Shubman Gill. Jaiswal, who has rapidly become England's new Test nemesis, notched up a sparkling 101 off 159 balls — his fifth Test ton and third against the English — to lay a solid platform for India. His dismissal, however, came at a crucial time: England captain Ben Stokes produced a timely breakthrough, trapping the left-hander and celebrating a much-needed scalp after plenty of work under the Leeds sun. In walked Pant at No. 5, and he wasted no time announcing his arrival. Facing Stokes for his second ball, Pant drilled a full delivery straight back past the England skipper for a scorching boundary. The shot drew an instant laugh from Stokes, who couldn't help but find laugh at Pant's aggressive greeting. Pant, however, appeared to show little to no reaction. — Sahil_Malhotra1 (@Sahil_Malhotra1) Since then, Pant has kept the energy high in the middle, regularly chatting with Gill between overs. In one such stump mic moment, Pant was heard telling Gill, ' Gilly, ball ban gaya hai. Banaya hai inhone abhi… ' - a remark hinting that England's bowlers have now got the ball to reverse swing, adding an extra layer of challenge on a pitch that still has good pace and carry. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? Jaiswal & Gill fifties put India on top as England bowlers struggle

Update: Date: 15:09 BST Title: Get Involved Content: #bbccricket, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply) This India team is not just super talented, but so entertaining. I've been so looking forward to Rishabh Pant playing. My favourite overseas player. Chris Vincent Sutton in Ashfield Update: Date: 45 overs Title: Ind 188-2 Content: Superb ball from Brydon Carse to beat Shubman Gill on the inside edge. There's an appeal for caught behind but it flicked the top of the front pad rather than the bat and England don't review. Still, the first time Gill has looked uncomfortable since very early in his innings so that's something I suppose... Update: Date: 15:06 BST Title: Post Content: Cheteshwar PujaraIndia batter on BBC Test Match Special If you are Ben Stokes, you are getting a little bit worried at this point. The ball will not swing a lot now, it will only get softer and there are runs on the board. Update: Date: 44.1 overs Title: Ind 186-2 Content: Brydon Carse returns and, with the field set for some stuff, tries to bluff Gill with a full ball to start. No good. Gill pushes it through the vacant mid-on region and gets back for three. Update: Date: 15:04 BST Title: Get Involved Content: #bbccricket, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply) Not just a debate over the better batsman but Bethell playing along with Root gives you the spin option and allows an extra pace bowler in the lineup. Not that they were ever going to drop Bashir or Pope, but this seam attack just doesn't look potent enough. Norm, Gloucester Update: Date: 44 overs Title: Ind 183-2 Content: Good over from Shoaib Bashir, keeping Jaiswal tied down despite the left-hander showing clear signs he wants to get after him. He skipped down at one stage but Bashir spotted him coming and dragged his length back. Good battle in that over. Update: Date: 43 overs Title: Ind 183-2 Content: India are going along very nicely here. They could hardly have hoped for a better first session and a half after being asked to bat first at Headingley. Both Jaiswal and Gill are looking very impressive at the crease. An inexperienced England attack has work to do. Update: Date: 14:58 BST Title: Post Content: Cheteshwar PujaraIndia batter on BBC Test Match Special Gill has batted really well today. He was in complete control from the moment he walked in. He has worked at timing the ball rather than hitting it really hard and it looks like number four suits him well. Update: Date: 42.2 overs Title: 50 for Shubman Gill Content: Ind 181-2 Fifty for Shubman Gill in his first match as captain! The India right-hander pulls the ball past Ben Stokes at mid-wicket to bring up his eighth Test half-century from 56 balls. That's his quickest in Test cricket. Update: Date: 42 overs Title: Ind 177-2 Content: Nicely bowled from Shoaib Bashir, enticing the drive from Shubman Gill and finding a thick outside edge. The India captain won't be too concerned, though, as the ball runs away from Josh Tongue and away for four. Update: Date: 14:54 BST Title: Post Content: Alison MitchellTest Match Special commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra Yashasvi Jaiswal took his opportunity. He found a different way of dealing with the short ball from Tongue. Update: Date: 41 overs Title: Ind 172-2 Content: This video can not be played 'It's gone aerial!' - Jaiswal hits Tongue for six There's a bit of excitement as a bouncer from Josh Tongue whistles past Yashasvi Jaiswal down the leg side but very close to the gloves. Ollie Pope at short leg was interested and Ben Stokes had both arms in the air but, after a brief chat, England decide against a review. More well-directed bouncers follow from Tongue and Jaiswal doesn't look entirely comfortable... but when the England quick offers a short, wide one, the India opener flays it away over the off side for six! Update: Date: 14:50 BST Title: Post Content: Cheteshwar PujaraIndia batter on BBC Test Match Special Bashir is trying to bowl quicker through the air. He is worried about Yashasvi Jaiswal taking him on. His second ball was slower and had more turn, so if he does that often he may get something out of this pitch. Update: Date: 40 overs Title: Ind 165-2 Content: Oof. Bit early for that I think, Euan, but it's certainly not gone as England would have hoped so far today. Steady enough start from Bashir after that first-ball boundary. Just two singles from the next five balls. Update: Date: 14:47 BST Title: Get Involved Content: #bbccricket, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply) Is anyone else wondering if Stokes has had his Ponting (2005, Edgbaston) or Hussain (2002, The Gabba) moment this morning? Euan, Newcastle Update: Date: 39.1 overs Title: Ind 163-2 Content: Time for some spin as Shoaib Bashir comes into the attack for the first time in the match. His first ball isn't that short but Yashasvi Jaiswal is still able to go back and cut it away nicely for four. Update: Date: 14:45 BST Title: Post Content: Cheteshwar PujaraIndia batter on BBC Test Match Special Jaiswal has really settled down into his innings. If you have a good opening partnership it puts pressure on the opposition team. England bowlers haven't been able to get the right length regularly enough and that is the reason they have struggled. They need to re-group after this drinks break. Update: Date: 14:45 BST Title: Post Content: Shubman Gill has also looked in very good touch after a nervy start in which he nearly ran himself out. However, the India skipper did just need a bit of treatment from the physio in that drinks break. He seemed to be have his back stretched out. Could be something and nothing but we'll keep an eye on that. This video can not be played 'You won't see two better shots than that' - Gill hits Woakes for back-to-back fours Update: Date: 14:43 BST Title: Post Content: Plenty for England to ponder. Not least, how to get rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has batted very nicely to bring up his 11th Test fifty this afternoon in Leeds... This video can not be played Jaiswal makes 'meaningful contribution' to India run total with half-century Update: Date: 39 overs Title: Drinks - Ind 159-2 Content: Jaiswal 67, Gill 40 Yep, the field has spread. No slips but a gully and a number of fielders out in the deep. Josh Tongue does indeed bang the ball in short throughout the over but Jaiswal isn't taking it on just yet. Time for drinks and a chance for England to regroup after a very good hour for India after lunch.

ENG vs IND: Why are India and England players wearing black armbands?

Cricket briefly took a backseat on Friday as India and England come together to honour the victims of the devastating Ahmedabad air tragedy ahead of the first Test at Headingley. Both teams observed a minute's silence and are wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives. The tragic incident took place on June 12, when a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London crashed shortly after departing from Ahmedabad, killing 274 people. The victims included 181 Indian nationals and 53 British citizens, making the tribute especially meaningful for both sides. India vice-captain Rishabh Pant expressed the team's sorrow, acknowledging the nation's pain and emphasizing their desire to bring some joy back through their performance. 'The emotions are high, but we'll give our best for the country,' Pant said. The crash, which shocked both nations and the global cricketing community, occurred when the aircraft lost control and hit a hostel at B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad. Only one person reportedly survived.
