An Indian student at the University of Calgary in Canada has died, the Consulate General of India in Vancouver said on Thursday.
The Consulate said it was "saddened by the sudden demise" of the Indian student, identified as Tanya Tyagi.
It was immediately not clear how the Indian student died and under what circumstances.
"We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at University of Calgary," it posted on X.
"The Consulate is in touch with the authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family. Our heartfelt condolences & prayers are with his family & friends of the deceased," it added.

As the Canadian authorities have not yet released an official statement, the exact cause of her death remains unknown. Meanwhile, an unverified post circulating on X, tagged the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) of India and claimed that Tanya suffered a fatal heart attack. 'Appeal 4 help. Tanya Tyagi, a student from Northeast Delhi residing at 559/11D, Lane No 12, Vijay Park, had gone to Canada for studies. She died on June 17, 2025, due to a heart attack. The student's family has appealed to PM Modi for help in bringing her body back,' the post read. Tanya Tyagi's death is the latest in a string of distressing incidents involving Indian students abroad. Earlier this year, 20-year-old Indian student Sudiksha Konanki went missing while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. A permanent US resident and a student at the University of Pittsburgh, she was last seen on March 6 at a beach near the Riu Punta Cana Hotel in La Altagracia province. According to Spanish media reports, she was wearing a brown two-piece bikini, large round earrings, a metal anklet, and multiple bracelets. Despite international attention, her whereabouts remain unknown.

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Rakesh Joshi on Thursday said that 215 DNA samples have been matched, and the mortal remains of 198 deceased in the Air India AI-171 plane crash have been handed over to their respective families. Speaking to reporters, Mr Joshi said, "215 DNA samples have been matched, of which the mortal remains of 198 deceased have been handed over to their the 198 deceased, 149 are Indian nationals, seven Portuguese, 32 British and one Canadian." He added that the mortal remains of 15 victims were dispatched by air and 183 by road via ambulances. Earlier in the day, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik said that 222 victims of the AI-171 plane crash have been identified so far, including 214 based on DNA samples and eight without DNA matching. He said their remains have been handed over to their families. "Police also do their part of the investigation, but other agencies and the experts do the technical part, like analysing the black box, and the investigation is underway... 222 people have been identified so far, 214 based on DNA samples and eight were identified without DNA and their bodies have been handed over to their families," Mr Malik told reporters. Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu held a high-level video conference with all Airport Directors across the country to review ground-level preparedness and passenger support mechanisms in the light of rescheduling of flights happening due to multiple reasons like post-accident checks, weather changes, closing of certain airspaces due to geopolitical tensions, etc. According to a release from the Civil Aviation Ministry, several directives were issued during the meeting, including Close liaison with airlines, which was emphasised to ensure passenger issues are addressed swiftly and on the spot. Availability of food, drinking water, and adequate seating facilities at terminals must be ensured, particularly during flight delays or congestion. Sufficient personnel must be deployed at key touchpoints to manage passenger grievances proactively. On June 12, the London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The tragedy claimed 241 lives out of 242 onboard, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

She was last seen on March 6. 'The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) is actively assisting in the investigation of a missing college student on vacation in the Dominican Republic. Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old female from Chantilly and a student at the University of Pittsburgh, was reported missing on Thursday, March 6, 2025,' according to Loudoun County Sheriff's Office's official statement. 'Konanki, a citizen of India, is a permanent resident of the United States and was reported to be vacationing with five female college friends at a resort in Punta Cana,' it added. According to sources, she disappeared while walking on the beach at a hotel in Punta Cana, La Altagracia province, east of the Dominican Republic. The LCSO was working closely with our federal partners at the US Department of State, FBI, DEA, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), as well as the University of Pittsburgh police, to support the ongoing investigation by the Dominican National Police. According to Spanish media sources, 'Last seen on March 6, 2025, at 4:50 am on the beach of the Riu Punta Cana Hotel,' says the image, which includes a portrait of the young Hindu woman. According to the file, Sudiksha has black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a brown two-piece bikini, large round earrings, a metal anklet on her right leg, yellow and steel bracelets on her right hand and another multi-coloured bracelet on her left hand, the sources added.
