Dominican nightclub Jet Set, photo by Str/XinhuaThe death toll of the roof collapse at a Dominican nightclub has risen to 113, and is expected to climb as emergency crews continue to search the rubble more than 24 hours after the disaster. Dominican public figures from the worlds of music, politics, and sport are among those who were killed when the ceiling caved in an hour into merengue singer Rubby Pérez's midnight headline show at the Jet Set club. Pérez himself and his saxophonist, Luis Solís, were confirmed dead early this morning (April 9), and Major League Baseball has paid tribute to former players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco. Dominican officials have not commented on potential causes of the collapse, which also injured more than 255 survivors.
Pérez has been a merengue luminary for decades, playing in bands including Los Juveniles del Sabor in the 1970s after studying music at the National Conservatory of Santo Domingo. He sang on hits with the Wilfrido Vargas Orchestra that helped make merengue an international phenomenon, before launching a solo career in 1987. Popular throughout his life, he released several platinum albums and, as his legacy grew, headlined U.S. venues including Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden. In 2010, the Committee of Latin American Political Parties in the United States recognized Pérez for helping victims of that year's Haiti earthquake.

Rapper Fat Joe Slammed For Sex And Falling In Love With A Minor

The ghosts of Fat Joe's alleged messy past are coming back to haunt him through a familiar channel! A former staff member of the rapper has accused him of engaging in illicit activity with teenage girls while they worked together. Fat Joe's camp has vehemently denied the allegations and accuses his former staff of being vindictive in this regard, simply because the rapper had previously sued them. The rapper's former hype man, Terrance T.A. Dixon, filed a lawsuit on Thursday stating that there were at least two underage females with whom Joe had sexual relations, and another with whom he allegedly fell in love. In the documents, Dixon's lawyer, Tyrone A. Blackburn, noted that a 16-year-old girl of Dominican descent once offered to perform oral and other sexual acts on Joe in exchange for money, clothes, and cell phone bill payments. Dixon even alleges that Joe entered into a sexual affair with a 15-year-old Caucasian girl after meeting with her at a concert abroad. According to him, Joe had regularly flown her to New York and Miami and paid for a BBL because her body was not fully developed. Dixon added that the girl in question is now married to a professional athlete. In the lawsuit, Dixon alleges that Fat Joe also fell in love with a Latina, and a sexual relationship started between them at just 15 years old. Joe reportedly sorted out all her financial commitments and had taken her abroad while he was performing on tours. He even got her into a condo close to where he and his wife lived in Florida and had reportedly considered leaving his wife to move in with her. According to Dixon, Joe has a sticky predilection for underage females, as he had sung about in his track "She Loves My Mama." The former hype man continued that Joe also involved him in his shenanigans by forcing him to have sex with women after his concerts. At the time, these acts happened in front of other people. As reported by TMZ, Dixon added that Joe underpaid him as a music collaborator, did not give him songwriting rights, and hid royalties and backend settlements. Reacting to the damning accusations leveled against the rapper by his ex-employee, his lawyer, Joe Tacopina, clarified that the claims were false. In his words, Dixon was merely trying to get his pound of flesh, and his lawsuit was a reactionary move to Joe's lawsuit against him. Describing it as "lies intended to damage his reputation and force a settlement through public pressure," Tacopina added that the police were fully aware of his extortionate demands from the rapper. In April, Joe headed to court to name-drop Dixon in a defamation lawsuit after he first came out with his pedophilia allegations against Joe publicly. Joe's lawsuit explained that Dixon got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when he began walking for the rapper in 2006. Their partnership reportedly ended amicably in 2019, until six years later, when Dixon began making slanderous accusations against Joe. This is not Joe's first rodeo with lawsuits and Lego processes. In 2013, the rapper was sentenced to four months in prison by U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman for failing to file tax returns with the IRS, resulting in tax debts. As seen on the DOJ New Jersey's site, Joe, whose real name is Joseph Cartagena, had already pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy L. Waldor to Counts One and Two of a four-count information, for failing to file tax returns for the 2007-2010 tax years. The two counts relate to tax years 2007 and 2008. In terms of the plea agreement, however, all four years, including 2009 and 2010, were combined as a loss on tax during sentencing. In his 2013 case, according to the documents brought to court, there are statements that: Joe received payment for musical performances and got royalties on the sales of his music. Such monies were obtained in three ways from Terror Squad Production Inc. (Terror Squad), Miramar Music Touring Inc. (Miramar), and FJTS Corp. Cartagena acknowledged that his gross income in 2007 exceeded $1.18 million, in 2008 exceeded $1.28 million, in 2009 exceeded $265,000, and in 2010 exceeded $630,000. The sum of the tax loss calculated by the government then amounted to $718,038. Judge Waldor, alongside Joe's four-month sentence, ordered him to stay on supervised release for one year and pay a fine of $ 15,000. He was expected to check in by August 26, 2013, and begin serving his term in jail. In 2023, the rapper made a drastic move by shedding a massive 200 pounds. While he had a brief stint of depression, Joe believes his decision to adopt a healthy lifestyle changed his life for good. The process also ushered him into a new era of discovering himself, especially as he had to deal with the crushing blow of his best friend's death. He felt an epiphany when he attended his bestie, Big Pun's, funeral. The rapper said: "I went to his funeral, and I felt like Ebenezer Scrooge. Like, I seen me, and I'm looking at his little daughter. She was the same age as my daughter. I said, 'You gotta lose weight; otherwise, you outta here.'" Before the wheels of stardom chose him, the New York native experienced a gloomy childhood with various episodes of bullying and betrayal. In a 2022 report, The Blast shared that the rapper recalled being bullied every day as a junior high student. The experience changed him forever, transforming him into a different person. Since the age of 2, the rapper noted that he was tagged "Fat Joey," and it stuck. "You know, I'm not gonna lie, it's scary looking out the classroom window knowing that there are 20 guys waiting to beat my ass," Joe noted, adding that they never fought fair, as they would always jump him. Joe added that his best friend was also forced to join them at some point, and after a while, he left him to his fate. What fate awaits Fat Joe in court with these allegations?

Bad Bunny blasts ICE agents as ‘sons of bitches' after filming operations in Puerto Rico: ‘Look, those motherf—rs'

Latin music mega-star Bad Bunny expressed outrage while witnessing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Puerto Rico on Tuesday. In a clip shared to his Instagram story, the artist recorded several law enforcement vehicles stopped on the side of the road, while officers appeared to interrogate several unidentified individuals. Bad Bunny could be heard insulting the ICE agents over the recording in Spanish. 'Look, those motherf——s are in these cars, RAV-4s. They're here in Pontezuela,' he said in Spanish, mentioning ICE working on the Avenida Pontezuela in Carolina, a city east of Puerto Rico's capital, San Juan. 'Sons of b——, instead of leaving the people alone and working there,' he added. ICE has ramped up operations in the U.S. territory since President Donald Trump's inauguration. Spanish newspaper El País reported on June 1 that 445 people have been detained on the island since Jan. 26. 'The vast majority are men, and nearly 72% of those detained are Dominican citizens, followed by Haitians, Venezuelans and Mexicans,' the outlet stated. 3 Bad Bunny took to social media to criticize the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Puerto Rico on Tuesday. Jonah Elkowitz / New York Post The report described the city as being 'under siege' thanks to the federal government's raids. Puerto Rico's governor, Jenniffer González-Colón – a Republican who supported Trump in the 2024 election – has stated that she will not get in the way of ICE operations, even those done in churches and hospitals. González-Colón stated that she 'cannot afford' to risk losing federal funds by interrupting deportations operations. The subject of illegal immigration enforcement has reached a fever pitch in the United States in recent weeks. Protests against Trump's immigration crackdown turned violent in Los Angeles last week, with the president calling in the National Guard and several hundred U.S. Marines to quell the chaos. 3 The Instagram story posted by the Latin music mega-star showed law enforcement vehicles stopped on the side of the road as officers appeared to interrogate several unidentified individuals. Instagram/@badbunnypr The artist, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is the latest to join the growing chorus of celebrities decrying Trump's immigration agenda. Kim Kardashian, whose sister Kendall Jenner dated Bad Bunny in 2023, made waves on social media earlier this month by denouncing the Los Angeles ICE raids as 'inhumane.' 'When we're told that ICE exists to keep our country safe and remove violent criminals — great. But when we witness innocent, hardworking people being ripped from their families in inhumane ways, we have to speak up. We have to do what's right,' she wrote in an Instagram story. 'Scream' actress Jenna Ortega similarly encouraged her 37.2 million Instagram followers to 'be angry' over ICE operations in an Instagram story last weekend. 3 445 people in Puetro Rico have been detained since January, according to Spanish newspaper El País. AP 'The world is crying all over. People in Los Angeles are being torn away from their everyday lives & love… The ones they've built so tirelessly over the years, just like you… Innocent civilians in Iran are caught in the middle of warfare. Palestinian cries are still being buried in every day [sic] media. My thoughts are heavy, my heart follows.' She added, 'Listen to one another & love, but be angry too. Educate yourself as best you can. To say this doesn't concern you, or that it isn't your problem, is a privilege under abuse.'

Tyler Perry Hit With Sexual Assault Lawsuit Amid Trending 'Straw' Movie

Tyler Perry is in the news again, this time for a scandalous reason! The famous movie producer, who is being talked about for his latest Netflix movie "Straw," has now been sued for sexual assault by a cast member in his hit show "The Oval." Tyler Perry's accuser, Derek Dixon, claimed the assault began in 2020 after the filmmaker approached him to offer him a role in one or more of his productions. Dixon claimed that after Perry took his number and promised to get in touch in 2019, he then offered him a two-episode role in a show titled "Ruthless." Afterward, the producer reportedly invited him to his home in 2020, with the hope that a friendship between them would lead to more acting roles, so he accepted the offer. While there, Dixon recalled passing the night in the guest room as he was too intoxicated. As the night went on, Perry reportedly got into bed with him and started rubbing his thighs; although he rejected his advances, Perry remained committed to winning him over. After that episode, Dixon landed a significant role as Dale in "The Oval," and then his alleged nightmare started with the sexually suggested texts from Perry getting intense. Perry also informed him that he bears a sexual preference for men. Dixon also drew similarities between his on-screen role and the type of men Perry reportedly preferred - loyal and dependent on him. He described Dale in the show as gay, homeless, and desperate, who had to offer sex in return for assistance or favors. As confirmed by TMZ, Dixon reportedly told Perry off quietly, fearing that doing so with firmness might affect his growing acting career and damage his standing with the producer. Dixon disclosed revisiting Perry in 2020 in Atlanta. What reportedly began as a warm exchange turned into sexual charges as Perry reportedly grabbed the actor's throat and said suggestive words. The lawsuit also carried evidence of text messages exchanged between Perry and Dixon where he reportedly said, "No straight man would be going on walks with you or cooking dinner for you unless they wanted to f-ck you. I would f-ck you." He added that another scary incident happened in 2021 at Perry's Atlanta home, where he was staying. He recalled wearing nothing but underwear and the producer undressing him after he came in to hug him goodbye. After these series of alleged encounters, Dixon claimed he forwarded a complaint to the Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission in June 2024. He even quit "The Oval" based on finding the constant sexual harassment unbearable. He is now suing the producer and his firm, Tyler Perry Studios, for quid pro quo, workplace sexual harassment, sexual assault, and battery. Dixon also wants $260 million in damages. Dixon's accusations come right on the heels of the actor's blazing-hot success with his latest movie, which was dropped on Netflix. Titled "Straw," the film features Taraji P. Henson as the lead actor playing the role of Janiyah Wiltkinson. Since its release on Netflix, "Straw" has sparked numerous conversations centered around the filmmaker's talent. While some view the story as his best one yet, others think it reinforces the narrative of him portraying a Black woman who cannot get her life together in yet another of his movies. The stats for the movie are living up to the hype as well. In the week of June 2 to June 8, "Straw" reportedly gathered over 45 million hours of viewing from subscribers on Netflix in just two days following its release on June 6. Data on Netflix also shows that the movie was in the top 10 in 81 countries worldwide. It topped the charts in countries such as the United States, Venezuela, Bolivia, El Salvador, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, and Panama, among others. As 2024 rounded up, Perry's home was targeted by masked intruders who attempted to break into his sanctuary and part with his valuables. The Blast shared that law enforcement officers identified four mask-wearing raiders who wanted to infiltrate the building. Thanks to the producer's sophisticated security system, the invaders were immediately captured with the home's thermal imaging camera, which alerted the security guards on the property, forcing the invaders to leave. Items recovered from the scene revealed that the invaders came with tools, including crowbars, bolt cutters, screwdrivers, gloves, a hat, and a saw. Authorities also discovered a cell phone alongside these sharp objects. By the time the building's security personnel called the Los Angeles Police Department to report the incident, the suspects had fled, resulting in zero arrests and only reports for attempted burglary and investigation. The producer lent his voice to advocate for better treatment of victims of the Los Angeles wildfires as they dealt with the aftermath of the damage. Perry reacted to the decision of the insurance companies to cancel policies for homeowners in Los Angeles before the wildfires. "Watching a daughter use a garden hose to try to protect her 90-year-old parents' home because their insurance was canceled was just gut-wrenching to me," wrote the actor on his Instagram story. He wondered why the insurance companies would decide to leave the homeowners without a safety net, especially after they had paid premiums all their lives. "Does anyone else find it appalling that insurance companies can take billions of dollars out of communities for years and then, all of a sudden, be allowed to cancel millions of policies for the very people they became rich on?" he stated further as he asked how he could offer comfort to the affected parties. Perry's questions also raised attention to the issue as his colleagues contributed to the discourse, wondering about the legal basis for such acts by these companies. Will Tyler Perry's new case go to trial, or is a settlement around the corner?
