Drinking too much alcohol? 4 ways to have less, from smaller glasses to saying ‘Enough'

Drinking too much alcohol? 4 ways to have less, from smaller glasses to saying ‘Enough'

Drinking alcohol does not do your body any good – and it can become addictive.

Though we have heard the warning a thousand times, we often disregard it when there is something to celebrate or we meet up with friends – situations when, for many people, beer, wine or spirits simply seem to belong.
Does the
occasional hangover come with the territory? A particularly bad one could prompt you to critically examine your alcohol consumption – and perhaps try to
cut down
To drink less, it can help to drink differently. An awareness campaign by Germany's health ministry is suggesting four methods.
1. Start with less
A good way to start is to always order the smallest quantity of an alcoholic drink in a restaurant or bar – a 0.33 litre glass of beer instead of a 0.5 litre one, or a half-pint instead of a pint, for example.

Do we really need so much protein? Gym bros say yes, but don't let them scare you

There are a lot of health warnings telling us what we should cut back on, if not outright avoid. Advertisement Fat is terrible for our heart and arteries. Salt will give us high blood pressure. Sugar is even worse, making us diabetic. And let's not forget about ultra-processed foods that are full of chemicals, preservatives and additives. They'll definitely give you cancer and kill you, they say. Is there anything to enjoy guilt-free? A lot of online health experts and diet gurus, as well as muscle-bound gym bros, insist that what we need is more protein. 'The more protein, the better,' they scream in social media videos. Most of them are highly annoying. In their weights room with dumbbells in the background, in a shirt too small for their buff pectorals, they look directly at the camera as they try to scare us. 'If you're like most people, you're just not getting enough protein!' they warn urgently. Proteins are essential for building and repairing muscles, as well as a host of other bodily functions. Photo: SCMP It's the same alarmist tone as the callisthenics exercise advert that constantly invades my middle-aged social media feed. Preying on male vanity, they suggest if I cannot do 50 push-ups in a row, I need to seriously pay attention and sign up now for their easy daily routine to get back in shape.

Are your feet always cold? It could be narrowed arteries and leg pain could be next

Having chronically cold feet is not pleasant – not for you nor for your partner when you snuggle up to them under the covers. Advertisement There are many possible causes of chronically cold feet. If it is because of poor circulation, it could be down to a common condition known as peripheral artery disease, or PAD, in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the legs or arms. This is usually a sign of atherosclerosis, a build-up of plaque – fats, cholesterol and other substances – in the inner lining of the arteries, which can cause the arteries to harden and narrow, impeding blood flow. How can you identify that this is happening before the condition worsens and your symptoms broaden beyond cold feet to, say, leg pain when walking? 'If you want to know whether your arteries are at risk of plaque build-up, first consider whether you're in a risk group,' says Dr Siamak Pourhassan, a vascular surgeon in Oberhausen, Germany.

Israel kills 38 Palestinians in Gaza near food distribution centres, says health ministry

At least 38 Palestinians were killed on Monday in new shootings in areas of food distribution centres in the south of the Gaza Strip, the local Health Ministry said. Advertisement The toll was the deadliest yet in the near-daily shootings that have taken place as thousands of Palestinians move through Israeli military-controlled areas to reach food centres run by the private contractor Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a US-backed aid group bypassing the longstanding UN-led system in the tiny enclave. Two witnesses said Israeli troops opened fire early on Monday in an attempt to control the crowds. There was no immediate comment by the Israeli military. It has said in previous instances that troops fired warning shots at what it calls 'suspects' approaching their positions. Gaza's Health Ministry said most of the dead were trying to reach the GHF centre near the southern city of Rafah, although a few were on the roads to a newly opened hub on the outskirts of the nearby city of Khan Younis. Advertisement Two Palestinians trying to get food at the Rafah site, Heba Jouda and Mohammed Abed, told the Associated Press that Israeli forces fired on the crowds at around 4am at the Flag Roundabout. The roundabout, hundreds of metres from the GHF centre, has repeatedly been the scene of shootings.
