Glasgow woman caught smuggling cocaine into Barlinnie

Sarah Dempster went to the East End jail on the afternoon of December 29, 2022 to visit William Dempster.
During the visit, a prison officer's attention was drawn to the table where they were sitting because the pair were moving suspiciously and looking around the room.
Employees monitoring CCTV saw the 37-year-old woman take an item from her clothes and pass it to the inmate.
A worker went to the table and the prisoner was taken for a body search.
0.7g of cocaine was found on him, worth £20-50, along with white tablets later identified as Buprenorphine.
The visitor was arrested.

Ms Dempster appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court earlier this week after she pleaded guilty to taking the substances into the prison.
Her lawyer explained: "These are quite clearly very serious offences, she accepts that.
"She was married to Mr Dempster and he was imprisoned at Barlinnie.
"She has Bipolar Disorder and she said her mental health was particularly poor at that time.
"Threats were made to her and her husband. She does not remember collecting the packets but she knows it was not a good decision."
Sheriff Jonathan Guy replied: "It's a very serious offence.
"Taking drugs into prison puts them into the system. The court has to take it seriously. The sentence needs to signal society's disapproval."
Ms Dempster was sentenced to one year of supervision and tagged for eight months, forcing her to stay at home between 9am and 6am each day.

Kevin Devine downed drinks at an Italian airport and on board a flight to Edinburgh before acting aggressively towards air stewards after learning his long term partner was leaving him. The oil and gas worker shouted and swore, refused to fasten his seatbelt when requested to and made a telephone call during the flight from Catania, Sicily to Edinburgh Airport. He also repeatedly gesticulated and adopted an aggressive demeanour towards three members of the cabin crew while on board the easyJet aircraft on September 27 last year. Shocked staff were forced to alert the police to Devine's rowdy behaviour and after landing at the Scottish capital officers boarded the plane and arrested the drunk 52-year-old. Devine pleaded guilty to three offences under The Air Navigation Order and Civil Aviation Act when his case called at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month and sentence was deferred to last Thursday, June 19. The court was told Devine, from Dundee, had been excused attendance at the hearing as he is currently out of the country for several months working off shore with the oilfield services company Saipem. Sheriff Thomas Welsh agreed to deal with the matter in his absence and sentenced the North Sea quality control coordinator to pay a total fine of £1,475 to mark the offences. Devine, who also owns the real estate firm Devine Property Holdings Ltd, had been returning home after several weeks away when the ship he had been working on dropped him off at Sicily. While waiting on his flight at the island's Catania Airport the father of two telephoned his partner who told him she was leaving him and didn't want to see him on his return to Scotland. He was said to have become upset and began drinking alcohol in the airport lounge before continuing to down drinks while travelling home onboard the easyJet flight. The off shore engineer then became aggressive towards cabin crew after they warned him to stop using his vape and not to make telephone calls during the flight. Devine refused instructions to secure his seatbelt on take off and landing and shouted and swore at cabin crew members Colin Robinson, Lauren Hannah and Demi Gardner. A passenger who witnessed the drunken outburst said Devine had been 'a complete nightmare' during the flight. They said: 'The guy didn't seem too drunk when we took off but he began drinking during the flight and soon became abusive towards the crew. 'He was using his vape on a good few occasions, which was a complete disregard for all the other passengers, and was also on his phone to someone. 'He seemed quite upset about something and was shouting and swearing at the easyJet staff who had politely asked him to stop. 'The crew tried to take the vape off him but he wouldn't hand it over and they just didn't have any choice but to inform the police about his behaviour. 'He totally deserved to be arrested when we landed in Edinburgh and to be honest he was a complete nightmare during the flight.' Devine pleaded guilty to charges of being drunk on board the flight and failing to obey commands issued by the pilot and cabin crew, refuse to secure his seatbelt, make a telephone call and use a vape on board the aircraft and refuse to hand over the vape to the crew. He also admitted to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing and acting aggressively, all while on board the easyJet flight between Catania, Sicily, and Edinburgh Airport on September 27 last year.

Man jailed for throwing glass bottle at Celtic goalkeeper during Old Firm match

A man who chucked a bottle at Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo during a derby match with Rangers has been jailed for eight months. Andrew Watt, 34, launched the missile at the Finnish international at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2025. Watt initially threw a cigarette at Mr Sinisalo after Celtic scored their equaliser through striker Adam Idah. He then picked up a half bottle of Buckfast and hurled it at the goalkeeper who celebrated the goal in front of Rangers fans. The bottle was later handed to police officers by a Rangers substitute. Watt was identified the following day on CCTV due to his 'distinctive white teeth'. Watt pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Sinisalo. Sheriff Mark McGuire told Watt, of Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, that his actions were not of a 'fan' but a 'vicious drunken hooligan.' The sheriff added: 'Your motive was victim blaming. 'You came to throw a bottle after he celebrated his team scoring an equaliser. 'That is his job – you victim was doing his job – the man was at his work. 'In what possible world could you or anyone else think it is acceptable to throw a bottle at someone at his work? 'Had the bottle hit him, the consequences could have been catastrophic, career ending or worse. 'In a febrile atmosphere in a stadium which holds over 50,000 people, your actions could have sparked a riot. 'It was not just an assault on Mr Sinisalo – what you did could have endangered everyone man, woman and child that afternoon. 'In all the circumstances, to punish you and deter others from acting like you did and to protect the public, I am satisfied there is no alternative to a custodial sentence.' Watt was also banned from all football matches for a period of six-and-a-half years. The court heard that after Adam Idah scored, there was a VAR check on the goal to see if it would be allowed. After a two to three minute stoppage, the referee awarded the equalising goal to Celtic. Prosecutor Leo McGinn said: 'At that point, Mr Sinisalo turned back to his own goal towards the Rangers fans and pumped his fists. 'This sparked an angry reaction from the Rangers fans behind the goal and a half bottle of Buckfast was thrown in his direction. 'The bottle did not strike him but landed on the field of play.' The bottle was handed over to police officers by a Rangers substitute but the perpetrator was unknown at the time. A CCTV investigation was carried out by police the next day which identified Watt as being responsible. Mr McGinn added: 'He was seen to throw a lit cigarette in Mr Sinisalo's direction which had not been spotted by officers. 'Watt could be identified by his build and distinctive white teeth.' Watt later handed himself into police officers after he was aware that they were looking for him. Kevin Corr, defending, told the sentencing that Mr Sinisalo was 'not gloating' before the assault took place. The lawyer added: 'The stadium was tense at the time while the decision was being awarded. 'My client had been consuming alcohol on the morning off the game and continued drinking during the match. 'It was not a full half bottle of Buckfast as it was in the second half of the match. 'He knows that this is the behaviour of someone in their teens rather than someone in his mid-thirties – there is no attempt to minimise or justify what happened.' The hearing was told that Watt has 21 previous convictions, which include two football-related matters from 2013 and 2015 – the latter of which saw him jailed for ten months and handed a three-year football ban. Man, 36, to appear in court after 'armed robbery' at East Kilbride petrol station

Police were alerted to an incident at the BP petrol station on the Queensway at around 2am this morning. ‌ It is claimed staff were approached by a man with a knife and cash and vapes were stolen. ‌ The suspect was identified via CCTV at the petrol station and traces to a property where the money, vapes, knife and a stash of other stolen items were recovered. A 36-year-old man was arrested in relation to the incident and held in custody to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court. A police spokesperson said: "At about 2am on Thursday, June 19 officers were called to a petrol station on the Queensway East Kilbride in relation to a robbery. "Staff reported a male presented a knife to them and thereafter took money and vapes from within. The male was identified from CCTV and officers attended the household of a 36-year-old male where they recovered the money, vapes and knife along with various other stolen property from previous incidents.
