Kamal Haasan thanks Tamil Nadu for supporting him amid Kannada language row; refuses to address the issue: ‘This is not the stage for it'

Indian Express04-06-2025

Amid the controversy over his comments on the Kannada language, which sparked calls to boycott his upcoming film Thug Life in Karnataka, actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Wednesday extended gratitude to the people of Tamil Nadu for their unwavering support. Although he refrained from addressing the row directly, Kamal stated that he would comment on the matter soon.
'I should thank the entire state of Tamil Nadu, which stood behind me. I completely understand the meaning of the phrase, 'Uyire, Urave, Tamizhe (my life and family are Tamil)' that I use during public addresses. And I stand by it,' he said during a press conference in Chennai, ahead of the release of Thug Life on Thursday.
Mentioning that there are topics beyond Thug Life that need to be discussed, Kamal added, 'But this is not the stage for it. It is my duty to talk about those issues in a separate (press) meet, and I will organise it.' The movie's team also refrained from holding a Q&A session with reporters.
Speaking on the occasion, Kamal Haasan heaped praise on Mani Ratnam, noting that working on Thug Life was, for him, what Nayakan was for his co-star Nassar. It may be noted here that Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan's Nayakan marked a major breakthrough in Nassar's career, earning him widespread acclaim. 'The young Mani I saw back then has transformed into a cinema gyani (scholar) now,' he said.
Following Kamal's 'Kannada was born out of Tamil' remark recently, a controversy had erupted in Karnataka with many pro-Kannada groups taking offence to it. After Minister for Kannada and Culture, Shivaraj Tangadagi, wrote to the Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC), urging a ban on Kamal's films in the state until he issued a public apology, the actor publicly declared that he would not apologise, stating that there was nothing wrong with what he said. Following this, the KFCC officially announced a ban on the release of Thug Life.
Meanwhile, he approached the Karnataka High Court seeking protection to ensure the smooth release of the movie. However, the court reprimanded him and urged him to express regret over the comment. In the most recent development, his production house, Raaj Kamal Films International, informed the HC on Tuesday that the actor would hold a dialogue with KFCC. Till then, it said, it would not press for the release of Thug Life in the state.

Madurai: Lord Murugan represents the essence of Tamil culture, Bharat, and Bhartiya identity, Governor R N Ravi said on Saturday after visiting the venue of the Murugan devotees conference (Muruga Bakthargal Manadu) in Madurai, a day ahead of the main event organised by Hindu Munnani. The governor praised the organisers, particularly Hindu Munnani, for assembling replicas of all six sacred abodes, traditionally spread across Tamil Nadu, at a single venue. "I have visited each of the Arupadai Veedu individually, but seeing them all together in one place is a divine experience. This is a long-held dream come true for many, and such a concept should be considered for a permanent setup in the future," he added. Earlier in the day, Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president G K Vasan said after visiting the site that the devotees' conference will trigger a positive change in Tamil Nadu and 'pave the way for good people to serve society.' Later in the evening, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthiran and Maharashtra governor C P Radhakrishnan visited the Arupadai Veedu exhibit and offered prayers. TNCC chief K Selvaperunthagai said BJP cannot deceive the people through Murugan conference, asserting that Tamils are conscious of the true intentions of the party that pursues 'anti-democratic electoral practices, language and economic policies. Mahmoud Khalil vows to continue protesting Israel's war in Gaza after coming back home

A Palestinian activist who was detained for more than three months pushed his infant son's stroller with one hand and pumped his fist in the air with the other as supporters welcomed him home Saturday (June 21, 2025). Mahmoud Khalil greeted friends and spoke briefly to reporters Saturday (June 21, 2025) at New Jersey's Newark International Airport a day after leaving a federal immigration facility in Louisiana. A former Columbia University graduate student and symbol of U.S. President Donald Trump's clampdown on campus protests, he vowed to continue protesting Israel's war in Gaza. 'The U.S. government is funding this genocide, and Columbia University is investing in this genocide,' he said. 'This is why I will continue to protest with everyone of you. Not only if they threaten me with detention. Even if they would kill me, I would still speak up for Palestine.' Mr. Khalil, a legal U.S. resident whose wife gave birth during his 104 days of detention, said he also will speak up for the immigrants he left behind in the detention center. 'Whether you are a citizen, an immigrant, anyone in this land, you're not illegal. That doesn't make you less of a human,' he said. The 30-year-old international affairs student wasn't accused of breaking any laws during the protests at Columbia. However, the government has said noncitizens who participate in such demonstrations should be expelled from the U.S. for expressing views the administration considers to be antisemitic and 'pro-Hamas,' referring to the Palestinian militant group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The Government filed notice Friday (June 20, 2025) evening that it is appealing Mr. Khalil's release. Joining Mr. Khalil at the airport, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York said his detention violated the First Amendment and was 'an affront to every American.' 'He has been accused, baselessly, of horrific allegations simply because the Trump administration and our overall establishment disagrees with his political speech,' she said. 'The Trump administration knows that they are waging a losing legal battle," Ocasio-Cortez added. "They are violating the law, and they know that they are violating the law.'
