Ukraine developing interceptor drones to counter Russian attacks, Zelensky says

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that Ukraine was working on the rapid development of interceptor drones to counter the swarms of Russian drones that have been descending on Ukrainian cities in increasing numbers in recent weeks.
Ukrainian officials have noted the sharply increased numbers of Iranian-designed Shahed drones deployed by Russian forces in a single night and say it is vital to develop technology capable of tackling the threat they pose.
'We are also working separately on interceptor drones, which are intended to enhance protection against Shahed drones,' Zelensky said in his nightly video address.
'Several of our domestic enterprises – and, accordingly, different types of drones – are delivering results. Production volumes of interceptors are already increasing.'
Russian forces have been deploying more than 400 drones in a single night, with more than 470 fired on more than one occasion.
A total of 440 drones – plus 32 missiles – were deployed this week in a 'combined' attack on Kyiv that flattened part of an apartment building and killed 28 people.

Putin says Russia has shared peace proposals with Israel and Iran

President Vladimir Putin said Friday he has secured Israel's pledge to keep Russian personnel at Iran's Russia-built nuclear power plant secure and that he has reached out to both sides to try to end the week-old war. Answering questions on a variety of issues at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin also warned Ukraine that it could lose more territory if it keeps rejecting Russia's conditions for peace. Putin said Russia has proposed 'some ideas' for a possible settlement between Iran and Israel that are currently being discussed. He said Moscow asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ensure the security of Russian personnel who are working to construct two more reactors at the nuclear power plant in Iran's port of Bushehr and that he also raised the issue with US President Donald Trump. 'Prime Minister Netanyahu has agreed with that, and President Trump has promised to support our legitimate demands,' Putin said. But he strongly rejected allegations that Moscow has failed to back its ally, Tehran, saying the Kremlin has maintained good ties with both Iran and Israel. He noted that Israel is home to nearly 2 million people from Russia and other former Soviet nations, 'a factor that we always have taken into account'.

Trump to make Iran war decision in 'next two weeks'

Trump to make Iran war decision in 'next two weeks' US President Donald Trump has left the world guessing whether the US will join Israel's strikes against Iran. Photo: Reuters US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he will decide whether to join Israel's strikes on Iran within the next two weeks, as there is still a "substantial" chance of talks to end the conflict. Trump's move to hit the pause button could open up space for diplomacy, after days of fevered questions about whether or not he would order US military action against Tehran. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt read out a message from Trump after what she called "a lot of speculation" about whether the United States would be "directly involved" in the conflict. "Based on the fact that there's a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks," Trump said in the statement. Trump has set two-week deadlines that subsequently shifted on a series of other tough topics in the past, including the Russia-Ukraine war – but Leavitt denied he was putting off a decision. "If there's a chance for diplomacy, the president's always going to grab it, but he's not afraid to use strength as well," Leavitt said. At the same time Leavitt reinforced the sense of urgency, telling reporters that Iran could produce a nuclear weapon in the space of a "couple of weeks". "Iran has all that it needs to achieve a nuclear weapon. All they need is a decision from the supreme leader to do that, and it would take a couple of weeks to complete the production of that weapon," she said. Iran denies seeking a nuclear weapon, saying that its programme is for peaceful purposes. (AFP)
