All routes lead to Mideast and Iran-Israel war won't shut down the 'Silicon Road'

The big theme in Asian supply chains over the past decade has been relocation. Entire industries have sought to pare their reliance on China by shifting manufacturing to other low-cost destinations like Vietnam and India. Japanese carmakers and Indian pharmaceutical firms have chosen Mexico to be closer to American demand. More recently, however, a new route is emerging — from Asia to the Middle East.Speculation that the US is on the verge of joining Israel's attack on Iran may unsettle business leaders' current plans and delay activity along the corridor. However, as long as hostilities don't spiral into a catastrophic event, such as the closing of the all-important Strait of Hormuz to shipping, they are unlikely to derail the economic case for a reprisal of the historic Silk Road.
Asian firms are drawn to the Middle East because of the strong appetite in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to leverage their oil resources — and invest trillions of dollars in everything from electric cars to artificial intelligence. The emerging Silicon Road, as I like to think of it, is drawing top executives from Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei and Mumbai to opportunities in Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha. Bankers from London, Singapore and Tokyo aren't too far behind.
The best evidence for the new passage comes from the 1,500-plus firms that Coalition Greenwich talks to annually across its Asia Large Corporate Banking and Trade Finance studies. In the latter, diversification, which has been high on the executives' priority list since President Donald Trump's first term, gained momentum last year, with 34% of the 700-plus respondents saying that they were tapping new locations, versus 29% in 2023. India and Vietnam were predictably high on the list of destinations. Japan also received some mentions because of the export advantage accorded by a cheap yen. But the presentation slide that piqued the most interest among Coalition's banking clients is one that showed Asia's burgeoning corporate-banking ties with the Persian Gulf.
The South Korean chaebols are well entrenched in the Middle East, across a gamut of old and new industries. The construction wing of Samsung Group was the primary contractor for Burj Khalifa, the landmark Dubai skyscraper. The Hyundai Motor Group's engineering affiliate has built nuclear-power reactors for the UAE. The conglomerate is now setting up a car-assembly plant in Saudi Arabia. The Korean internet leader Naver Corp. has built large-scale virtual versions of Mecca, Medina and Jeddah for better city planning. The Koreans' success has become a blueprint for others. Compared with 2020, 9% more of Taiwanese and Indian companies, and 5%-6% more of Chinese and Hong Kong firms, point out the Middle East as a market where they have outbound banking activities. This isn't a flash in the pan. 'Not only are more companies citing the corridor, they are using more banks to do business in it,' says Ruchirangad Agarwal, the head of Coalition Greenwich's corporate banking practice for Asia and the Middle East. In terms of usage, European banks' share of this corporate banking market is a stable 29%. That isn't surprising, given the long history of British institutions like HSBC Holdings Plc and Standard Chartered Plc in both Asia and the Middle East. Even BNP Paribas SA — whose predecessor set up operations in China and India in 1860 — came to the Gulf region in the early 1970s in pursuit of petrodollars.The more interesting bit in the survey is a growing acknowledgement of Chinese and Japanese lenders. About 30% of banking and capital market assets in the Dubai International Financial Center hub are controlled by the top five Chinese banks. The Asia-Middle East corridor has emerged in response to the ambitious Saudi effort to curb the kingdom's reliance on oil. The $2 trillion that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman may end up spending toward this goal will spur demand for everything from physical infrastructure to artificial intelligence software and data centers. Dubai, meanwhile, is getting readying for a flying taxi service.The picks and shovels for the gold rush will come from Asian firms. They will increasingly tap their home-country banks, or a regional lender like Singapore's DBS Group Holdings Ltd., for working capital. The European trade-finance specialists may have to work hard to hold on to their sway.

Indian Deposits In Swiss Banks Dropped 18% Over Last 10 Years: Data

New Delhi: Deposits of Indian customers in Swiss banks have declined by around 18 per cent over the past decade, according to the latest figures released by the Swiss National Bank (SNB). The data highlighted a drop from approximately 425 million Swiss francs in 2015 to 346 million Swiss francs in 2024. The SNB data also showed that Indian deposits had seen a sharp rise during the COVID-19 period, touching a 10-year high of around 602 million Swiss francs. However, the deposits started declining after the pandemic peak. In 2023, deposits stood at 309 million Swiss francs, but in 2024, it grows by 37 million Swiss francs to reach 346 million Swiss francs. Despite this annual rise, the overall trend over the last decade remains downward. However, the decline in deposits is not unique to India. Several other major economies also witnessed a reduction in funds deposit in Swiss banks by their nationals. For instance, deposits by UK nationals fell from 44 billion Swiss francs in 2015 to 31 billion Swiss francs in 2024. Chinese deposits also saw a decline, reducing from 5.01 billion Swiss francs to 4.3 billion Swiss francs over the same period. The neighbouring countries of India Pakistan and Bangladesh also saw decline, deposits held by Pakistani nationals in Swiss banks have witnessed a steep decline over the last ten years. According to the data deposits by Pakistanis stood at 947 million Swiss francs in 2015 but have dropped significantly to 241 million Swiss francs by 2024, a fall of nearly 75 per cent. A similar trend was observed in the case of Bangladeshi nationals. Their deposits in Swiss banks declined from 48 million Swiss francs in 2015 to just 12.6 million Swiss francs in 2024, marking a drop of over 73 per cent. The decline reflects a reducing trend of foreign deposits in Swiss banks it can be due to various reasons like tightening regulations, increased scrutiny, and changes in international financial transparency norms. Saudi Arabian deposits nearly halved during the 10-year period, from 8.3 billion Swiss francs in 2015 to 4.8 billion Swiss francs in 2024. The most significant drop was seen in deposits by American nationals. Their deposits in Swiss banks dropped steeply from 64.2 billion Swiss francs in 2015 to 24.4 billion Swiss francs in 2024, a decline of about 62 per cent. The data highlighted a broader trend of declining foreign deposits in Swiss banks, possibly reflecting greater transparency, international regulations, and shifts in global financial preferences. For India, the trend clearly shows that over the last decade deposits by Indian nationals in Swiss banks have declined. Though, a temporary hike in deposits was seen during the pandemic in 2021.

Indian money parked in Swiss banks more than tripled in 2024, rising to 3.5 billion Swiss francs (CHF)—approximately Rs 37,600 crore—according to the Swiss National Bank (SNB). This sharp rise is largely attributed to a surge in funds routed through local branches and other financial institutions. It marks the highest level since 2021, when Indian-linked funds had touched a 14-year high of CHF 3.83 billion. While the overall amount rose significantly, money parked directly in customer accounts grew by only 11%, accounting for just one-tenth of the total. The rebound comes after a steep 70% decline in 2023, which saw Indian funds fall to a four-year low of CHF 1.04 billion. According to SNB data, Indian clients' total funds of CHF 3,545.54 million are spread across various financial channels. Of this, CHF 3.02 billion was held through other banks, CHF 346 million in customer deposit accounts, CHF 41 million through fiduciaries or trusts, and CHF 135 million in bonds and securities. This increase propelled India to the 48th rank in terms of foreign client deposits in Swiss banks, up from 67th in 2023, though still slightly below its 46th rank in 2022. Is All This Black Money? Why Do the Wealthy Still Prefer Swiss Banks? Swiss banks continue to attract high-net-worth individuals globally for reasons beyond secrecy. They offer safety during political or economic instability and access to exclusive investment opportunities. A Swiss account often serves as a ticket to elite investment pools with high entry barriers. Additionally, Switzerland's trust laws are among the most sophisticated globally, helping wealthy families pool and protect their assets through offshore structures. The Swiss franc's stability also shields wealth from currency volatility. Swiss authorities have reinforced that Indian-held assets should not be automatically treated as black money, stating that Switzerland actively supports India in its fight against tax fraud and evasion. India-Switzerland Information Sharing in Place Since 2018, India has been receiving annual account information from Switzerland under the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) framework. The first data exchange occurred in September 2019, and continues regularly, covering accounts with suspected links to financial irregularities. Swiss officials noted that hundreds of such information exchanges have taken place to date. Global Context and Regional Trends While Indian-linked funds rose sharply, total foreign client money in Swiss banks slightly declined to CHF 977 billion in 2024, down from CHF 983 billion in 2023. Indian clients held CHF 1.59 billion at the end of 2023, a 9% year-on-year increase. Among neighbouring countries, Pakistan's deposits declined to CHF 272 million, while Bangladesh saw a steep rise to CHF 589 million. Similar to India, conversations around black money in Swiss accounts remain politically sensitive in both countries.

So, last 16 years have been more than satisfactory for Indian investors and for Indian markets, how are the next three years looking? Madhu Kela: But that is the whole point that, are people who have truly believed in the longer range of India are the ones who have actually been able to do well and they have always taken advantage of any market mispricing or any market significant decline. So, over the next, I am sure three years will also be good, but I am very bullish from a next 10-20-year perspective also on India, things are really-really falling in place. If you look at every macro parameter and since the time I have been around this is the lowest bond spread we have seen between America and India and maybe in last 30 years. Is that not telling us something that the bond spread between 10-year bond yield of America and India are less than 1.5%. So, I feel now more and more people are actually recognising the India story and more and more money will come and I am so happy that finally the retail public is participating as they are actually benefiting, at least post covid. So, three years will be good. But let me tell you that good means what? Let us bifurcate the whole market first. So, we have roughly $5 trillion, 48% of the market is owned by founders, roughly 25-27% is owned by domestic institution, roughly 16-17% is owned by foreign institutional investors and balance is owned by real public. In this entire market cap, there are 580 companies which are above $1 billion market cap. But out of these 580 companies, roughly one-third and these are rough number, roughly one-third are trading at more than 50 PE multiple on a trailing basis. So, a balanced market is where I find a lot of attractiveness. So, when we say India will do well, if you just invest in Nifty, this is what has happened in the last three years you still made like 14-15% cagr. So, you will continue to hopefully get that 12% to 15% return if you invest in Nifty and if you just stick to really largecap. Where people like me see an opportunity is on the select sectors, select stocks, and mispricing in the market which happens from time to time. So, when we last visited your channel, I remember January to March and there was literally a lot of panic. So, if you buy India in that time and if you buy a stock specific that is the alpha which is left in the market. So, I will continue to believe that only. Essentially focus on bottom-up ideas, segregate your time of doing research and time of execution. I repeat, again segregate your time of doing research and time of execution very clearly. It is not that I come up with an idea today, so I have to buy it tomorrow. Markets are volatile, something or the other will keep happening. The last six-nine months have been so eventful whether it is Trump, tariff, global war, oil prices. Now again, today people are talking about Iran and Israel. These things will come and go. But if you keep your homework ready and if you are a really good stock picker and stock investor, these volatility gives you time and opportunity to invest and that to my opinion really creates that extra alpha which people like me are looking at. But you think that time is going to come sometime during this year because with all the geopolitical tensions and all that is happening around the world, the market has actually quite resilient. In fact for the last 28 days, it has just been range bound, we have done nothing at all at an index level. Madhu Kela: I would say even though market has been there, look at for instance what has happened to NBFC sector, look at the returns that the sector has given in the last three-four months even in a stable market. Markets have not gone anywhere. In fact, Nifty is only up 6% in last one year. Smallcap is down. Midcap is only up 4% in last one year. But you look at select stories. Even within the NBFC sector, there are something is up 30%, something is up 50%, something is up even 100% in this overall sector. So, that is precisely what I am saying. If we think markets are going to be in a range bound, that is the best time to do stock picking. So, we have got a list of multibaggers and the headline of this graphic is multibagger stocks not one but many which Madhusudan Kela over his careers has identified. Some of them have been 10x, 20x, 50x, even 100x. It starts with a legendary investment of yours, JSPL, Inox group of companies, Radico Khaitan, many more. But the last part we have kept it blank which is that which are the next new themes or ideas Madhusudan Kela is waiting on and we will call this as Madhusudan Kela's birthday gift to our viewers. Madhu Kela: So, I do not have all of these multibaggers, we do not know which one will be 10x and which one will be 100x when we make the investment. It is only a period of time when we start tracking these companies and they deliver, we develop more and more conviction. So, let us say Gujarat Fluoro for instance, I bought the stock maybe at Rs 400-500 five-six years back. At that time I did not know that it is going to be 10x, but I was sure that this company will do well. So, I feel it is not that it is lot of return is being made, so there will be no multibaggers in times to come. You see forget Indian market, even American markets have delivered so many multibaggers in the last four years. So, markets will always keep giving that opportunity. Today clearly, I see that opportunity, I do not know whether it will be 5x or 10x, but I remain very positive on select NBFC companies because the overall regulatory framework for the NBFC sector has dramatically improved in the last three-four months. The rate cut has boosted, their liquidity availability in the market because deposits going down, suddenly we see there is lot of liquidity available for these companies and lot of these companies have tightened their belt significantly in the last three-four years in the very tight regulatory regime. So, this is maybe just the beginning for this sector which has not done too much maybe in the last three-four years.
