Why Kate Middleton didn't attend Royal Ascot: The real reason behind her last-minute withdrawal
Kate Middleton's name appeared on the official list of attendees for Royal Ascot this week, sparking excitement about her return.
However, just 20 minutes later, it was confirmed that the Princess of Wales would not be attending.
The initial listing showed that Princess Kate was due to ride in the carriage procession with Prince William. PEOPLE understands that an incorrect version of the guest list was issued by mistake before the correct one was published. Prince William was later seen riding in the first carriage alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Prince Saud bin Khalid Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia.
Sources close to the Princess say she was disappointed not to be able to attend the event. As she continues her recovery from cancer, she is said to be carefully balancing her public duties.
'There was a miscommunication behind the scenes,' one insider noted.
Kate announced in March 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. She stepped back from public life for much of the year. In January, she shared that she was in remission and has since made a gradual return to royal engagements.
According to Queen Elizabeth's former spokeswoman Ailsa Anderson, Kate is focusing on her health and family as she slowly resumes royal duties.
'She's being sensible, listening to what her body is telling her and easing back into public life,' Anderson told PEOPLE.
Kate's mother, Carole Middleton, did attend Royal Ascot on Wednesday, along with Alizée Thévenet, the wife of Kate's brother, James Middleton. Carole was seen speaking with both Prince William and King Charles during the event.
Those close to the Princess continue to emphasise that she is taking her time and putting her well-being, and that of her children, first.
However, many people on the internet also criticised the Princess for using the 'cancer card' at the last moment.

Bride hears late son's heartbeat in boy he saved before walking down aisle
An American bride met the young boy who received her late son's heart in an emotional moment on her wedding day last month. Kaci Wilson met the 7-year-old transplant recipient for the first time on her big day - two years after the death of her son, according to a report in People magazine. 'It was a very, very, very sweet moment,' Wilson, 24, told People. On April 18, 2023, one of Kaci Wilson's three sons died in a road accident. Wilson was driving her Kia Carnival with her 4-year-old twins and 1-year-old baby when a truck hit the vehicle. The accident occurred in North Carolina. One of her twins, Myles Godfrey, suffered a traumatic brain injury in the accident and died. His organs were donated and helped save the lives of several other people - including 7-year-old Saleh Ahmad, who received his heart. For Kaci Wilson, it was an emotional day when she first met Saleh before walking down the aisle. According to People, the boy's parents asked her if she wanted to hear his heartbeat. They even brought a stethoscope. 'It was just so heartwarming,' Wilson says. 'It definitely was the closest I felt to him since the accident.' Wilson had never met Saleh face-to-face before. They had talked on the phone and Wilson invited the Ahmad family to her wedding in Hiawassee, Georgia. 'The little boy was crying happy tears. He was smiling, he was giving all the hugs and kisses,' Wilson says. 'We were sad, but we were happy, seeing how well the little boy is doing.' The 24-year-old newlywed hopes her story will inspire people who struggle with the thought of organ donation. 'In that moment, you're feeling all the emotions of 'How is this happening to my family? It's not fair. We can't save our kid, but we're going to save somebody else's,' ' she says. But Wilson says she eventually realised her son would have wanted to help people. "He was the most kind-hearted, sweet, loving, little boy. So of course he would want to save somebody else if he could.'

Did Miley Cyrus Shade Ex-Husband Liam Hemsworth? Subtle Nudge to Fan With Same Name Creates Buzz
Miley Cyrus is once again making headlines, this time for a subtle message that many fans believe was aimed at her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. During a recent meet and greet, a fan named Liam asked Cyrus to sign his vinyl copy of her new album, Something Beautiful. The pop star responded with a personal note: 'The best Liam.' The message was shared online by the fan, who posted a photo of the signed vinyl to X (formerly Twitter) on June 4. The writing, in black cursive on the album sleeve, caught fans' attention almost immediately. Given that the fan shares the same first name as the Hunger Games actor, many interpreted it as a light jab at Hemsworth, whom Cyrus was married to for two years before finalizing their divorce in 2020. The fan added to the humor by posting a photo of himself with Cyrus at the event. In the picture, both are smiling widely with the signed vinyl placed on the table between them. He captioned it, 'Me when I'm the best Liam,' leaning into the subtle shade that fans are now discussing across social media. Miley Cyrus has largely kept her split from Liam Hemsworth private in recent years, but she hasn't shied away from referencing the emotional challenges she faced during that time. Just last month, while previewing Something Beautiful for fans in New York, she reflected on a turning point in their relationship. 'When my house burned down,' she said on May 6, as reported by PEOPLE, 'a lot of my relationships also burned down.' The couple's Malibu home was destroyed in the November 2018 California wildfires, and Cyrus has since described the incident as a major shift in her life. The singer shared that while it was a painful time, it ultimately pushed her toward healing and growth. 'I think what I would have told my younger self is to appreciate those darker times,' she added. 'Because, like I said, they are only leading you into the light.' Cyrus has since moved on both personally and professionally. She is currently dating musician Maxx Morando and continues to explore her music with her latest project, Something Beautiful. The album touches on personal themes of love, loss, and self-discovery.
