‘Slim, healthy' drug mules flying in on student visas: Cops
Vasai: "Slim and healthy" foreign nationals, especially from African countries Nigeria, Cameroon and Guinea, are being sent to India on student and tourist visas as drug mules, a police investigation has found.
Only healthy ones make the cut because they have to swallow up to 35 capsules of cocaine in one go, said a source from Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar police's (MBVV) crime branch.
The source said the drug mules are put on 20-hour flights and forbidden from eating or drinking anything to prevent chances of the cocaine capsules rupturing in the body. After landing and successfully clearing customs, they rent a lodge and purge the capsules, from which the cocaine is retrieved and distributed through multiple ways, including being concealed in shoes and other objects and sent via courier services, said the source.
"We have come across evidence that drug mules are being sent to India on student and tourist visas," said Madan Ballal, ACP, crime branch, MBVV police.
The crime branch unearthed the drug traffickers' modus operandi after its unit-1 seized cocaine worth Rs 22 crore from a Mira Road resident's house in April. The interrogation of the suspect, Sabina Shaik (42), led police to a Nigerian national, Andy Ubabudike Onyinse (45), also from Mira Road, who was caught with around 2kg of cocaine.

Tarn Taran cops crack 3 extortion cases
1 2 Tarn Taran: In a major crackdown on escalating extortion threats in the region, the Tarn Taran Police have claimed significant progress by solving three high-profile ransom call cases. The operation has led to arrests and critical investigative breakthroughs against criminal networks operating both locally and from abroad. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Deepak Pareek said on Sunday that the police launched a targeted campaign to curb anti-social activities and dismantle extortion rackets. Cases were registered at Jhabal and Bhikhiwind police stations, involving threatening phone calls made to innocent residents, demanding large sums of money under the guise of gangster intimidation. In the first case, two individuals, Nishan Singh of Jagatpura and Gursewak Singh alias Saba of Mahindipur, were arrested for extortion and criminal intimidation. The complainant, a farmer from Jagatpura, had reclaimed 4.25 acres of land previously leased to his uncle, Nishan Singh, sparking a dispute. On June 5 and 6, he received threatening WhatsApp calls from a UK number demanding money and threatening his life. Investigations revealed that Gursewak Singh made the calls under Nishan Singh's instructions. Both were arrested, and inquiries confirmed their involvement in targeting and threatening innocent people for extortion. In the second case, an FIR was registered against Mandeep Singh, a native of Valtoha currently residing in Dubai. On June 8, a farmer from Bhagwanpur Suga received a WhatsApp call demanding Rs 35 lakh, followed by repeated threats until June 14. Investigations identified Mandeep as the caller, who has connections in the complainant's village. He has been named in the FIR, and legal proceedings, including the issuance of a look-out circular (LOC), are under way. Police are also probing his possible gang affiliations and assets acquired through extortion. In the third case, an FIR was registered against Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi alias Panchi, a resident of Ferozepur currently living in Dubai. On June 6, a resident of Bhikhiwind received threatening WhatsApp calls from international numbers demanding Rs 20 lakh and threatening harm to his family. The calls continued until June 16. Investigations revealed Gurpreet as the caller, who falsely claimed to be a gangster to extort money. He has been living in Dubai for the past eight years and last visited Punjab about 2.5 years ago. An LOC has been issued, and inquiry into his gang links and financial assets is ongoing. "All three cases are under investigation," SSP Pareek said. "We are committed to tracing gang connections, following financial trails, and identifying any additional associates involved."
