Maharatna SAIL supplied entire requirement of special steel for newly commissioned INS Arnala
New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The requirement of special steel for India Navy's ship INS Arnala was wholly supplied by Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), taking a step forward towards the country's self-reliance in the defence sector and import substitution, the Ministry of Steel said in an official statement on Thursday.
'SAIL supplied the entire requirement of special steel for India's first indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), 'INS Arnala', which was commissioned into the Indian Navy on June 18, 2025,' the ministry's statement read.
The Maharatna PSU also catered to the entire requirement of special steel for the other seven ASW-SWC corvettes being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).
'Partnering India's march towards defence indigenisation, SAIL has supplied the entire special steel for this project. This marks yet another impressive milestone in SAIL's journey to support India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative and help the nation lessen its import dependency,' the statement added.
The Steel ministry also highlighted that SAIL has supplied the special steel for building the Navy's ships before too, including for INS Vikrant, INS Vindyagiri, INS Nilgiri, INS Surat, among other notable projects.
On Wednesday, India's first indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), INS Arnala, was commissioned at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan presiding over the ceremony.
'INS Arnala - the pioneering Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft - proudly joins the Indian Navy today, 18 June 2025, at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam,' the Indian Navy said in a statement earlier.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, and delivered on May 8 at L&T Shipyard in Kattupalli under a Public-Private Partnership, INS Arnala is the first in a series of eight ASW-SWCs being developed to enhance India's coastal defence, a prior statement from the Minister of Defence said.
The 77-metre-long vessel, named after the historic Arnala fort off Vasai, Maharashtra, is equipped with advanced underwater surveillance systems, mine-laying capabilities, and is designed for operations in shallow waters. It is the largest Indian Naval warship propelled by a diesel engine-waterjet combination.
According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the ship has been designed for underwater surveillance, search and rescue operations, and Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO).
Notably, INS Arnala was delivered to the Navy during Operation Sindoor, when tensions were heightened, which in turn demonstrates the Navy's operational readiness and indigenous production capacity. (ANI)

HD Kumaraswamy practises yoga at Salem Steel Plant
Salem (TN), June 21 (UNI) Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, HD Kumaraswamy, participated in the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations held at the Salem Steel Plant. The Minister joined factory staff, their family members, senior officials, members of the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), and top officials from the Ministry of Steel in performing yoga. Under the guidance of yoga instructors, the Minister performed some key and simple asanas and pranayama at the Hill View Sports Ground located in Salem Township. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Kumaraswamy said, 'Yoga has been a way of life in India since ancient times. A practice once limited to India was brought onto the global stage by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he took office eleven years ago. As a result, June 21 is now observed as International Yoga Day across the world. Full credit for this achievement goes to Prime Minister Modi.' 'I am very happy to have had the opportunity to participate in the Yoga Day celebration alongside the staff, officers, and their families at the Salem Steel Plant. It was a moment of joy and privilege to experience the uniqueness of yoga with the backbone of our nation—the steel community,' the Minister added. HD Kumaraswamy reviews operations at Salem Steel Plant, calls for focus on profitability and capacity
Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries , HD Kumaraswamy , visited the Salem Steel Plant , a unit of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), where he reviewed its operations and discussed ways to enhance profitability and capacity utilisation. Kumaraswamy was received by the district administration and plant officials. He was accorded a Guard of Honour and planted a sapling on the premises, marking the visit's focus on sustainable practices. 'Steel is not just a material, it is the backbone of national development. From infrastructure to innovation, our goal is growth with responsibility,' he said during the visit. The visit aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's national vision of increasing India's steel production capacity to 300 million tonnes by 2030, achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070, and supporting the broader goal of building a developed India by 2047. Steelmaking process Kumaraswamy toured several units in the plant, observing the production cycle from scrap processing to slab casting. He visited the scrapyard, Steel Melting Shop , Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) , and slab caster , and observed operations involving the torch cutting machine and cold rolling mill. 'The level of technological sophistication and discipline I've seen here is commendable. This plant reflects the true spirit of Make in India,' the Minister stated. The EAF-based production process at Salem is part of a cleaner steelmaking approach aimed at reducing emissions in line with India's climate targets. Discussions on strategic upgrades and speciality steel The Minister also reviewed the plant's output of stainless steel products, including pipes, railway wagons, submersible pump components, coin blanks, and domestic LPG cylinder sheets. These are used across various sectors such as infrastructure, railways, defence, and energy. 'The finished products emerging from this plant touch millions of lives every day from homes to industries,' Kumaraswamy said. In a review meeting attended by the Chairman and Managing Director of SAIL, Joint Secretary (Steel), and the Executive Director of the Salem Plant, the Minister discussed plans to enhance the plant's focus on speciality steel. These products are used in applications such as defence, railways, aerospace, and engineering. 'We are committed to revitalising this strategic asset. Speciality steel is the future, and Salem Steel Plant can become more cost-efficient by using renewable energy including solar and wind. There should be full capacity utilisation and deciding on the final product mix,' he added. The Minister also met with labour union representatives and assured them of action on their concerns.
