Billy Joel attempted suicide twice in his early 20s.
The 76-year-old singer "felt like a homewrecker" after he had an affair with Elizabeth Weber while living with her, her husband Jon Small - who Billy was in a band called Attila with - and their son and when the truth emerged, the Piano Man hitmaker embarked on a downward spiral.
In new documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, People magazine reports Elizabeth - who later reconnected with the singer and they were married from 1973-1982 - said: "Bill and I spent a lot of time together. [It was a] slow build."
Billy confessed to Jon that he was "in love" with Elizabeth.
He added: "I felt very, very guilty about it. They had a child. I felt like a homewrecker. I was just in love with a woman and I got punched in the nose which I deserved. Jon was very upset. I was very upset."
Their fight ended Attila and the friendship between the two men, Elizabeth left and Billy started drinking.
He reflected in the film: 'I had no place to live. I was sleeping in laundromats and I was depressed I think to the point of almost being psychotic.
"So I figured, 'That's it. I don't want to live anymore.' I was just in a lot of pain and it was sort of like why hang out, tomorrow is going to be just like today is and today sucks. So, I just thought I'd end it all."
At the time, the Uptown Girl singer's sister, Judy Molinari, was working as a medical assistant and had passed on sleeping pills to help her brother to rest.
She tearfully said: 'But Billy decided that he was going to take all of them… he was in a coma for days and days and days.
"I went to go see him in the hospital, and he was laying there white as a sheet. I thought that I'd killed him."
Billy noted he was "very selfish" at the time and recalled eventually waking up in hospital thinking he wanted to make another attempt on his life, but this time to do it "right".
Judy told how he drank a bottle of "lemon Pledge" and Jon took him back to hospital.
Billy reflected: 'Even though our friendship was blowing up, Jon saved my life."
Jon added: "He never really said anything to me, the only practical answer I can give as to why Billy took it so hard was because he loved me that much and that it killed him to hurt me that much. Eventually I forgave him."
Following his second suicide attempt, the "lost soul" checked himself into an "observation ward" and the few weeks he spent there had a huge impact on Billy.
He said: "I got out of the observation ward and I thought to myself, you can utilise all those emotions to channel that stuff into music."

The former One Tree Hill star told how Jeffrey had been given a few days off from filming so the family "could go say goodbye to his dad" shortly before he passed away last July following a brief illness. She added: "It really was a family affair. Everyone knew that he was dealing with this tragedy, but these storylines had been written well in advance. We had no idea when we got the news that his dad was sick that we would have to film this scene within days of seeing him for the last time. And we definitely had no idea this episode was going to air on Father's Day. It was a lot. "I wish people knew what was going on behind the scenes when they see someone's work. "Anybody who's in this line of work is usually tapping into something hard. The thing he was tapping into was really hard, but also very fresh. Working when you're raw like that is a special skill set." The couple's children, Gus, 15, and George, seven, joined them on set of TWD: Dead City and Hilarie praised the teenager in particular for the support he offered his dad. She said: "Our kids were there with us and in his trailer hanging out, so he could just be silly with them in between every take. "Even when I wrapped, our son stayed with him at work and just shadowed the director and got to hang out with the camera crew. And so the balm that eases loss like that is being surrounded by the people who are still here and that we get to love on. Our son stepping up and being there for his dad at work was also a very cool turn of events."

Cher's son has been released from hospital. Elijah Blue Allman - whose father is the late Gregg Allman - was taken to a California medical facility on 14 June after "acting erratically" amid reports of a drugs overdose, but TMZ have confirmed he returned home "midweek" and is continuing to recover. According to the outlet, Cher's "only concern" is for her 48-year-old offspring's wellbeing and the 79-year-old singer is doing everything she can to get him the help he needs. Police previously explained the Deadsy rocker was "transported to the hospital" after cops were called to his house, and "deputies located drugs inside the home". Following Elijah's hospitalisation, his estranged wife, Marieangela King Allman, shared her "steadfast" support amid his "personal challenges". She told People magazine: 'While it is true that Elijah has faced personal challenges in the past, one constant has been his unwavering commitment to sobriety and his loyalty to those he loves. "Like many, he continues to confront his inner struggles — but it is important to recognise that he does so from a place of strength, not defeat. "Despite the assumptions that often colour how his journey is portrayed, the reality is that Elijah remains grounded, focused and deeply committed to living with integrity and purpose. "I want to state, without hesitation, that I will always root for him. My support is steadfast and comes from a place of deep respect for the person he is and the resilience he continues to show." In recent years, the Believe hitmaker sought to put Elijah under a conservatorship, but decided to drop the case towards the end of last year after they came to an agreement. Court documents revealed the development months after Cher's request for conservatorship over her son was denied by a judge in Los Angeles. At the time, the singer had filed an emergency request for Elijah to be placed under a temporary emergency conservatorship – claiming she 'feared that her son would not be alive within the year'. Cher's lawyers cited his treatment for schizoaffective disorder and revealed that in the past year he has been placed in several 5150s – a California legal code which allows a person with a mental illness to be involuntarily detained for a 72-hour psychiatric hospitalisation. A judge ruled against the proposal as Elijah proved he had 'managed his finances', has an apartment and 'remained drug free' after submitting 'several drug tests' during the proceedings. The judge also ruled there was not 'sufficient evidence' to agree to the temporary conservatorship, as much of what the mum and son were arguing was based on 'fears' and hypotheticals. Elijah previously revealed that he started using drugs when he was just 11 years old and came close to overdosing several times. In 2014, he told Entertainment Tonight: "I did have some close calls and some moments of really feeling at the edge of mortality ... I always kind of kept it a little bit safe but you never can do that."
