First heat wave of the season could break records in York
After cool and rainy days in southcentral Pennsylvania, summer will kick off with a heat wave.
Temperatures are expected to rise into the 90s, starting this weekend, and remain high through at least the middle of next week.
It will mark the first heat wave of the season, and the first time the mercury has reached 90 degrees this year, National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Dangelo said.
The heat could break records in York on Sunday and Monday, AccuWeather.com senior meteorologist Adam Douty said.
The temperature on Sunday is expected to reach 97 degrees, and the record is 98 degrees set in 1988, he said. On Monday, a high of 98 degrees is predicted, which could break the record of 96 degrees set in 1943.
With the humidity and the high temperatures, it could feel like 105 degrees, Douty said.
The National Weather Service predicts the first 90-degree day will be on Sunday, with a high of 93 degrees, while AccuWeather.com expects the mercury to reach 91 degrees on Saturday.
Both the weather service and AccuWeather.com predict that temperatures will remain in the 90s for days. AccuWeather.com forecasts the hot weather could last into the following weekend.
A big ridge of high pressure will sit over the area, bringing the hot and dry weather, Douty said.
It'll be a big switch from the cloudy, rainy and cool weather the area has experienced recently. Meteorologists are advising the public to take precautions to stay healthy.
"It'll be steamy and hot," Dangelo said.
Heat waves can make people ill as their bodies try to regulate their temperature, and steps can be taken to help prevent an emergency, according to the National Weather Service. Heat strokes require immediate medical attention.
The weather service offers these tips for helping to stay cool during a heat wave:
Drink plenty of fluids, including water, and avoid alcoholic beverages.
Plan strenuous activities during the coolest times of the day, such as in the morning or the evening.
Wear lightweight, loose fitting, and light-colored clothing to help stay cool.
Eat light meals, such as salads and fruit, that are easier to digest.
Turn on the air conditioner or go some place that offers A/C, such as a mall or the library.
Use a portable fan to remove heat from a room or to pull in cooler air.
Take cool baths or showers.
Keep children, people with disabilities, the elderly, pets and others safe during extreme temperatures.

Extreme Heat Warning in effect from Sunday through Wednesday for the Pittsburgh area
After a few scattered showers and storms Friday evening, conditions begin dry with mostly cloudy skies across Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia. A thunderstorm complex moving around the periphery of our developing heat ridge will likely bypass us to the northeast today, with a low chance of a shower or storm northeast of Pittsburgh up to the I-80 corridor. The rest of our area should see mostly cloudy skies this morning with decreasing clouds and temperatures heating up by late afternoon with highs in the upper 80s. High temperatures and rain chances on Saturday in Western Pennsylvania KDKA Weather Center Our first bout of excessive heat of the summer builds in starting Sunday as a strong ridge of high pressure aloft in the atmosphere, a.k.a. a "heat dome," shifts from the Central US to the Eastern US. Dangerous, potentially record breaking, heat building in
Welcome to the weekend! Heat is building in and will be reaching potentially dangerous and record-breaking levels starting on Sunday. The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has issued a string of Alert Days for the extreme heat starting Sunday into the middle of the upcoming week. Saturday, however, will still be hot but not as much as we'll see starting Sunday. High temperatures will reach the low to mid-90s. Feels like temperatures peak in the mid to upper 90s this afternoon. The second day of AFRAM will be the first of a string of Alert Days. High temperatures peak closer to 100° for the first time this year. This will be very similar to what we felt during AFRAM last year. When you factor in the humidity, it'll feel like the low to mid-100s. Monday and Tuesday look to be slightly hotter (and most likely the worst days of the stretch). Wednesday will be a couple of degrees 'cooler' - back into the upper 90s but the high humidity will push the feels like temperature/heat index over 100° again. The heat wave will continue into the late week as highs continue to surpass 90° Thursday and Friday. Storm chances return later this week and that could provide some slight relief.
