The fate of ad-hoc committee led by Mohanlal at AMMA will be decided at the AGM on Sunday. The committee was formed after the Hema Committee report on poor conditions for women.
Ad-hoc committee under Mohanlal likely to continue at AMMA Kochi, June 21 (IANS) The fate of the ad-hoc committee led by superstar Mohanlal at the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) will be decided today during the association's annual general body meeting (AGM) here.
The ad-hoc panel was constituted last year after the Malayalam film industry was rocked by controversies following the release of the Hema Committee report, which exposed the appalling conditions faced by women in the industry. The situation worsened when several women artistes — mostly those in minor roles — came forward with allegations of sexual exploitation by prominent actors. Amid mounting media attention and public outrage, popular actor Siddique, who had recently taken over as general secretary, resigned after being accused by a woman artiste.
As more names surfaced, Mohanlal and the entire elected committee stepped down under pressure. Subsequently, to manage the affairs of the over 500-member strong AMMA, the same committee was reconstituted as an ad-hoc body with Mohanlal at the helm. However, actor Unni Mukundan, the treasurer, later expressed his intention to resign from the interim setup.
Speaking to IANS on condition of anonymity, a leading actor said the AGM will deliberate on the way forward, especially after taking legal advice. 'Legal experts have already been consulted. At Sunday's meeting, these aspects will be presented, and a final decision will be taken accordingly," the actor said. 'If the ad-hoc committee is retained, replacements will be needed for Siddique and Mukundan. The current joint secretary, Baburaj, could be promoted to general secretary — something that has precedence in other associations. However, the final call rests with the AGM," the actor added.
With AMMA's AGM generally witnessing strong participation, Sunday's meeting is expected to be a packed and potentially decisive affair.

The actor shared the exciting news on Saturday through a video posted on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). The Classic Criminal is back!" Another commented, "Next industry hit loading." 'Drishyam' chronicles the struggle of Georgekutty, played by Mohanlal, and his family, who come under suspicion when the son of the Inspector General of Police is killed. The first part was released in 2013, while the second part came out in 2021. The success of Drishyam led to its remake in several languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. In Hindi, Ajay Devgn headlined the franchise. Meanwhile, Mohanlal was last seen in L2: Empuraan, which hit theatres on March 27. He acted alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran, who also directed the film.

‘Maharaj' director backs 8-hour shift: ‘Rani, Kajol did it long before it became debate'

Mumbai: As conversations around work-life balance and shooting hours gain momentum in the film industry, filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra has weighed in on the ongoing 8-hour shift debate. Reflecting on his own experiences, he recalled how actors like Rani Mukerji and Kajol have been following structured, 8-hour workdays long before it became a trending topic. Citing the example of the film 'Hichki,' which was wrapped in just 28 days, Siddharth highlighted the importance of discipline and coordination on set regardless of the shift duration. Speaking to IANS, he said, 'Every film has its own requirement. We shot Hichki with Rani and the kids in 28 days with 8-hour shifts. Everyone—from actors to spot boys—was aligned. Kajol used to do 8-hour shifts even back in 2010. Rani does it too. So what Deepika is saying isn't new. If a director needs a certain actor and they can only give 6 hours a day—so be it. It's about aligning expectations. It's not about ego; it's about efficiency.' For the unversed, the ongoing debate around 8-hour work shifts gained traction after reports emerged about Deepika Padukone's exit from the film 'Spirit.' The actress was initially slated to star opposite Prabhas but reportedly stepped away from the project due to disagreements over certain demands. These included profit-sharing, an eight-hour workday, and other terms that reportedly didn't align with the filmmaker's vision. Following her exit, the makers brought Triptii Dimri on board as the new lead. Speaking about pay disparity in the industry, the 'Maharaj' director acknowledged that while the conversation has been ongoing for years, the landscape is gradually shifting. Pointing to top stars like Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt, Siddharth noted that they are now among the highest-paid actors in the business. According to Siddharth, remuneration in the industry is closely tied to an actor's box office pull. 'The truth is, pay depends on your star power. The first few days of a film rely on the actor's draw. After that, it's the director's job to sustain interest. It's not just about gender—it's about economics. If an actor brings in a strong opening, they deserve that pay. It's business logic.'
