Centre approves 10,000 e-buses for Bengaluru, Delhi, other cities; none for Pune

Pune has not been allotted any e-buses under the PM E-Drive in a recent announcement by the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries. On Friday, Minister H D Kumaraswamy approved the rollout of electric buses under the scheme with Bengaluru being allocated 4,500 buses, Delhi getting 2,800 buses, Hyderabad getting 2,000 buses, Ahmedabad getting 1,000 buses, and Surat getting 600 buses.
Pune has been reeling under a shortage of buses for at least four years. An analysis of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) data by The Indian Express in April showed that the number of buses in the city has remained around the 2,000 figure since at least 2022. In April 2022 PMPML's fleet numbers stood at 1,959, in February 2023 at 2,083, in February 2024 at 2,009, and in February 2025 at 1,916.
A study by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) in January highlighted that Pune had only half the buses it required. According to the institute Pune requires 4,500 buses as compared to the 2,000 it has had over the past few years. Pune Metropolitan Region's Comprehensive Mobility Plan developed by Pune Metro and Assystem paints an even bleaker picture. The plan says that based on Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs guidelines of 60 buses per lakh population, PMPML required 6,228 by 2024. This means that the city is 4,000 buses short.
Responding to a question about Pune not being allotted buses, Pune MP and Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol on Monday said, 'After the state government's proposal goes to the Ministry only then the buses can be approved. There is a system in place, the state government has to send the proposal. We have discussed this with CM Devendra Fadnavis.'
In October 2024, Muralidhar Mohol had announced that a proposal to get 1,000 buses for Pune had been submitted to Kumaraswamy. He wrote on his official X account, 'While the metro network is expanding in Pune city, we are focusing on empowering PMPML and have submitted a proposal to the Union Minister of Heavy Industries, Hon. Shri. HD Kumaraswamy Ji, to get 1,000 new e-buses for PMPML through the Modi government. Moreover, regarding this proposal, the current number of buses in Pune city, its requirement and future requirement were discussed. On this, Hon. Minister has also directed the officials to take action and process his proposal.'
Nitin Narvekar, Joint Managing Director of PMPML told The Indian Express, 'Our proposal for 1000 e-buses has already gone to the authorities. However, I was not aware of this recent allocation (to other cities) and we have not received any intimation or any timeline regarding the delivery of our buses.'

Govt forms committee to submit proposals for e-buses

Vijayawada: State govt has formed a state level steering committee (SLSC) for the submission of proposals to the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) for the procurement of electric buses under the 'PM e-Bus Sewa' scheme. The Centre sanctioned 750 electric buses to Andhra Pradesh under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme. Chief secretary K Vijaynand issued a govt order RT No 310 to this effect, forming the SLBC on Thursday. According to the GO, the SLBC will be headed by the chief secretary as the chairman, with the special chief secretary (energy), principal secretaries of transport, roads and buildings, finance, municipal administration and urban development, and industries & commerce departments, along with the commissioner of the public transport department as the committee members. The ministry of housing & urban affairs (MoHUA) sanctioned 750 e-buses to AP to be operated in 12 locations across 11 cities. Pinnacle Mobility Solutions Pvt Ltd, Pune, along with the discovered GCC prices, is finalised as the agency for the induction of 750 e-buses in the state. The requisition for the procurement of the e-buses should be submitted to MoHUA under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme through the SLSC under the chairmanship of the chief secretary, the GO read.

Minister directs DC to allot Pumpwell bus stand land to KSRTC to operate electric city buses

Dakshina Kannada district in charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Saturday, June 21, directed the district administration to handover seven acres of land at Pumpwell to Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to enable it to operate electric buses on city routes. In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, the Minister said the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) had acquired the land to build a satellite bus terminal in the city. Now the central government has sanctioned 100 e-buses to KSRTC's Mangaluru Division under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, the land may be handed over to KSRTC free of cost, the Minister said. Mr. Rao also directed the Deputy Commissioner to hand over 9.9 acres of land belonging to the gram panchayat at Balepuni village near Mudipu, off Mangaluru, free of cost to KSRTC to set up electric bus depot and construct divisional workshop. Eleven cities As many as 11 cities in Karnataka have qualified to introduce electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, according to Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Besides Mangaluru, the cities included Mysuru, Davangere, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Belagavi, Hubballi, Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Ballari, and Vijayapura. The three State-owned transport corporations under whose jurisdiction the cities were located, have submitted a demand for total 795 e-buses under the scheme. While KSRTC had demanded 100 buses for Mysuru and Mangaluru and 50 buses for Davanagere, Shivamogga and Tumakuru, North West KRTC had sought 100 for Belagavi and 110 buses for Hubballi-Dharwad. The Kalyana Karnataka RTC wanted 100 buses for Kalaburagi, 55 for Bellari and 80 buses for Vijayapura. The Central government wanted to boost electric mobility infrastructure in the country through the scheme that envisages deployment of 10,000 electric buses in 169 cities in the country through a Central outlay of ₹20,000 crore under public-private partnership mode. The total estimated cost of the scheme would be ₹57,613 crore. Covering cities with three lakh and more population, the scheme would support bus operations for 10 years.

‘It is clear, the match is fixed': Rahul Gandhi hits out at EC for reducing storage time of poll CCTV footage

After the Election Commission (EC) revised its guidelines on preserving video footage and photographs of elections, reducing the retention period to 45 days, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at the poll panel, saying 'the one from whom the answer was needed is destroying the evidence'. EC sources, however, pointed out that the change aligned the retention period with the timeframe for candidates and electors to file a petition challenging an election – 45 days after the declaration of results. Earlier, the timeframes ranged from three months to one year, depending on the stage of the poll process, as The Indian Express had reported on Friday. Writing on X, Gandhi said: 'It is clear – the match is fixed. And a fixed election is poison for democracy.' The poll panel had revised its earlier guidelines, issued in September 2024, on preserving video footage and photographs of elections — reducing the retention period to 45 days after the declaration of results, after which the data can be destroyed if no election petition (EP) is filed. The EC communicated its decision to the Chief Electoral Officers of all states and Union territories on May 30, citing 'recent misuse' of such material. The Commission underlined that videography and photography of the election process are not mandated by law but are used as an 'internal management tool'. In a post on X, Gandhi, who has been levelling allegations of irregularities in the Maharashtra Assembly elections last year, said: 'Voter list? Will not provide machine-readable format. CCTV footage? It was hidden by changing the law. Photo-video of the election? Now, not in 1 year, we will destroy it in 45 days only.' EC sources said on Saturday that there had been demands to release videos of the poll process and webcasting footage of polling stations. They added that while the demands appeared to be logical, they were in violation of the privacy and security of voters, which is guaranteed by the Representation of the People Act and upheld by court judgments. Releasing the footage would allow for identification of electors by any group or individual, leaving the voters vulnerable to pressure and intimidation, they said. 'Since no election can be challenged beyond 45 days of the declaration of the result, retaining of this footage beyond this period, makes it susceptible to misuse of the content by non-contestants for spreading misinformation and malicious narratives. In case of an EP being filed within 45 days, the CCTV footage is not destroyed and also made available to the competent court when asked for,' as per an EC source. This is the second significant change made by the EC in recent months pertaining to CCTV footage of the election process. In December last year, the government amended Rule 93(2)(a) of the Conduct of Elections Rules to limit public access to such footage. Gandhi's attack on the Election Commission, in a piece in The Indian Express on June 14, reiterated allegations he has made in the past and questioned the Maharashtra Assembly election data which the poll panel has released. In his piece titled 'Match-fixing Maharashtra', Gandhi wrote that 'voter rolls and CCTV footage are tools to be used to strengthen democracy, not ornaments to be locked up'. 'The people of India have a right to be assured that no records have been or will be trashed,' Gandhi wrote. A scrutiny by The Indian Express of his allegations and data around each shows that Gandhi's criticism selectively cites records, ignores crucial context and, in one case, even draws a connection where none exists.
