Scottish film locations featured in One Day, Avengers surge in popularity
Travellers have visited heritage attractions across Scotland in record numbers after the sites featured in major movie productions.
Data compiled by the Moffat Centre at Glasgow Caledonian University and the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions (ASVA) revealed a 3.9 per cent increase in visitors to attractions in 2024, with a total of 49,708,483.
Edinburgh Castle, a prominent backdrop in Netflix 's version of One Day, maintained its position as Scotland 's most frequented paid attraction. Visitor numbers climbed by four per cent to an impressive 1,981,152.
Other historical sites also witnessed significant growth. Culloden Visitor Centre saw a remarkable 42.8 per cent increase in visitors, reaching 374,443, while Stirling Castle experienced a 14.8 per cent rise, welcoming 594,938 visitors, with both attractions charging for admission.
The free admission St Giles' Cathedral, which featured in Avengers: Infinity War, Frankenstein and Fast & Furious 9, saw visitor numbers rise 18.3 per cent increase, to 1,742,147 in 2024.
Chris Greenwood, senior research fellow at the Moffat Centre for Travel and Tourism at Glasgow Caledonian University, said: 'Heritage and culture are a major attraction among our international visitors with castles, heritage centres and historic sites all performing well.
'Many of Scotland's heritage sites are used as filming locations which encourages visitors to undertake 'set-jetting' trips to experience their favourite film and television productions, such as Outlander.
'Growth in free attractions demonstrates the ongoing cost-consciousness among domestic visitors.
'Domestic audiences have been increasingly looking for free attractions and activities, shorter lengths of breaks and things closer to home.'
The National Museum of Scotland remained the number one free attraction with numbers increasing 5.9 per cent to 2,314,974.
Among other free attractions The Burrell Collection in Glasgow recorded 555,888 visits, an increase of 11.6 per cent, while the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh saw an 8.9 per cent increase to 1,999,196.
Michael Golding, chief executive of the ASVA, said: 'The success of Scottish attractions is underpinned by a resolute commitment to providing high-quality experiences that captivate and inspire visitors.
'The continued rise in visitor numbers, particularly at heritage sites and filming locations, highlights the power of authentic and immersive storytelling in attracting visitors.'
The overall number of visitors to paid-for attractions increased 2.4 per cent to 17,849,139.
There were 31,859,344 visits to free attractions in 2024, up 4.8 per cent on the previous year.
Scotland's business minister Richard Lochhead MSP said: 'These figures hammer home the strength and breadth of Scotland's tourism sector.
'I'm pleased that so many of the country's much-loved attractions continue to attract more and more people through their doors.
'This is testament to the dedication of the thousands of people that work hard to create memorable experiences and showcase the best of Scotland's history and culture to people worldwide.
'We will continue to work hand in hand with the sector to continue this upwards trend. In the Scottish Budget, we've allocated an additional £2 million to VisitScotland to help spearhead growth, benefiting attractions and businesses.'

Plot: After an open casting call that sent the nation's parents flying into action, this TV adaptation of novels will star newcomers Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron. Each series will focus on one of the books, starting with the debut story The Philosopher's Stone. Some big names are lined up including John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Nick Frost as Hagrid and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge. It's bound to be magic. The Thursday Murder Club, Netflix Novel: The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman Plot: With an incredible cast, including Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Daniel Mays, David Tennant and Richard E. Grant, this adaptation of the cosy crime thriller has been hugely anticipated. At a lavish country house party, a practical joke appears to have gone horribly, murderously wrong. It will be up to the unlikeliest of sleuths - the inquisitive Lady Eileen 'Bundle' Brent (Mia Mckenna-Bruce) - to unravel a chilling plot that will change her life, cracking wide open the country house mystery. Mia is joined by top British talent, including Helena Bonham Carter as Lady Caterham and Martin Freeman as Battle. Mia says: 'I am thrilled to be part of this new interpretation.' The Walsh Sisters, BBC1 Novel: Rachel's Holiday and Anybody Out There by Marian Keyes Plot: Irish author Marian's much-loved Walsh family are the focus of this Dublin-set saga, based on two of her books. It follows the lives of sisters Rachel (Caroline Menton), Claire (Danielle Galligan), Maggie (Stefanie Preissner), Helen (Mairead Tyers) and Anna (Louisa Harland) as they navigate their 20s and 30s. A comedy with series topics, expect themes of heartbreak, grief, addiction and parenthood. Marian says: 'I love the scripts, they've really kept the spirit of the books.' Steve, Netflix Plot: Cillian Murphy stars in this intense feature-length drama that is based on a book that 'broke his heart'. He plays a headteacher at a college that aims to reform students, with the story taking place over 24 hours. As he and the students try to stop the school facing closure, Steve also struggles with his mental health. The plot also follows Shy, a troubled teenager who is on a self-destructive path. Cillian says: 'I love films that happen in real time, there's immediately an intense pressure on the characters.' A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, Sky Atlantic Novel: A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms novels by George R.R. Martin Plot: Game of Thrones fans, brace yourselves, the world of Westeros is expanding with this second prequel spin-off. Set 100 years before GoT and 100 years after House of the Dragon, this six-parter tells a gentler tale about Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). It's a lighter series, but author George teases: 'It's still Westeros, so no one is truly safe.'

Frankenstein faces the music on new Youth Orchestra tour
(Image: Jay Capperauld) NYOS, Scotland's national youth orchestra, is made up of 100 of Scotland's most prolific young musicians aged 14 to 22. This summer the orchestra will undertake its first international tour since 2015 visiting Perth, Liverpool and Saffron Walden before travelling to Berlin to represent Scotland at the Young Euro Classic festival. They will present a macabre and fantastical programme featuring the new Capperauld piece alongside work by Anna Clyne and Berlioz. (Image: NYOS) Capperauld's commission is the latest in a succession, all sharing a gothic sensibility, by the young composer, a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, who has, for the last decade, been himself 'galvanising' the world of classical music with his virtuoso compositions. What adds a fresh dimension to his latest piece is that the soloist will be Ryan Corbett, a BBC New Generation artist, who plays the accordion. (Image: Ryan Corbett) Capperauld, who is the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's Associate Composer and who was commissioned by His Majesty King Charles III to produce a new work for the Honours of Scotland Ceremony, says: "The accordion can be a deceptively difficult instrument to compose for because it is essentially a mini orchestra within itself. This offers huge scope and sonic options, but also makes it hard to pin the instrument down with compositional rules. 'I collaborated with Ryan Corbett throughout the process, trying out bits of material so that his identity as a performer is imprinted onto the piece, and I am also excited to be working with the young musicians of NYOS in bringing this musical monster to life. The young players are always so enthusiastic and genuinely interested in exploring new music with a fresh sense of curiosity.' Ryan, who has been hailed by composer Sir James McMillan as 'one of the most astonishing and surprising newcomers in Scottish music', who has won a string of accolades for his playing since being introduced to the accordion at the age of 11. The new work that he will be playing for the NYOS will have its world premiere in Perth Concert Hall on Friday, 1 August, followed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and the Saffron Hall in Essex, before making its international debut in Berlin, on 6 August. (Image: NYOS) The concerto, which was commissioned with support from The Richard Chester Creativity Fund, is written in one continuous movement that reimagines the Frankenstein story in a set of infernal dances through the nightmarish image of a chorus line of dancing dead frogs' legs. The accordion is shocked into animation by orchestral jolts, which set in motion an unfolding narrative of high-drama and macabre, tongue-in-cheek humour, with references to various musical dance forms, such as the tango, waltz, jig and tarantella. This is a challenging score for young musicians, but the orchestra has been likened by critics as 'hard-worn professionals' and is more than ready to thrill audiences with its performance. (Image: NYOS) The vision of NYOS is to provide access to world-class ensemble music-making for all communities in Scotland, and the organisation works with young musicians between the ages of eight and 25, providing music-making opportunities, inspirational orchestral experiences and advanced artistic and career skills development. Why Outlander star Sam Heughan was left deeply confused by Australia's winter weather amid visit Down Under
Sam Heughan has shared his astonishment at being met with sunny weather in Australia. The Scottish actor, who is Down Under for the the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming expo, filmed an Instagram Reel on Thursday as he strolled along Sydney 's famous Bondi Beach. The 45-year-old noted the clear skies and lack of snow or ice, with Sydney's winter weather reaching a mild peak of 16 degrees Celsius the day the video was filmed. 'Winter. Winter in Australia,' Sam marvelled as he strolled along the boardwalk beside the ocean. 'In Scotland, we have snow in winter. It's dark. Ice. The only ice here is apparently an iceberg, but it's a swimming pool' he added, referring to the Bondi Icebergs pool. 'Trying to do up my shirt because it's that cold,' he joked, gesturing at the sun. Sam may have gotten more of what he expected later in the night, when temperatures dropped to seven degrees Celsius once the sun went down. Last year, Sam signed up to the celebrity dating app Raya in a bid to find love, MailOnline revealed. Despite being known for his role as the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser in Outlander, the actor is yet to find his dream partner. Sam, who was last seen enjoying a romance with Australian model Monika Clarke in 2022, decorated his Raya profile with a slew of hunky snaps, and lists his main location as the UK. MailOnline contacted a representative for Sam Heughan for comment. Raya is a private membership community that started out as a dating app, but has since become a platform for networking and social discovery. Outlander is a historical drama television series based on the ongoing novel series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon. It is centered around an English combat nurse named Claire Randall (Catriona Balfe) from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743. Sam also starred opposite Poldark's Eleanor Tomlinson in the steamy Channel 4 drama The Couple Next Door. The series saw Evie and her husband Pete (Alfred Enoch) moving into an upscale neighbourhood, where they met next door neighbours cop Danny (Sam) and his wife, glamorous yoga instructor Becka (Jessica De Gouw).
