10,000 expected at Labour Day celebration at Axiata Arena

KUALA LUMPUR: Over 10,000 workers from both the public and private sectors are expected to join today's national-level Labour Day 2025 celebration at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, here which will be officially launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The event, which brings together representatives from trade unions, statutory bodies, as well as public and private sector organisations, serves as a platform to honour workers' contributions in driving national development in line with the Malaysia MADANI agenda.
Themed 'Pekerja Kesuma Bangsa', this year's celebration recognises the vital role of workers as the backbone of the country and key implementers of the aspirations of sustainability, justice and well-being.
At the event, the Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver a special address and launch the MADANI Worker Card initiative along with the MyFutureJobs mobile application.
Anwar will also present the Labour Day Awards to celebrate the achievements of outstanding workers, employers, trade unions and media representatives, including two new categories introduced by the Human Resource Ministry, namely the National Public Service Worker Icon Award (Senior Management) and the Best Media Agency Award.
In conjunction with the celebration, various programmes are being held including pocket talks, a Labour Day Run, a special Friday sermon, the Forum Perdana Ehwal Islam, and a career carnival offering over 10,000 jobs.

Urgently needed are concrete, revenue-generating economic policies, not a continued reliance on tax increases and subsidy reductions that add financial pressure on the rakyat. Recently, the Prime Minister stated that Malaysia's new borrowings have decreased annually, from RM100bil in 2022 to RM80bil in 2024. He also claimed that consistent efforts have been made since 2022 to reduce the fiscal deficit from 5.5% to a projected 3.8% this year. However, this narrative attempts to obscure the actual increase in overall national debt by focusing only on the decline in new borrowing. The claim of a RM20bil drop in new debt over three years does not reflect the full picture. According to the latest fiscal and debt data released by Bank Negara Malaysia, the national debt continues to rise. Official reports, such as the Government Finance Statistics and the Economic Outlook Report, show that federal government debt exceeded RM1.17tril at the end of 2023. This figure rose to RM1.6324tril in 2024 and remained high at RM1.2476tril as of the first quarter of 2025. These numbers directly contradict the Prime Minister's claims and reveal a clear attempt to present a misleading version of the national debt status by selectively using statistics. National debt cannot be assessed by focusing solely on new borrowings. The total size of the debt, the debt-to-GDP ratio, refinancing obligations, and interest liabilities are all key structural factors that must be addressed. Suggesting that borrowing slightly less this year indicates meaningful fiscal improvement underestimates the public's understanding and concern. What matters most to the people is the actual debt burden carried by the country, not how the government chooses to interpret the data. If the debt continues to grow and interest payments increase, then the Prime Minister's remarks amount to self-deception and risk eroding public trust. Despite repeated assurances of fiscal reform and financial discipline, the Unity Government has yet to demonstrate genuine progress in reducing national debt or budget deficits over the past two years. Instead, it has expanded the Sales and Services Tax (SST) and reduced subsidies, effectively shifting the fiscal burden onto the public while failing to rein in government expenditure. Balancing the national budget should not come at the expense of ordinary Malaysians. The real crisis today lies in inflation and the rising cost of living. Yet the government has failed to introduce any substantial, revenue-boosting economic policy or reform plan. What the country truly needs are forward-looking policies that raise incomes, encourage investment, and create employment opportunities. Fiscal reforms must not be used as an excuse to add to the public's burden. Malaysians do not need more political packaging. Amanah pushes special Dewan Rakyat sitting on Middle-East conflict

ALOR STAR: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to convene a special Parliament sitting to address Malaysia's official position on the escalating conflict in the Middle East. This came following large-scale military action launched by Israel and the United States of America against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Amanah vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said the situation posed a grave threat to regional stability and could have far-reaching implications for global security, including Southeast Asia. "This military aggression has not only caused loss of lives and destruction of public infrastructure in Iran, but it has also opened the door to wider regional conflict that risks undermining global stability," he said in a statement today. Mahfuz said Malaysia must urgently deliberate on appropriate diplomatic measures and assess the geopolitical and economic impact, including supply chain disruptions, fluctuating oil prices, and regional security risks. "As the highest democratic institution in the country, Parliament cannot remain silent on matters involving universal justice, the sovereignty of other nations, and humanity. "The voice of the Malaysian people must be expressed through a legitimate and respectable channel which is the Dewan Rakyat," he said. Mahfuz stressed that as a neutral and principled nation, Malaysia must maintain its consistent stand of rejecting all forms of colonisation, invasion and violations of international law. Entering its second week, Israel began the conflict through 'preemptive' airstrikes on several strategic sites in Iran, including nuclear facilities, missile bases and military command centres, followed with retaliation by the Gulf state.
