Jose Iglesias the hero as Padres escape Royals
June 22 - Jose Iglesias' RBI infield single in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday lifted the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 win over the visiting Kansas City Royals.
Luis Arraez started the winning rally with a leadoff single off Daniel Lynch IV (3-2) and Xander Bogaerts lined a one-out double to left-center to push Arraez to third. Kansas City inserted John Schneider to face Iglesias but he slapped an 0-2 pitch up the middle. Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. gloved it but his off-balance throw home wasn't in time.
Robert Suarez (2-3) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win, getting help from his defense. Freddy Fermin ripped a two-out double to right-center after Drew Waters walked. But Waters was called out at home for running out of the baseline after missing the plate as he dove to avoid the tag of catcher Elias Diaz.
Iglesias pinch-hit in the seventh inning and tied the game on a two-run single to right. That hit no-decisioned both starters after strong outings.
Kansas City's Seth Lugo allowed just two hits and a run in 6 1/3 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts, while San Diego's Randy Vasquez pitched a season-high seven innings, yielding five hits and two runs with two walks and two strikeouts.
The first 6 1/2 innings were dominated completely by pitching, except for a mistake in the top of the sixth by Vasquez. After Vinnie Pasquantino's one-out single, Salvador Perez pounced on a cutter that drifted over the middle. He yanked it an estimated 412 feet over the wall in left-center, his ninth homer.
Lugo mowed down 18 straight hitters after Fernando Tatis Jr. slapped a leadoff single in the first. But the Padres got a leadoff double from Jackson Merrill in the seventh, then tied it against the Royals' bullpen.
Angel Zerpa issued two-out walks to Gavin Sheets and Bogaerts to fill the bases. After Iglesias was announced as a pinch-hitter for Jake Cronenworth, Kansas City lifted Zerpa for Lucas Erceg. But Iglesias poked an 0-2 pitch to right to score Merrill and Sheets, evening the score at 2.

A trio of New York Knicks stars, who lost to Indiana in the Eastern Conference Finals, also posted. Josh Hart simply tweeted 'Ty' with three prayer hands emojis. Jalen Brunson posted, 'Prayers up man' while Karl-Anthony Towns said something similar: 'You never want to see that, prayers up.' Even Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted, 'Prayers up man...' with similar emojis as the others. It's a disappointing end to a night that started with such promise for Haliburton, who went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc to grab nine points. If Haliburton did indeed tear his Achilles, he'd be the third NBA superstar to suffer that injury in these playoffs, alongside Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard and Boston Celtics guard Jayson Tatum. A torn Achilles would likely require surgery and a lengthy recovery time for the Indiana star. At halftime, Indiana is clinging on to a 48-47 lead.

Max Scherzer set to make Blue Jays return on Wednesday
June 23 - Future Hall of Fame pitcher Max Scherzer is set to make his return to the mound for Toronto on Wednesday when the Blue Jays play the middle game of a three-game set at the Cleveland Guardians. Manager John Schneider has officially listed Scherzer as the starter in that game. It will mark his first appearance since his Blue Jays debut versus Baltimore on March 29. "That's a huge, huge addition for us," Schneider said after Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. "That's Max Scherzer. I'll take that any day of the week." Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with Toronto in February. He only lasted three innings versus the Orioles in the third game of the season. He was initially placed on the 15-day injured list on March 30 with inflammation in his right thumb, but was eventually transferred to the 60-day IL. The 40-year-old has received two cortisone injections and was eligible to come off the list on May 29. He made two rehab starts for Triple-A Buffalo on June 13 and 18, fanning 12 batters and allowing two earned runs in 8 2/3 innings of work. He threw 75 pitches at Columbus on Wednesday and completed a bullpen session in Toronto on Sunday. "He's ready to go," Schneider said. "The thumb is a thing. It's a real thing. I think that getting to 75 pitches in his last start is a good thing and we just have to monitor it as we go. He knows his stuff is where it should be. Viewers before Game 7 of the NBA Finals were treated to the sight and sound of a screaming Stephen A. Smith, possibly too into the moment for his own good. Over an hour before tipoff of the final and decisive game of the championship series, Smith let his passion for the game out on-air - but possibly at a volume not appropriate for the occasion at the time. Video posted to social media by Awful Announcing showed Smith getting into a shouting match on ESPN with his co-star and former Oklahoma City Thunder player Kendrick Perkins. While starting off at a lower volume, Smith eventually raised his voice while calling Perkins 'really annoying' for believing that some players in this game may not be able to perform the same as they would in other environments. 'This is a man that is a champion, you're talking about a Game 7... he acts like everybody that's been producing all year long, come Game 7, "it's no different, it's no different." It's very, very, very different,' Smith said at the top of his lungs. Another member of the desk, former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers, fired back at Smith, saying, 'Just because you yell something doesn't mean it's true.'
