Race Across The World might not have the Bushtucker Trials of I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! or the physical demands of SAS: Who Dares Wins, but there is no doubt it is one of the toughest shows on TV – both for the contestants and the production team.
Now five seasons down and with a batch of famous faces getting ready for the third celebrity series, most viewers are now familiar with the rules of the BBC show.
As the title suggests, five pairs are tasked with racing across the globe, from a designated start point to a finish line in another country over the other side of the world.
On their journey, the teams cross various checkpoints, and are not allowed to use a smartphone or credit card, with only the cash equivalent of a one-way economy air ticket to their destination to pay for all travel, food and accommodation.
But what about all the rules that we don't know about, and the planning that goes into making the show? Well, allow us to lift the lid…
If you thought bosses just came up with a route for the contestants and hoped for the best, you'd be wrong. In fact, a whole team of people test it out beforehand.
Line producer Maria Kennedy told Radio Times: 'You get some really brave people out on the road for a couple of months [from the production team]. [They tell us], 'Here are going to be the sticking points. This is quite tricky. This bit is amazing'.'
She added: 'They do it all on a budget as well so they're not like going out and spending loads of money and having a great jolly. They're literally looking at the budget and seeing if it's possible to get by on less than 50 quid a day.'
According to the Guardian, only two producers go on the dry run, only one of whom actually knows the route and which way they are going.
'The other person has no idea and that person is in charge of making the decisions,' series producer Lucy Curtis said.
Each time travels with two members of the production crew, a local fixer and a security adviser, but they apparently keep enough distance to 'make the trip feel authentic', the Guardian reported.
Executive producer Mark Saben also told BBC News that a medical support vehicle also travels an hour or so behind the teams in some countries.
Mark Saben told Broadcast that a director of photography and a series director follow all the teams, capturing the atmospheric camera shots that showcase the destinations.
He explained: 'Not only did they shoot those big sweeping drone shots that capture the beauty and scale of their surroundings, but also the on-the-ground shots that convey the hustle and bustle of travelling, so viewers would feel immersed in the competitors' journeys.'
The production team have to stay quiet, even when it is clear that the teams are making mistakes.
Mark told Broadcast: 'How they made their journey was up to them. This meant, as a production, we had to react to their decisions, however nonsensical.
'It was a nightmare for production management, as the competing contributors decided how and where to go. You cannot underestimate how challenging the journey could be at times.'
Executive producer Stephen Day also told The Telegraph: 'We will intervene if they're in danger, and we have a real duty of care.
'If contestants – and there have been some – who are so focussed on budget that they're not eating then you have to get them to spend money on food.'
However, producers accompanying the participants on the road are not allowed to outright give them food, either.
Praising the embedded crews, exec Mark told the BBC: 'They had to do the same journey as them, sleeping alongside them on the bus, they weren't given a five-star hotel. So they were almost like a family, with its ups and downs.
'And while we had done recces, the teams found bits of the world which were totally surprising.'
Having done the initial recce before filming began, executive producer Mark Saben told BBC News that 'one of the poor sods had to do the actual trip again', this time with the real contestants.
'He was very stoical and didn't tell them until the very end, though. As much as possible, we wanted it to feel like a dry run,' Mark added.
Prior to filming, exec producer Mark said the first series was 'a year in the making', but added to the BBC: 'It's all very well doing theoretically, looking at timetables and things. But until someone does it for real, you don't know where the difficulties might lie.'
Things like visas and vaccines 'for every conceivable country' were sorted in advance.
He added to Broadcast that they also 'research every likely bus and train option, cost and connection'.
'We drew up protocols that set rules for how the teams could hitchhike, travel at night and cross borders safely,' he added.
'If there was a significant issue at home, we might allow them to speak to a nominated person but we really try to keep them in the bubble as much as possible,' Maria Kennedy explained (per Radio Times).
While the pamphlet of job ads is created by bosses, all the jobs are 100% real.
'We don't go to any of those places and say, 'For the purposes of the show, can you provide this kind of service?'' BBC commissioner Michael Jochnowitz said, according to Radio Times.
'Those are real jobs, real places, real money or accommodation and things like that so again, because they don't have access to a phone or the internet, we basically just give them a guide of potential opportunities in the area.'
Executive producer Mark Saben added: 'We use as a rule of thumb, it's like what you'd find on a board in a hostel or something like that so we want [it] to feel absolutely as authentic as it possibly can be.'
With budgets extremely tight, eating can become a real issue for the teams, and while you might think they are being given extras off camera, this is not the case.
Series two winner Emon Choudhury – who triumphed with his nephew Jamiul – said they would often ask strangers for food and water.
He told the Daily Express: 'I lost over a stone, a stone and a half and the same with my nephew, he lost quite a bit as well. The food was an issue.
'You always think on these TV shows, you get a sandwich off-camera or water or a little snack here or there but no, it wasn't like that!'
Series one winners Tony and Elaine Teasdale also told the Telegraph that during one leg, they 'wouldn't eat unless somebody fed us or we found super-cheap street food'.
'We'd buy little packs of rice for 20p each, then eat those for three meals a day. I went down a dress size from 14 to 12!' Elaine said.
'Water is more important. We took chlorine tablets, so we didn't have to buy bottled water. That saved both money and time because we never had to find shops. Kebabs in Europe, rice in Asia, and we never bought any drink.'
While season one of Race Across The World saw contestants travel from London to Singapore, and season two saw them begin in Mexico and end in Argentina, the third series was contained to just one country – Canada.
This was because when the show was filmed, there were still many Covid travel restrictions still in place, which would have been an added complication for the teams and the production.
The third season and the celebrity edition were originally planned to air much earlier, but production was pulled early into the pandemic.
Season three winners, Tricia Sail and Cathie Rowe revealed that they first applied for the show in 2019, but didn't hear anything back until 2021 because of Covid.
Race Across The World concludes with the reunion special on Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One, with a celebrity version due to air later in the year.

Sexual assault and drink driving – cosy crime but not as we know it
A puzzle-setter turns sleuth in a quirky British crime series. Stop me if you think you've heard this one before. Murder Most Puzzling is trying to be Ludwig, which was a hit for the BBC last year. But it's a pale imitation. While that one was a five-star treat starring David Mitchell, this one is a two-star rip-off starring Phyllis Logan. The missteps start as soon as we are introduced to her character, Cora Felton. Cora is The Puzzle Lady, a crossword compiler whose job has made her so famous that she has her own range of biscuits and TV adverts. Let's not pause to ponder how unlikely that is. She is called in to investigate the case of a young woman found murdered in a churchyard, with a mysterious crossword clue in her pocket. Unfortunately, Cora can't make head nor tail of the clue when she first sees it because she's still sozzled from the night before. When we first meet her, she is passed out at the wheel of her car after a spot of drink-driving. Drink-driving? Really? We're supposed to find this quirkily amusing, but it strikes the wrong tone right away. It's a sign that the show doesn't quite know what it's supposed to be. This is cosy crime, yet having someone at a town hall meeting ask if the murder victim was sexually assaulted belongs in a grittier police drama. At least the mystery is wrapped up in a feature-length episode rather than being dragged out. The show is based on a book series by Parnell Hall and the failings of the TV series are odd because its writer, Dominique Moloney is a veteran of Father Brown and The Sister Boniface Mysteries. Some bits do conform to the cosy crime template: jaunty music, a picturesque setting in the fictional market town of Bakerbury (it's Lisburn in Northern Ireland), and the odd silly character, such as the blustering mayor in a cravat who runs the local police force. The programme's saving graces are the three lead performances. Logan, best known as Mrs Hughes in Downton Abbey, is a safe pair of hands and does her best with the material. Charlotte Hope is a bright spot as Cara's niece and right-hand-woman, Sherry. And Adam Best is, well, the best thing here as DCI Derek Hooper, who has never worked a murder case before and reluctantly turns to Cora for help. There is a twist halfway through relating to Cora's job, and if you didn't see it coming then I'm afraid your sleuthing skills are a little below par. For a hotel to do it in Florida, it not only overcame those obstacles, but it dealt directly with natural disasters and had to work around Mickey Mouse's shadow. So, the fact that The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection, a sophisticated, salmon-toned hotel in the heart of St. Petersburg, Florida, has been open since New Year's Eve 1925 is a cause for celebration. Find out why the milestone is the perfect opportunity to visit the property and its surrounding area. Every inch of the hotel tells a story. The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection The Vinoy looks like a structure you'd find along the Tuscan coast. The bold exterior color helps with that assertion, but so too does the Mediterranean Revival-style hotel's ceramic tiles, hand-painted cypress rafters and custom rocking chairs. The Tampa Bay property teeters between nuanced nostalgia and contemporary cool without leaning too heavily either way. Over the years, spaces have been enhanced — when The Vinoy's leadership team called for a major renovation in 2023, the Rockwell Group architecture and design firm upgraded everything from the public spaces to the spa — but the same charm from a century ago can still be felt within the hallowed halls. For our visit, we stayed in a newly renovated Historic Premium Room with Bayview. While far from the biggest accommodations (that distinction goes to the 1,420-square-foot Marina View Suite), it has a rattan and wood dresser, a couch and a mini fridge that gave the space an elevated residential feel. A bathroom awash in marble and scented with Ortigia Sicilia toiletries makes the 'home' that much more refined. The just-opened Elliott Aster is an elegant epicurean affair. Anthony Tahlier One of the property's commemorative gifts to its guests is Elliott Aster, a sophisticated brasserie that opened in May 2025. In a dining room filled with dark woods and muted golds, you'll nosh on flame-kissed wagyu strip and beef cheek tortelli while sipping on signature pours named Downtown St. Pete (bourbon, amaro, raspberry cordial and grapefruit) and Old Havana (rum, chile liqueur, Italian bitters, pineapple and lemon). Elliott Aster is the high-end culinary experience Vinoy visitors were missing. But the hotel understands that every night won't call for sports jackets and Lilly Pulitzer sweaters. For those more casual evenings, there's Paul's Landing. The indoor-outdoor eatery serves up juicy burgers, plump wings, cold beers and priceless peeks at the marina across the street. If you want to have some fun with your order, give the exquisitely blackened grouper sandwich a try. Skip any sweets Paul's Landing might have and head down to the ground-level Lottie. This cute, French-inspired counter specializes in coffee drinks and delicious desserts. Though all the creative confections in the glass display will catch your eye, the colorful macarons and fruit tarts are what you'll remember most. Bask in the pool, spa and other Vinoy treats. The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection With fun on the Vinoy's calendar in the summer (themed brunches) and winter holidays (Nutcracker High Tea), centennial-focused events will occur in 2026. Until they do, make the most of all the property regularly offers its guests. Explore the park and surrounding neighborhoods with a complimentary one-hour e-bike ride. Go on a docent-led hotel history tour that includes tea and pastries. And if that new putter is just itching to get out, make the six-minute drive over to Vinoy Golf Club for a round. Back at the hotel, be sure to reserve some time for Vinoy Spa. While always having one eye on the calendar — this summer, for example, there's a seasonal package with a 50-minute Manuka Honey Facial, a 50-minute aromatherapy massage with Himalayan stones and a food credit to the Parasol poolside eatery — the sanctuary's everyday menu offers a host of plant- and coastal-centric treatments like Marine Renewal, a body-balancing massage that uses Swedish techniques to blissfully renew and center. The bay is breathtaking from the pier. DeMarco Williams The scenes from your room are so special because you're just that close to the water. Before you can pull out your phone to order an Uber to the park, you will have already walked to it. Stroll along the bay for a few minutes and you'll run into St. Pete Pier, a family-friendly attraction with a big playground, a snack bar and a complimentary shuttle that circles the area. Keep walking until the pier ends, and you'll hit Teak. The seafood-focused restaurant's sesame-crusted salmon is good, but you'll want seconds of the bay views. Mosey over to the St. Petersburg Museum of History after your meal. The small but substantial attraction uses artifacts ('Pathway to Eternity: Life, Death and Afterlife'), photographs ('The American Soldier: Conflicts, Shipwrecks and Homefront'), excursions (Historic Civil Rights Trolley Tour) and other mediums to shed light on local history and global affairs. Just down the street from it is the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. Housing an impressive collection of classics while also featuring strong temporary exhibits ('In Caravaggio's Light' will show from October to February), MFA makes a great afternoon detour. Coincidentally, the museum marks its 60th year in 2025, giving yet another reason to come to this quaint corner of Florida to properly celebrate.
