Telangana: Singareni to set up Rs 3,000 cr pumped storage power plant at Medipalli mine

Hyderabad, June 21 (UNI) As part of its business expansion strategy, State-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), which has already established thermal and solar power plants, is now venturing into an innovative new power generation initiative. Based on the directives issued by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, Singareni has decided to set up a pumped storage power plant (PSP) at the site of the closed Medipalli Opencast Mine in Ramagundam-1 area, utilising the existing mine water sump, the Mining company said in a release here on Saturday. Chairman and Managing Director N. Balram said that this is the first of its kind project in Telangana, and expressed confidence that Singareni will successfully implement this pilot initiative. He stated that after completing preliminary studies, SCCL has now entrusted WAPCOS Limited—a government agency—with the task of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) by officially issuing a Letter of Award. He said that the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Energy, Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, had personally visited the Medipalli mine and the proposed site, and the state government has responded positively to the plan. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 3,000 crore. However, the plant is expected to generate a strong financial return for Singareni with a projected lifespan of 40 years at a capacity of 500 MW. Once the DPR is finalised by WAPCOS, tenders for construction are expected to be floated, he said. WAPCOS Limited, entrusted by Singareni, will carry out a comprehensive study for constructing the 500 MW pumped storage project using the Medipalli mine water sump. The DPR will include geological, geotechnical, hydrological, civil design, power generation capacity, mechanical and electrical designs, environmental and safety aspects. It will also provide estimates of construction time, total costs, and the market potential for the power produced by the plant. This kind of plant operates similarly to a hydroelectric project. In conventional hydro projects, electricity is generated using the natural flow of water turning turbines. In contrast, pumped storage plants work by pumping water to a higher elevation using solar power during the day, and releasing it through turbines at night to generate electricity. Currently, the Medipalli Opencast mine has a large water sump about 157 meters deep, which holds a substantial volume of water year-round. The proposed project will include the construction of another surface reservoir of similar capacity. During the day, water from the mine sump will be pumped into this surface reservoir using solar energy. At night, the water will be released back down through pipes, spinning turbines to generate power. Because water is pumped up and then used again for generation, this method is called a Pumped Storage Project (PSP). Due to the availability of both the deep water sump and suitable surface land for a reservoir at the Medipalli mine, SCCL has identified it as the optimal site for this project. The surface reservoir is expected to be around 2,350 meters in length and 23 meters in depth, with a total water storage capacity of 9.64 million cubic meters. Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for the launch of the e Vitara in India. The electric car made its debut in Milan, followed by the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January, and has been revealed globally. Recently, Suzuki launched the all-electric e Vitara in the United Kingdom with a price tag of Euro 29,999 (around Rs 35 lakh) for the entry-level variant with a 49 kWh battery pack. Meanwhile, the top-end variant of the EV with Ultra AllGrip-e variant with a 61 kWh battery pack and all-wheel-drive powertrain comes at Euro 37,799 (approximately Rs 44 lakh). Also, a test mule of the all-electric car has been spotted testing in India, suggesting its launch to be slotted soon. Talking about its exterior and design, the e Vitara takes cues from the eVX concept, with the amalgam of the Emotional Versatile Cruiser concept. The front fascia is rather upright, and it looks SUV-ish in all regards. The use of blacked-out elements around the chin offers a rugged appeal to the nose. Around the sides, it gets black cladding for the hexagonal wheel arches. The roof profile is flat for the large part. The chunky flared arches add muscles to the design. The charging port is fixed on the front fender, and the bonnet here is a clamshell unit. Other highlights include a shark-fin antenna and c-pillar-mounted door handles. The Indian spec Suzuki E Vitara will come with two battery pack options: 49 kWh and 61 kWh (as offered in the UK). The smaller battery pack will offer a WLTP range of 346 km, while the bigger battery pack is rated to offer 428 km of range in its single-motor configuration. Meanwhile, the dual-motor variant with the 61 kWh battery pack will offer 412 km of range.

His idea was to monetize WhatssApp by charging users a tiny sum after a certain large number of free messages were expended. Sandberg stuck by the ad model that had already allowed Facebook to print money for years, telling Acton that his idea wouldn't scale. By the time he left the company, Acton knew that he couldn't stop the inevitable. 'At the end of the day, I sold my company," he said. Still, both internal and public resistance to ads has made Meta's monetization plans for WhatsApp a fitful journey over the last decade. Meta's chief marketing officer Alex Schultz admitted on LinkedIn that the company had announced ads a few times already. 'This time it's for real," he added. Meta first publicly announced its intention to bring ads to WhatsApp Status in November 2018, then put the plans on hold and nixed them in 2020, before announcing in 2023 that a rollout was back on. The U-turns are down to the staunch views of WhatsApp's founders, who infused company culture even after they vested their stock options and left Meta. WhatsApp users are also accustomed to an ad-free app that keeps their conversations private with end-to-end encryption. When Meta tweaked its privacy terms in 2021 to add more business-messaging features, many ditched it for rival apps like Signal and Telegram. Meta had to move slowly. Now it's trying to make up for lost time. It will target ads based on users' country or city, channels they follow and how they interact with ads they see on Status or on stablemate apps Facebook and Instagram if their accounts are linked. That's less invasive than the targeting done on Facebook or Instagram, but it's still a form of clutter that WhatsApp's founders abhorred. And Zuckerberg could still push for deeper insights as revenue from Status starts to pour in. Meta's investors can rest easy knowing the company has yet another platform to capitalize on as Zuckerberg spends heavily on AI. The rest of us have yet another reminder that tech visionaries can sometimes be as naive as they are idealistic. Sam Altman's efforts to start OpenAI as a non-profit that lived off donations from billionaires was arguably a pipe dream; hence his partnership with Microsoft. DeepMind's Demis Hassabis spent years trying to break away from Google in the hope that it would spin off a valuable AI lab after spending $650 million on it. He was wrong and his company was drawn deeper into Google. Koum and Acton may have also been wrong to think they could sell WhatsApp to one of the world's biggest ad businesses and keep it ad-free.
