York police shoot male who allegedly attacked female in Markham, Ont.

A man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was shot by police in a Markham, Ont., condominium early Wednesday morning following a reported dispute, the province's police watchdog said.

York Regional Police said they responded to a welfare check call on Buchanan Drive at around 4:40 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a male who was 'actively attacking' a female, police allege.

The Special Investigations Unit, which responds when police have been involved in a death or injury, said someone within an apartment building called police after hearing a dispute from another unit.

The SIU said officers entered the unit and one of them shot the 34-year-old man shortly after.

'The nature of the interaction is under investigation. All I can tell you at this point in time is that police heard sounds coming from outside of the unit,' SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said at a press conference Wednesday.

Both people were taken to hospital, Hudon said. The man is in critical, life-threatening condition while the woman is in stable condition, she said.

Hudon said the SIU has assigned three investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.
