The Mortician review – so queasy it will stay with you for ever

The Guardian7 hours ago

The smart thing about comparing something to The Jinx is that you're essentially daring viewers to stick with you until the very end. After all, as good as The Jinx was, it didn't reach legendary status until its final few moments, when notorious murder suspect Robert Durst paused an interview with his microphone still on, and muttered a confession while using the toilet.
The Mortician, it has to be said, is pound for pound more staggering than The Jinx. Joshua Rofé's three-part documentary about California cremator David Sconce is a feat of construction, patiently doling out larger and larger transgressions until the whole thing becomes swamped in unimaginable horror. It's the kind of documentary where, when the credits roll, you realise that you haven't drawn breath for several minutes.
As with most true crime documentaries, Sconce's case is a known one. Perhaps you watched it unfold at the time, or perhaps you like to spend your time trawling the darker corners of Wikipedia. This is the downfall of many products of this ilk; they're flashy retellings that add very little of value. The Mortician is not that. The Lamb Funeral Home scandal made enough of a splash to have inspired more than one novel, and yet The Mortician deserves to go down as the definitive version.
On some level, it's the story of a very efficient businessman. As the figure in charge of Pasadena crematorium Lamb Funeral Home, David Sconce was determined to undercut his rivals. He would perform long round-trips around mortuaries in his rundown van, collecting bodies, burning them and returning them for the low, low price of $55. But cremations are slow. It takes from two to three hours to burn a body and let the remains cool enough to safely gather them. So Sconce started burning a few at a time. And then more and more, breaking bones to cram as many as he could into his incinerator. In barely any time at all the business went from performing 194 cremations a year to 8,173, handing bereaved relatives urns scooped from bins brimming with the mixed ashes of countless different people.
Incredibly, it only gets worse from there. To reveal too much would be to spoil the cascade of monstrosities that follow, but it makes for extremely queasy viewing. The thefts, the desecration, the complete detachment between the human life that ended and the wholesale scavenging that followed. It is unbelievably dark.
At the centre of it all is Sconce himself. Met by the documentary crew outside jail, where he had just finished serving a 10-year sentence, Sconce is a weirdly charismatic presence. Described by one talking head as 'Richie Cunningham' from Happy Days, he has a big, open, all-American face, and golly-gees his way through much of his interviews despite the atrocities laid at his feet. At best, he defends his actions with a cold logic – 'People have got to be more in control of their emotions,' he says at one point of the appalled bereaved; 'That's not your loved one any more' – but at worst there's a showboating bravado, as if he can't get enough of his own performance.
And this is ultimately what gets him. The Mortician has received so many comparisons to The Jinx because of how it ends. During an unguarded moment when he believes the camera is no longer running, Sconce appears to admit to something awful. It's left vague, since there's nothing as concrete as Durst muttering that he 'killed them all', but it's still enough for Rofé to publicly encourage renewed investigation.
However, while the climax will grab all the headlines, the journey is just as important. The Mortician isn't only about one grim individual who did horrendous things to thousands of corpses; it's about the dehumanising effects of unfettered capitalism and our own relationship to death. In the cold light of day, how should we treat the people we love once they are gone? Is the dignity we afford their bodies purely ceremonial? Do they simply become matter to be disposed of by whatever means necessary?
It is a harrowing journey to get to the end of the programme – the faint of heart should be warned that the series includes talk of concentration camps, infants, organ harvesting and something nefariously referred to as 'popping chops' – but it's worth it. The Mortician is so much more than a gussied-up Wikipedia page. It's something that is unlikely to ever leave you.
The Mortician is on Sky and Now in the UK. In the US, it airs on HBO and Max. In Australia, it airs on Max

Fat Joe accused of sex with underage girls by former hypeman in shock suit

Fat Joe has denied allegations made in shocking new lawsuit that implicates the rap veteran of engaging in 'sexual relations with children who were 15 and 16 years old.' Fat Joe's one-time Terrence 'T.A.' Dixon, said in court docs obtained by Daily Mail that the 53-year-old musical artist was involved in a number of sordid arrangements with underage girls. Dixon said in legal docs that he 'personally witnessed' the Grammy-nominated rapper, 54, 'engage in sexual relations with children who were fifteen and sixteen years old.' One of the teens the New York City native was allegedly involved with inappropriately, according to Dixon, was a Dominican female, who he was engaged with in 'oral sex and other sexual acts.' The entertainer, whose full name is Joseph Antonio Cartagena, allegedly carried on the relationship with the teen girl 'in exchange for cash, clothing, and payment of her cell phone bill.' Daily Mail has reached out to Fat Joe, his reps and his lawyer Joe Tacopina for comment on the story. Fat Joe's one-time hypeman Terrence 'T.A.' Dixon, said in court docs obtained by Daily Mail that the 53-year-old musical artist was involved in a number of sordid arrangements with underage girls The What's Luv? vocalist allegedly was also involved with a 15-year-old 'Caucasian girl, not from the US' in the wake of a 'concert overseas.' According to the complaint, The All the Way Up performer had the girl flown to Miami and New York City multiple time, Dixon told the court. Dixon alleged that the Get It Poppin' artist foot the bill for the underage girl to have a Brazilian Butt Lift operation performed, Dixon said in legal docs. Dixon told the court that the underage female referred to in the court docs 'eventually left Defendant and is now married to a professional athlete.' Fat Joe allegedly fell 'in love with' a third female - a Latina female who he met when she was 15, Dixon also claimed in legal docs. Dixon said Fat Joe 'was in love with' the female, and paid her bills and took her on the road. 'He brought her to Florida and would put her up in a condo he rented a few blocks from his house with his wife,' said Dixon, who told the court he had been working with the rap artist for a stretch from 2006 thru 2019. Dixon said Fat Joe engaged in 'coercive labor exploitation, financial fraud, sexual manipulation, violent intimidation, and psychological coercion' as his boss. He added that he was 'consistently underpaid, denied songwriting credits and deliberately concealed from royalties and backend compensation.' Dixon said he's a 'lyricist, background vocalist, security team member, and creative collaborator.' Dixon also named in the suit Roc Nation, Sneaker Addict Touring LLC, Slate, Inc. LLC, Pete 'Pistol Pete' Torres, Richard 'Rich Player' Jospitre, Erica Juliana Moreira. Joe Tacopina, the lawyer who is representing Fat Joe, denied all of the allegations made against the rapper to Page Six. Tacopina said he's been in touch with the people Dixon alleged were Fat Joe's underage lovers in the suit, and 'they've made it clear that some of them don't even know Fat Joe.' Fat Joe previously entered into litigation last month against his former associate Dixon over allegations he had engaged in underage sex. Fat Joe said that Dixon's efforts amounted to a 'money grab' and that Dixon 'enjoyed the perquisites of touring, luxurious travel, and other fringe benefits of a world-renowned musician's team.' Fat Joe said that in the six years since they had concluded working with another, Dixon had 'never raised any issues or sought any additional compensation.'

Miley Cyrus' co-star hits back at claims he smoked pot on Hannah Montana set

Miley Cyrus ' former castmate hit back at her claims that he had smoked pot while on set of Hannah Montana. The Grammy winner, 32 - who recently made a surprise appearance at Beyonce's Cowboy Carter show in Paris - made the allegations about Mitchel Musso on Thursday's episode of her mom Tish and sister Brandi's Sorry We're Cyrus podcast. At one point, the singer revealed that her father Billy Ray Cyrus had smoked marijuana on set before claiming Musso, 33, had the same habit. The actor - who had played the character of Oliver on the hit series from 2006 through 2011 - denied the claims in a statement to E! News. 'Well, that's not how I remember it,' Musso expressed. 'However, I've got plenty of stories from those years that might be worth having a conversation about. 'If we're revisiting Hannah Montana history - just say the word,' he continued, before emphasizing that he had no hard feelings towards the performer. 'All love to Miley and the fam, even when the rewrites get this creative,' Mitchel concluded to the outlet. Cyrus and Musso had worked alongside other stars on the Disney channel series including her dad Billy Ray, Emily Osment, Jason Earles and Moises Arias. The show was a hit and aired on the network for a total of four seasons - and also spawned concert films and other projects such as Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009). The show also garnered a number of accolades during its time on the air, such as receiving four Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Children's Program. Along with Hannah Montana, Mitchel is also known for his roles in the animated series Phineas And Ferb as well as Disney XD's Pair Of Kings. However, he was written out of the latter after his arrest in 2013 for DUI suspicion - and had also been driving while intoxicated under the legal age since he was age 20 at the time of the incident. In 2023, he was arrested for public drunkenness and allegedly stealing a bag of chips from a motel in Texas. Later that same year, the two major charges of public intoxication and theft were dropped. During Miley's appearance on the Sorry We're Cyrus podcast which dropped on Thursday, she cleared the air about what went down behind the scenes of Hannah Montana. When a fan wrote in asking, 'What's a core memory from the Hannah Montana days that still makes you laugh?' Miley didn't miss a beat, replying, 'Dad smoking pot and everyone blaming me for it' - and her sister Brandi quickly confirmed, 'I do remember that.' The Flowers hitmaker pointed to Tish and added, 'And he wasn't sharing, 'cause this one wasn't toking yet.' Tish - who's since been open about her marijuana use - chimed in with a laugh, recalling how she tried to defend Billy Ray at the time: 'They were calling me saying 'B-Ray' was smoking pot and I was like, "Absolutely not, he would never do that!"' The trio then cracked up as they joked about Miley's former Hannah Montana castmate Mitchel Musso taking the blame instead. Back in January, Tish opened up about why she stopped smoking weed, despite previously embracing her status as a self-proclaimed stoner. 'It was kind of by accident that I stopped smoking,' she explained on the Jan. 2 episode of the podcast. 'I went on vacation and it was somewhere I could not have pot and like three days in, had the worst anxiety I've ever had in my life. And when I tried to smoke again… Nope.' After quitting cold turkey, she realized that what once calmed her nerves had started to do the opposite. Smoking, which used to help with her anxiety, now 'makes it even worse.' Still, she admitted she's considering revisiting it as she continues to struggle with her mental health. 'The last seven months has been so bad for me, like major anxiety,' she said at the time. 'It really did just help me in so many ways. And lately I just have not been okay.' Brandi, while not a user herself, voiced her support for her mom giving it another try. 'She was great on weed. Best version of herself.' The marijuana bombshell comes after Miley unpacked a decade's worth of family drama and trauma and revealed how she mended all of her fences. She grew up to be a global pop star in her own right, though she revealed on last Tuesday's episode of Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky, her road to fame was filled with family strife. She teased the whole family went through a, 'really difficult, dark decade' but they were able to get through it. Miley revealed on the podcast that the family was able to mend their fences without therapy. 'We're so messy, we didn't even do any of that,' Miley joked of her family struggles, revealing the reason a therapist wasn't involved. 'Just to get each other into a room to get to counseling would have been a war,' Miley admitted. She told Lewinsky that at one point of the 'dark decade,' half of her family members were not speaking to each other. Miley admitted she, ' had a lot of loyalty' to her mother Tish, who split with father Billy Ray back in 2022 after nearly 30 years of marriage and sharing Miley, Braison, 31 and Noah, 25. Before their official split and divorce that was finalized in 2023, Miley said that her parents were on-and-off, as she revealed how that affected her. '[I] watched what happens when you don't clean things up as they're happening,' Miley admitted. 'They really do stack. And then all of the sudden you go, "Oh my God, it's been 10 years and this is a mess I barely even know how to start. This is emotional hoarding,"' she admitted. Ultimately, the singer, 'cleaned all that up,' during a, 'really important part of [her] year … putting those lines of communication back together. 'I just kind of busted through the pile that stacked and just [went], "I'm here, you're here, let's start by having a good time together and then as we start bringing some happiness and joy into each other's life, then we'll be in a better place to have these conversations,"' she admitted. Cyrus also added it 'was easier to [wave] a white flag' than go through counseling with someone else.

Friday's briefing: Lionel Messi stars at Club World Cup and Botafogo stun PSG

Lionel Messi lit up the Club World Cup with a fine free-kick as Inter Milan came from behind to beat Porto in Atlanta. Champions League winners Paris St Germain were stunned by South American champions Botafogo in Group B, while Atletico Madrid proved too strong for the Seattle Sounders. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca faced questions over Mykhailo Mudryk, while Real Madrid revealed star man Kylian Mbappe had been discharged from hospital. Closer to home, Wales boss Rhian Wilkinson scaled new heights to announce her Euro 2025 squad. Lionel Messi magic for Miami Lionel Messi scored a trademark free-kick as Inter Miami beat Porto 2-1 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium to move a step closer to the last 16 of the Club World Cup. Porto took the lead in the eighth minute from the penalty spot but Miami equalised just after half-time through a thumping finish from Telasco Segovia. Messi then gave the Atlanta crowd what they came for when he clipped home a fine 20-yard free-kick in the 54th minute. Igor Jesus scored the only goal of the game as Botafogo stunned Paris St Germain in Botafogo, with Atletico Madrid beating the Seattle Sounders 3-1 in Group B's other game. Elsewhere in Group A, Palmeiras beat Egyptian side Al Ahly 2-0 at the MetLife Stadium – with the match interrupted during the second half because of the threat of lightning in East Rutherford. Enzo Maresca – I'll talk to 'Misha' soon Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed he has not yet spoken to winger Mykhailo Mudryk since the Ukrainian was charged with violating anti-doping rules. The 24-year-old has not played since being suspended last December after testing positive for a prohibited substance, and is facing a lengthy ban after being charged by the Football Association. Blues boss Maresca fronted questions on Mudryk as he prepared the team for their second Group D match against Flamengo in Philadelphia on Friday. 'The last time I spoke with Misha, he was quite good. I didn't see him worried, or at least I didn't see him not good. It was OK,' Maresca said. 'I don't know how he is now, but for sure in the next days, weeks, we're going to have a talk.' Rhian Wilkinson has high hopes for Wales Rhian Wilkinson hiked up Wales' highest peak at Yr Wyddfa before delivering the names of 23 players determined to scale their own summit at Euro 2025. 'It (qualifying) was always going to be an uphill battle with little setbacks,' said former Canada international Wilkinson. 'As we have moved towards the Euros we have talked about the summit, the Everest part of it. That something is impossible until it isn't. 'Outside Wales people can think whatever they want. Our goal is to show up and deliver to the best of our ability. I am sure people will be looking up Wales on a map very soon.' Kylian Mbappe in and then out of hospital Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe has been discharged from hospital after being admitted with 'acute gastroenteritis'. The 26-year-old France international missed Wednesday night's 1-1 Club World Cup draw with Al Hilal through illness, with head coach Xabi Alonso revealing he had a fever. Real Madrid subsequently confirmed Mbappe was suffering from 'an acute case of gastroenteritis' and had been admitted to hospital for further tests and treatment, before later being cleared to return to the team's base. 'Our player Kylian Mbappe was discharged from the hospital this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid training camp,' a club statement read. 'Mbappe will continue receiving specific medical treatment and will gradually return to team activity.' What's on today? The Club World Cup continues with Chelsea facing Flamengo in Philadelphia. The Blues will be looking to build on their opening Group D win over LAFC, who play ES Tunis in Nashville.
