Jackrabbits take series opener from Omaha
BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) — South Dakota State scored five times in the bottom of the third inning and Dylan Driessen pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief as the Jackrabbit baseball team opened a three-game Summit League series with a 7-5 victory over Omaha Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
In winning their second game in a row, the Jackrabbits improved to 6-22 overall and 3-8 in league play. Omaha dropped to 11-19 overall and 5-8 in The Summit League.
SDSU sent 10 men to the plate in the third inning, which started with a bang as Jess Bellows connected on his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. After Dagen Schramm walked and Bryce Ronken was hit by a pitch, Nolan Grawe drove in the second run of the inning with a double to center. That would be the first of four consecutive hits by the Jackrabbits as Carter Sintek, Luke Luskey and Owen Siegert followed with successive run-scoring singles to knock out Maverick starter Oliver Mabee.
The Jackrabbits increased their lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning when Davis Carr scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman right-hander Caleb Duerr held Omaha scoreless through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. The Mavericks loaded the bases as the first three hitters in the frame notched base hits, two of which were infield singles. Henry Zipay walked to force in the first Maverick run and a second run scored on a groundout before Mason Gaines hit a two-run double to center field to pull Omaha to within 6-4.
The Mavericks cut the deficit to a single run the next inning as Blake Stenger was hit by a pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly after stealing his third base of the afternoon. Ty Madison came on in relief of Duerr to record the first two outs of the inning before giving way to Driessen.
A right-hander from Omaha, Driessen did not allow a hit in posting his second save of the season. He struck out six, walked two and hit one batter. Duerr, meanwhile, scattered eight hits over five-plus innings, striking out three and walking one.
Luskey swung the momentum back in the Jackrabbits' favor at the plate by hitting his league-leading ninth home run of the season with two outs in the home half of the seventh. His solo blast to left field was his second hit of the game and helped pace SDSU's 10-8 advantage in hits.
Schramm also tallied two hits for the Jackrabbits, while Jackson Trout notched a pair of hits for Omaha.

Instant Recap: LSU baseball beats UCLA and inches closer to a CWS finals trip
After taking game one in Omaha against Arkansas, LSU was scheduled to face the UCLA Bruins in the winner's bracket. The winner of this game would be one win away from the College World Series finals. LSU would pull away after the rain delay to win this one 9-5. Anthony Eyanson got the start on the mound for the Tigers, but things did not go according to plan. The Bruins scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and no ball went further than the infield. If the Tigers wanted to win this one, they would have to dig themselves out of an early hole. Advertisement It did not take them long to do that, as LSU took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs as Jake Brown hit an RBI single and Jared Jones hit a three-run bomb to give LSU a 4-3 lead. The score would remain that way until the bottom of the third inning when an RBI single by Luis Hernandez would hit an RBI single to increase the LSU lead to 5-3. Before the start of the fourth inning, the sky opened up, and rain started to pour in Omaha. The game was suspended until 10 a.m. CT on Tuesday. After the rain delay, Eyanson was done, so the question this morning was, who would Jay Johnson choose to pitch for the rest of this game? The answer to that was freshman Casan Evans. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Daniel Dickinson hit an RBI single to score Jones and extend the lead to 8-3 Tigers as we went to the eighth inning. After a single and a hit by pitch, Evans' day was done as Cooper Williams would enter to pitch. Advertisement Evans finished the day after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits, five strikeouts, and zero walks. A walk, a fielder's choice, an RBI single, and another walk loaded the bases for the Bruins as they cut the lead to 8-5. That would be the end of the line for Williams as Chase Shores entered to pitch. Shores got a groundout on his first pitch to end the inning and keep LSU in the lead. In the bottom of the eighth inning, LSU looked to get some insurance runs to offset the two runs UCLA got in the top of the eighth. They would do just that as Jones hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 9-5. Shores retired the Bruins 1-2-3 and LSU is now one win away from a trip to the CWS final. LSU baseball meets old Baton Rouge villian in College World Series final
With a walk-off win against Arkansas on Wednesday, LSU baseball earned a berth in the College World Series finals. The Tigers face a program on the rise and an old rival from nearly a decade ago in the best-of-three series. They'll need to enact revenge if they want to win their second national championship in three years. Advertisement LSU plays Coastal Carolina in the finals, which begin Saturday at 6 PM CT inside Charles Schwab Stadium in Omaha. The Chanticleers defeated Louisville 11-3 to punch their ticket to their second College World Series final. Coast Carolina's last appearance came in 2016, when it won the program's first national championship. In that same NCAA Tournament, the Chanticleers defeated LSU in back-to-back games during the Baton Rouge Super Regional. An unseeded team nationally, Coastal Carolina came into Alex Box Stadium and knocked off an LSU squad ranked inside the top-8 in front of one of the most intimidating crowds in the country. The Tigers suffered an 11-8 loss in game one, then in game two, suffered a defeat in walk-off fashion that ended their season. Coastal Carolina defeated Florida, TCU and Arizona en route to hoisting the trophy in 2016. Current LSU head coach Jay Johnson held the same role at Arizona at the time.
