Doctors who have travelled to over 41 countries reveal how to avoid getting diarrhoea on holiday while still eating local food

Daily Mail27-04-2025

A doctor duo with a passion for travel have shared expert advice to help holidaymakers avoid a common illness capable of ruining a dream trip: traveller's diarrhoea.
For many globetrotters, sampling local food is one of the highlights of a trip abroad - but it can also come with unwelcome side effects: stomach upsets and frequent, loose stools caused by contaminated food or unfamiliar bacteria.
But according to Dr Méabh and Dr Danny, a couple who've travelled to 41 countries in their van - yet have 'rarely' fallen ill - there's no need to miss out on delicious, authentic cuisine if you follow a few simple hygiene rules.
The pair, who hail from Ireland and Scotland but have since settled in Australia, are known for documenting their adventures and health advice on their Instagram page, @celtsontheroad.
In a recent video, which has since amassed over 24 million views, the couple claimed tourists can enjoy local food safely by taking a number of key precautions.
They said: 'If you travel or speak to any travellers for a lengthy period of time, then the topic of traveller's diarrhoea will no doubt come up.
'You'll hear horror stories of travellers trying new foods only to spend the next week feverish and exploding out of both ends.'
'We're both doctors and we've travelled to over 41 countries combined. We eat local food everywhere we go, and we rarely get sick.'
The pair claimed holidaymakers often tend to 'avoid local food, ice, salads, meat and fish,' while abroad, but they've insisted that it all boils down to implementing four crucial habits in hand hygiene to minimise the risk of getting traveller's diarrhoea.
First, the couple highlighted putting trust into the locals, urging travellers to choose busy food spots with lots of local customers, which often signals good hygiene and fresh food.
Next, they advised tourists to wash they hands before every meal, which is a simple yet effective way to prevent ingesting harmful bacteria.
Their third tip is to avoid touching phones or money while eating, as phones and cash can carry germs that easily transfer to your food.
Lastly, the pair stressed the importance of carrying antibacterial gel, as it can be used when soap and water are not available, especially in remote areas.
They concluded: 'Don't be frightened by some old wives tales. Wash your hands, eat local and savour the experiences! Ps if you do get sick, probably best to see a doctor.'
But the couple warned holidaymakers to be aware that there's 'always a risk of getting unlucky with unhygienically prepared food' and to bear in mind their advice regarding hand hygiene will not prevent other unrelated illness during a trip.
In the comments, viewers expressed mixed reactions to the advice, as one person shared: 'Love that you had different advice on this! I also love eating locally and have yet to get seriously sick!'

Another wrote: 'I do the same! Also I eat in crowded places and I take probiotics just in case - I have sensitive intestine - and guess what. I have never been sick before.'
A third commented: 'I was raised with lots of traveling and was always taught: eat at busy places and don't eat the most expensive items off the menu.
'These aren't chosen often, but have expensive products in them. The restaurant will save these ingredients as long as possible, so they're more likely to go bad.'
However, one person warned: 'Note they said RARELY get sick, not NEVER get sick. Hand hygiene can only go so far when you're immune system is being exposed to a new immunizer. Sometimes that's just the way it is.'
It comes as two gut experts revealed the essential two foods travellers must eat on every holiday to avoid 'travel tummy.'
Many people get sick while travelling the world for a variety of reasons, including dehydration and changes in diet.
But don't fear, as twins Lisa and Alana McFarlane, who created The Gut Stuff, are on hand with expert advice.
From the snack you must pack in your suitcase to the food that can cure constipation, here are Alana and Lisa's tips for how to avoid running to the toilet instead of the all-inclusive buffet on your next trip abroad.

'I'm riding 1,000 miles to get to Glastonbury - people think I'm crazy'

One festivalgoer has taken his journey to Glastonbury to all new lengths as he's been cycling 100km a day for almost a month in a bid to get to Worthy Farm from Madrid, Spain The countdown to Glastonbury is fast approaching, with mere days to go before hundreds of thousands of festivalgoers pitch up their tents for five days of spectacular performances. While many will be travelling by car, train or coach, one man is so dedicated to the UK's biggest festival that he's riding a whopping 100km a day on his bike to get there! Ollie White, 25, started his lengthy journey at the end of May from Madrid, Spain, where he lives and works as a content creator for La Liga, the Spanish football league. Over the course of almost a month, he has ventured across majestic mountains, the biggest sand dune in Europe, serene coastlines and desert-like landscapes with just a backpack, a tent and his bicycle. ‌ In total, Ollie will travel over 1,600km, or 994 miles, to Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset, racking up 62 miles a day. ‌ With just a few days to go until the gates open at Glastonbury on Wednesday, 25 June, at 8 am, Ollie has almost completed his trek and has been documenting his journey on TikTok and Instagram every day. In his most recent update on Sunday, 22 June, Ollie confirmed that he reached Plymouth before heading to Totnes, Devon, where he'd stay the night. He is hoping to reach Glastonbury by Tuesday, 24 June. When asked by the BBC why he opted to ride from Madrid to Worthy Farm, he simply said: "I have a ticket for Glastonbury, so why not cycle?" Speaking further about his experience, he also shared with the news outlet: "A lot of people think I'm crazy for doing this, but for me it doesn't seem too crazy. "It's just a challenge I've set myself and, at the end of the day, once you've done all the preparation, you just have to get on the bike each day and do the kilometres." ‌ He described his adventure as "absolutely incredible" and that "everything has been really positive". He's spent time camping alone in secluded, yet beautiful spots across Europe and the UK, while taking in nature and the incredible scenery during each leg of his journey. When he finally reaches his end location, Ollie has a list of performances lined up to watch during the weekend at Glastonbury, including Neil Young, Loyle Carner, Kneecap, Caribou, Scissor Sisters and Kaiser Chiefs. He adds that Neil Young has been a particularly good soundtrack while riding through endless countries.

He lifts up another poolside chair and proceeds to slam it down into his victim's bald head. A group of lifeguards and security attempt to intervene, but their efforts amount to nothing as the chair-hurling man seemingly ignores them. The two hurt holidaymakers then stay in the pool surrounded by foes, while their opposition continue to shout at and taunt them. One of the men is even seen mocking the victims as he dances by the side of the pool. A seemingly ironic sign, which reads "Good Vibes Only", can be seen by the side of the pool. Moment topless, beer-swilling teens erupt in fistfight behind beach huts in days of seaside yob chaos Online users pointed this out when watching the chaotic clip, with one user saying: "Good vibes only sign does it for me." The account that posted the viral video captioned the brawl: "The chaos was temporary. The memories? Permanent." Other viewers seemed to find the mayhem absolutely hilarious, and heavy speculation suggested the men were all British. One user commented: "Can smell the Stella, Joop and British passports from here." Another said: "Typical British behaviour." But some viewers were outraged by the fight. One account said: "Doesn't look like good fun happening there. Looks too intimidating and aggressive. No thanks." While another said: "Embarrassingly British." It is unclear if the men were British nationals, and the hotel have not commented on the brawl which left one woman lying on the floor. In 2022, two people ended up in the sea when a mass brawl erupted in Ibiza after Brits were reportedly banned from a party boat. The fight saw brawlers punching each other and rubbish bins being used as weapons in the popular resort of San Antonio. The chair-throwing fight also comes after an EasyJet passenger on board a flight to Ibiza was left petrified after a group of rowdy "drunk" Brits turned her journey into a "nightclub". Furious Spaniard Erika Barrachina claimed she suffered a "panic attack" after having to cope with "scum" passengers. The Ibiza resident blasted that these type of tourists should never have been allowed to board the plane in the first place. Shocking footage showed a packed plane with passengers appearing to bang on luggage compartments and yell: "Come on Ibiza!"

Liberty Poole shared terrifying hot air balloon ordeal before fatal Brazil crash

Former Love Island star Liberty Poole shared her concerns about taking hot air balloon trips, revealing she was unsure about the level of safety she experienced when she previously took to the air Love Island star Liberty Poole warned of the dangers of hot air balloon rides amid the tragic deaths of at least eight when such a floating aircraft became engulfed in flames in Brasil this week. Reality star Liberty, 25, had taken to the air herself recently, but did not enjoy the trip. Taking to social media, including via TikTok and Instagram, the former Love Island contestant shared footage and insights from her experience. She captioned her video, writing: "Social media Vs reality: Hot Air Balloon edition." ‌ The clips showed her looking comfortable while up in the air, fanning herself and at ease. The footage then cut to a clip of the star screaming shouting out in fear alongside others as they returned to the ground with a thud and they were forced to assume the brace position. ‌ Liberty also wrote in a caption: "The unexpected... I ticked it off my bucket list but think it's going to be a one time only thing lol." In further footage, Liberty shared further insight into her experience where she outlined an apparent lack of safety for her trip. Warning that she did not have a relaxing time, she revealed: "I didn't realise when you actually get into a hot air balloon, it's not upright." Giving a detailed description of what she went through, she continued: "You lay on the floor to get in. So you're actually not strapped in. Nothing. You have this tiny bit of rope to hold. "And as the hot air balloon goes up, the basket just sits up. But as you come down, you have to go the other way." Her description was interspliced with footage of her going up in the air and returning to earth. She revealed: "So we were told to basically just hold on to this rope and sit and crouch down to land." ‌ Going on to suggest she may not have had the safest overall experience, she added: "However, I don't know if that landing was normal." Liberty's account of her experience has drawn attention from fans over the weekend as a hot air balloon in Brasil caught fire while in the air. Horrifying footage went viral showing the giant balloon becoming engulfed in flames before plunging to the ground along with the basket full of visitors. ‌ Reports revealed that at least eight people died and 13 others were injured in the horror incident. The crash took place in Santa Catarina on Saturday and it was confirmed 21 people were on board including the pilot. Jorginho Mello, the Governor of Santa Catarina, shared his shock over the incident in a video that was posted on X following the disaster. He said: "We are in mourning. A tragedy has happened. We will see how it unfolds, what happened, why it happened. But the important thing now is for the state structure to do what it can."
