SABAK BERNAM : The unplanned construction of houses and village developments is among the critical challenges faced by the Selangor government in tackling flood problems, according to executive councillor Izham Hashim.
He said recent data indicated several villages urgently need flood mitigation measures. 'The state government will take a more aggressive approach. We will proceed with building major drains or water gates if there are no other options,' he said.
Izham Hashim.
'We cannot hesitate in making decisions that help people deal with this problem. We cannot wait any longer because the people are suffering severe consequences, made worse by increasingly unpredictable weather patterns,' he told reporters here today.
Izham said he would also visit several flood-prone hotspots in Klang on Monday to get a clearer picture of the flood mitigation plans. The visit would involve various related agencies, including the public works department, drainage and irrigation department, and the local authorities.
'While major projects are being completed, I'll go to the ground and check each site before coordinating and implementing early action,' he added.
On April 24, the state government approved 11 urgent flood mitigation measures in critical areas statewide, including Taman Sri Muda, Meru and Taman Seri Alam, which frequently experience flooding.

Hot weather prompts Johor to ease uniform rules for religious school students, says state exco
BATU PAHAT, June 22 — In view of the current hot weather, the Johor government has eased the dress code for students at Islamic religious schools to ensure their comfort throughout learning sessions. Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said there were no issues regarding the implementation, as the state government had authorised the District Islamic Education Office (PPID) to determine the appropriate attire. He said similar measures had been implemented before and could be reintroduced when necessary. 'In Johor, students are required to wear baju Melayu, so having looser clothing makes it more practical, especially during the current weather,' he said after closing the Johor State-Level Mahabbah Komuniti Madani Carnival at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) today. On the programme, Mohd Fared said it was a strategic collaboration among various parties aimed at reaching out to the community, particularly the youth, to provide a clearer understanding of increasingly complex social and religious issues. — Bernama

Black liquid from Johor oil store fire seeps into drains, may reach Straits of Tebrau, warns city council
JOHOR BARU, June 22 — A black liquid, believed to be engine oil, has been detected flowing from the site of a fire involving a storage facility for lorries and engine oil at Jalan Cenderai in Taman Kota Puteri, Masai. Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said the substance has been seen entering a drainage system and is feared to be heading toward the Straits of Tebrau. To prevent further environmental contamination, MBJB, along with multiple government agencies, has initiated immediate containment efforts. 'We are digging containment ponds at the site to block the flow of the liquid,' he said during a visit to the scene earlier today. Meanwhile, the Johor Department of Environment (DOE) will install oil booms in the drains and nearby areas to contain the spread. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Marine Department of Malaysia have also been deployed to the upper Straits of Tebrau to set up coastal booms to prevent the liquid from reaching open waters. 'The fastest containment step for now is to create these ponds on-site to stop the flow,' Datuk Haffiz added. The DOE will also be collecting samples to determine the exact composition of the substance. Earlier observations by Bernama reporters noted that the dark liquid, which emitted a strong and unpleasant odour, had seeped from the burned-out facility. The incident drew attention from members of the public, who began gathering at the scene as early as this morning. According to the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre, an emergency call was received at 12.54pm. A total of 34 personnel from multiple fire stations, including volunteer teams, were dispatched to tackle the blaze. — Bernama
