Rohit Sharma's cold-blooded response to young kid's childlike query; cheeky message to IPL opponents: ‘Nahi ho sakta'

Hindustan Times01-06-2025

Former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is focused on helping his team win their sixth IPL trophy on the field, but off it, he remains a jovial character. The swashbuckling opener has already played a pivotal role in the Mumbai Indians' qualification for the playoffs, and he is in no mood to stop before lifting another trophy.
A short clip went viral on social media ahead of the MI's qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings, where Rohit can be seen spending time with some young kids off the field.
The star batter shared a lighthearted moment with a young fan. When the child asked, "Sir aapko kaise out karne ka? (Sir how to get you out?)," Rohit humorously replied, "Nahi wo nahi ho sakta" ("No, that cannot happen"). It could be a cheeky message for his opponents in the tournament.
This playful exchange occurred as Rohit, dressed in his MI kit, interacted with young fans wearing team jerseys. The video of this interaction quickly gained attention on social media.
Meanwhile, Rohit had a mixed season before the playoffs. He started the season underwhelming, and started picking up form in the second half. He turned up big in the eliminator against Gujarat Titans with a stellar performance with the bat, scoring 81 runs off 50 balls, contributing to MI's total of 228/5. His innings, featuring nine boundaries and four sixes, earned him the Player of the Match award and helped MI secure a 20-run victory to set up qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings.
He was thrilled to play a pivotal role in Mumbai Indians' crucial win in the IPL Eliminator, though he admitted he would have liked to notch up more half-centuries than the four he has managed so far this season.
'I've got only four fifties (this IPL season). I think I would have liked to get more. I do understand the importance of playing the Eliminator and it was a complete team performance,' said Rohit during the post-match presentation.
He has also found a new opening partner in Jonny Bairstow for the playoffs after Ryan Rickelton left for South Africa for World Test Championship preparations. Rohit and Bairstow didn't waste any time to show strong signs of a solid opening pair with an 84-run stand versus the Titans.
'I've watched Bairstow over the years from the other side. We know what he can do upfront with the bat. He took his chances, and it came off. We always look for that kind of start,' said Rohit.

"He Worked On Certain Things...": India Batting Coach's Big Praise For Shubman Gill

Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak praised India test skipper Shubman Gill after his majestic hundred on captaincy debut against England on Saturday, in the first of five test match series at Headingley, Leeds. He said Gill had made specific changes in his batting, credited him with analysing what he needed to do, and felt he did really well. Sitanshu Kotak, while speaking in the post-match press conference, said, "I think, after the Australia series, he [Shubman Gill] has thought of certain things, which he has implemented, after Australia, Champions Trophy, and then we had IPL. He worked on certain things, and as soon as I saw him in the nets, I spoke to him about the changes you made, and he said yes. So a lot of credit goes to him for analysing what he needs to do, and I think he did really well." India were bowled out for 471 in 113 overs in the first innings, with captain Shubman Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal all crossing the century milestone. Gill scored his century in 140 balls, making him the fifth Indian to have scored a century in his first Test as captain. He was dismissed on 147, trying to hit a six and complete his 150, but he was caught on square leg off Shoaib Bashir. Kotak also praised Pant for his brilliance in the middle. He felt the wicketkeeper/batter makes his decision when he bats and he plays aggressive shots, which does not mean that he can't play defensive cricket. "Rishabh Pant, I think, is someone who makes his own plans, makes his decision when he bats, so this inning was a little different than you would see him normally, but that is his plan, the way he wanted to approach it, and when he wanted to attack, he did. So, because he plays aggressively, it does not mean that he can't play defensively," he added. Pant was eventually dismissed on the second ball of the 108th over for 134 by Josh Tongue. India squandered the advantage in the first session on Day 2 as the side lost four wickets in the last half an hour. Shubman Gill (147), Karun Nair (0), Rishabh Pant (134) and Shardul Thakur (1) all lost their wickets. A century by Ollie Pope and his partnership with Ben Duckett helped England put up a strong reply against India in their first innings, ending the final session of day two of the first Test on a high. England earlier made a strong comeback, dismissing India for 471 after the visitors had ended the day yesterday on 359 for three and looked poised for a huge score. At the end of the second day's play, England were 209/3, with Pope (100*) and Harry Brook (0*) unbeaten. They trail by 262 runs.

BCCI To Impose Strict Rules After RCB Stampede: 'No Events Without Prior OK'

Last Updated: BCCI is enforcing strict guidelines for IPL trophy parades after the Bengaluru stampede that killed 11. Celebrations need prior clearance and multi-layered security. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in the process of implementing strict guidelines for IPL trophy parades and celebrations in the wake of the Bengaluru stampede that took the lives of 11 people and left several others injured last month. Thousands had gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)'s maiden title win, just hours after they beat Punjab Kings in the final. Multiple events being held at the same time, and a lack of infrastructural readiness, led to one of India's biggest sporting disasters this century. The BCCI had initially distanced itself from the tragedy, saying it had no role in it, and then formed a three-member committee led by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, with vice-president Rajeev Shukla and treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia as members. India Today quoted Saikia as saying that the board was 'taking every aspect of risk very seriously to avoid any future mishaps.' The report included a list of guidelines that, according to Saikia, would now be mandatory for all IPL franchises wanting to celebrate a win. These disbar teams from holding celebrations within three to four days of winning the title, and strictly prohibit quick turnarounds or rushed celebrations. All events will now require prior and written clearance from the BCCI, and formal approval from district police, state governments, and local civic authorities. Further, teams will have to ensure multi-layered security at all venues and during the transit of players and staff, with coverage spanning from the airport to the event venue. The Karnataka government has already proposed a new crowd management bill, which holds event managers responsible and imposes fines and upto three years of imprisonment. 'Four bills were proposed today — Karnataka crowd control, managing crowd at events and venue of mass gathering Bill, 2025; Karnataka Rohith Vemula Bill, 2025; Karnataka misinformation, fake news prohibition Bill, 2025; Karnataka hate speech and hate crimes prevention Bill, 2025," Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil told reporters on June 19. 'These Bills were proposed at the meeting today. I mentioned that on some Bills there is a need for a detailed discussion. It has been decided that before the next cabinet meeting, concerned ministers will meet and discuss and bring the Bills before the cabinet," he added.
