New 'dream' train route could finally connect two major UK cities

New railway plans could see trains running from Brighton to Newcastle, connecting England's north-east with the south coast.
Arriva's Grand Central could soon launch the first direct route via London Gatwick — bypassing the rest of the capital and bringing an end to changing trains.
The train operator has submitted a bid to Network Rail, and is currently waiting for approval.
If it gets the green light, five trains will run daily in each direction, with stops at Birmingham, Oxford and Surrey, starting in December 2026.
The new route would allow travellers to get from one end of the country to the other without switching at King's Cross or Victoria stations in London.

Each train would have capacity for 300 passengers, including luggage space for airport travellers, as well as on-board catering, Wi-Fi and charging points.
Grand Central currently runs services connecting Sunderland and Bradford with London King's Cross, but it seems its new route proposal would answer the prayers of many.
On social media, people have hailed the plans as 'brilliant' and 'amazing', saying they are 'all for it'.
One person said: 'For about five years I regularly travelled from Birmingham to Brighton and back via London… This route would have been a dream.'

No, I don't travel that way
One commuter said their recent journey from Brighton to Newcastle had taken 11 hours, having to take the Gatwick Express to London and then switch to a Megabus to save money. They added: 'Yes, this would be welcome.'
But some are concerned about the cost of train travel, saying the new route would likely 'cost a kidney' or more than £100. More Trending
Prices are yet to be revealed, but given the journey time from Brighton to Newcastle currently averages four hours and 20 minutes, and a nearly four hour journey one way with Grand Central costs about £66, you can get a rough idea.
Paul Hutchings, managing director of Arriva UK Trains' Rail Services, said the company is 'committed to connecting communities' and enabling 'convenient and sustainable travel'.
Gatwick Airport's chief commercial officer is hopeful the new route would encourage passengers to use public transport.
If the court of public opinion is anything to go by, it sounds promising.
Wales' answer to London's Tube has been in the works since 2013 – and more than 10 years on, 2026 looks set to be the year it all comes together.
Costing a whopping £1,000,000,000, the project is set to span 170 kilometres (105.6 miles) worth of track, introducing 36 tram-style trains across Cardiff and the wider South Wales area.
There'll be six core lines connecting the Welsh capital to the likes of Aberdare, Coryton, Merthyr, Tydfil, Rhymney and Treherbert – with all the stops along the way identified by a colour-coded map.
The connections are set to be introduced in stages, but the project has already introduced brand-new trains across sections of the South Wales network, improved accessibility by installing extra lifts and access-for-all bridges, installed bike hoops, and added extra passenger information screens to make it easier for commuters to find their train.
While the project has largely been dubbed the 'Welsh Tube,' the majority of the network is overground, with the exception of a few tunnels between the Cardiff and Caerphilly connection.

A controversial multi-million pound apartment development in Deganwy has been approved by Conwy Council's planning committee - despite objections from residents and concerns raised by several councillors. Planning officers had recommended approval for the plans, which will see a new 19-flat apartment building constructed on the corner of Station Road, York Road, and Back York Road. The application, submitted by Simon Garantini, involves demolishing the existing buildings at 1–3 Station Road to make way for the new development. The proposed building will measure 15.80 metres in height, 38.81 metres in width, and 27.08 metres in depth. The site is currently occupied by Robertson Geologging Ltd and is located opposite the Grade-II listed former Deganwy Castle Hotel in a predominantly residential area with some nearby commercial properties. Conwy 's planning department received 15 objections from members of the public, with concerns raised over the height of the proposed building, its impact on the character of the area, and a perceived lack of parking. Several councillors objected to the development, arguing the applicant needed to provide affordable housing or make a financial contribution to the community. Cllr David Carr suggested the flats would be unaffordable to most locals, would not help the council's housing problem, and would likely end up as holiday homes. But planning officers advised the committee affordable housing was "unviable" at the site due to market value and explained that consequently a 106 agreement in the form of community contributions was not viable either in an area that was repeatedly described at the meeting as 'affluent'. Cllr Anthony Bertola spoke in favour of the application. "I'm looking at the positive side of this, because Deganwy is an affluent area,' he said. 'There are lots of businesses there that could do with the footfall. It'll be good for tourism. It'll be good for homes. I know we are looking at the Welsh language and affordable housing - I get that - but I think there is an opportunity here, because it is a bit of an eyesore, the area as it is, anyway, so anything that is going to be upgraded, I'm all for it, and I know Deganwy is a nice area anyway.' He added: 'I'm looking at the positive side of it, but I understand people's feelings about contributions and the Welsh language, but I can't really see how that's going to affect the fact we're getting something that is quite attractively designed architecturally and is in keeping with the area.' Cllr Bertola proposed councillors voted in favour of the proposal, and this was seconded by Cllr Kay Redhead. Nine councillors voted in favour of the planning application with two against and two abstentions.

The 'Meet the Buyer' event took place at Penallta Rugby Club hosted by Bute Energy, the developer behind the Twyn Hywel Energy Park in Caerphilly. The event connected businesses and charities from Caerphilly, Rhondda, and Gwent with Bute Energy's shortlisted civil engineering contractors, giving them a chance to pitch services for the multi-million pound onshore wind project. Catryn Newton, community investment and communications director at Bute Energy, said: "At Bute Energy, we're doing everything possible to unlock every single opportunity our investment in onshore wind provides for the benefit of local people, businesses, and services. "The success of the event shows the strength of the local supply chain here in Caerphilly and RCT and is proof of the interest in the opportunities to contribute towards Wales' journey towards clean energy. "Our thanks goes to the 70 businesses and services who joined us in Ystrad Mynach." The Twyn Hywel Energy Park is the first of Bute Energy's developments to receive planning consent and includes 14 wind turbines. Once operational, the site is expected to generate enough electricity to power 81,000 homes by 2027. It will also create hundreds of jobs both directly and through the wider supply chain. The project includes a community investment fund of nearly £700,000 per year for 40 years. Matthew Tucker, chair of Caerphilly Business Club, said: 'Twyn Hywel Energy Park is an exciting new development for Caerphilly and south east Wales. "Investment in renewable energy represents a huge opportunity for local business, and developers like Bute Energy have an opportunity to transform future prospects for Welsh business. 'The attendance at the event shows the opportunities available for businesses – whether that's catering, security, transport and logistics, accommodation or equipment hire, there are countless opportunities that can help grow and diversity opportunities for local businesses.'
