Chelsea star makes surprise Club World Cup claim after falling to defeat

Chelsea winger Pedro Neto says he is "thankful" to be playing at the Club World Cup instead of enjoying a post-season break, with the Blues having now played two games at the tournament
Pedro Neto insists he would far rather be at the Club World Cup than sunning himself on the beach. The 32 team tournament in the United States has taken a lot of criticism largely because it means Premier League and other European stars will not get much of a summer break.
Chelsea have had a mixed start to their campaign after beating Los Angeles FC but then losing their second game to Flamengo when they also had Nicolas Jackson sent off. They must now face Club Tunis in their final Group match to guarantee their path into the knock-out stages but Chelsea winger Neto says he would not swap the Club World Cup for a holiday.

'We have to be thankful. We are here playing this tournament,' said Neto who was then asked whether he would rather be in the US rather than the beach. 'I'm 100 percent sure.

'We have to enjoy it. There would be a lot of players that would love to be in my place, We are always confident. We are Chelsea, we play to win and we have an unbelievable team.'
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella was brutally honest about their mistakes against Flamengo - and admitted they have been making them all season. Cucurella said: 'We need to have more passing, control better the situations and not concede another easy goal similar to the first one.
'It's true that these things happened a lot of times last season in the Premier League but we are here to learn, to see the clips to see where we can improve and then do better in the next game.
'But we can still go through and maybe we can learn from this and that's it. I think if I remember in the last ten games we played, we had a lot of clean sheets so we are doing better in this aspect.
'But Flamengo also have a good team and they are in the middle of the season and physically did better than us in this moment. They also played in the heat and maybe these things we can control better in this moment and we can learn but it's better it happens now in these stages rather than in the later rounds.'
Flamengo have now beaten Chelsea and Botafogo also upset pre-tournament favourites Paris Saint Germain. It would be a surprise if a Brazilian team won it but Cucurella insists they have the advantage of just starting their season and the Spain defender insisted that the Premier League is still the best in the world.

He added: 'I think the Premier League is the best league in the world but it's true that it can be very different from one team to another and it's not only this game, you can see the other results and the momentum they have is different to European teams.
'The conditions are not the same as well for European teams and it's not an excuse, it's a reality and it's one of the reasons. Flamengo have a lot of talent but if we play in another moment then we can maybe beat them.
'Maybe now is the moment to lose and if you are going to lose then it's now and if we go through that is the moment to show our qualities.'

John Stones reflects on ‘dark days' during recent injury setbacks

John Stones admits there were times he doubted if his career would resume amid a series of injury problems over the past two years. The Manchester City and England centre-back made only six Premier League starts in the 2024-25 season after thigh, foot and other undisclosed issues. I put a lot of pressure on myself. I find it very challenging mentally. 'I have had some very low points in the past season. I just have to (try to) come back but, once you come over those things, you can't really see the end of the tunnel when they keep happening. 'All of us have been through different upbringings and challenges through life and what did we do within those situations – was it fight or was it give up? 'I was a fighter from a young age. In difficult moments, you have to look at the bigger picture and realise what your morals are, what you believe in, and fight to make it worthwhile.' Stones has now battled his way back to fitness and is hoping to play a big part in City's challenge at the Club World Cup in the United States. He has not featured since February when he was forced off after just eight minutes against Real Madrid. He was an unused substitute in their opening game of the tournament against Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday. Speaking to media ahead of their second game against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi in Atlanta, Stones said he was 'raring' to go. He said: 'I feel great, I'm back fit and ready to help the team when called upon. I'm excited to get going. 'Mentally it's been difficult dealing with the injuries and the process, but now I've put that behind me. 'I've been back in training a few weeks now and that's been going great. I'm super excited.' Manager Pep Guardiola is pleased to have Stones back in contention but will ease him back into action. Guardiola said: 'Him playing football, I want that. We have been together for almost one decade and he's an incredible human being. 'But the important thing now is at training sessions, he feels better. Games are another issue, another rhythm.'

Manchester City cult hero now worth £20million after unexpected career change

History-making Chinese footballer Sun Jihai, who spent six years at Manchester City, has enjoyed great success in the world of business since hanging up his boots A Manchester City cult hero is now worth a staggering £20million following a surprise career change. Sun Jihai made history several times during his six-year City career after becoming the first player from China to grace the Premier League. Jihai joined City, then managed by Kevin Keegan and on course to win promotion from the second tier, in February 2002. Later that year, he became the first East Asian player to score in the English top flight in a 2-0 win at Birmingham City. ‌ He became a firm favourite among fans due to his tireless work-rate, making 151 appearances for City before leaving in the summer of 2008 as the club was taken over by Sheikh Mansour. His last game in City colours was the infamous 8-1 defeat at Middlesbrough at the end of the 2007/08 campaign. ‌ A brief spell at Sheffield United followed before he returned to his homeland in 2009, playing for several clubs and hanging up his boots in 2016. He elected not to pursue the tried-and-tested route of coaching and potentially management. Instead, Jihai became a successful businessman, co-founding HaiQui [HQ] Sports, a sports data company, which set out to provide 'datatainment' to fans. The tech company's other projects included a talk show that Jihai appeared on, a sports app called MiaoHi and a match prediction tool called Jihai App. Jihai made a great success of the venture, with numerous blue-chip companies investing in the company, including China Media Capital [CMC], which bought a 13% stake in City in 2015. CMC, worth an estimated £60billion, got involved after being impressed by the MiaoHi app, a short-video sports platform that connects celebrities and fans. That investment, coupled with growing interest in his products, has seen Jihai's personal wealth soar to more than £20m, according to PeopleWorthWiki. Despite his personal success story post-football, Jihai looks back on his spell with City fondly. Speaking to former team-mates Nedum Onuoha and Paul Dickov for City's website last year, he said his historic goal at Birmingham still gives him 'goosebumps.' ‌ 'Before I came to City, I didn't know the club. I only knew about United,' admitted Jihai, who spent the 1998/99 season at Crystal Palace, then of the second tier. 'City were in the second division, now the Championship. The agent told me we will go to the Premier League very soon. There were only two months of the season left. I was thinking, 'OK, second division, no problem, I'll join then.' 'I spent a season at Crystal Palace and I was always thinking I would like to go back to England. The Premier League, that was the league I wanted to play in.'
