Doncaster downhill skateboarder eyes world championship glory
A man who only took up downhill skateboarding two years ago has said he would give it his "best shot" after being selected to compete in the extreme sport's world championships.Phil Spencer, from Doncaster, said he aimed to tackle the slopes of Erzincan, Turkey, in the World Downhill Skateboarding Championship at the weekend.Mr Spencer said the route, which covered 1.9 miles (3km), with an average incline of 12.5%, would take just over two minutes to complete."I'm just a normal guy from Doncaster. I work in a car dealership, just lead a normal life - but I like to go fast on hills," he explained.
Mr Spencer said he had been a skateboarder for nearly all his life, but he had only discovered downhill skateboarding while looking on social media two years ago.He said that after finding out more, he thought: "I fancy a crack at that."
Mr Spencer said he now trained in the gym after work every day and practised most weekends in the Peak District.He said he reached speeds of up to 77mph (124km/h) riding down hills on his skateboard, without any means of braking."It's such a buzz, it makes you feel alive," he said."It's the walk back up that finishes you off."Mr Spencer added that he thought "life is too short" to be scared of trying such sports.Getting ready for the world championships in just a few days time, he said: "I would love to be stood on the podium."However, he said he would remain realistic about his chances."There are some real fast guys, so I'll just go and give it my best shot."

Japan's Sakamoto to retire after 2026 Winter Olympics
June 20 (Reuters) - Three-times world figure skating champion Kaori Sakamoto is to retire after the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics next year, the Japanese 25-year-old told reporters in Kobe on Friday. Sakamoto became the first woman in 56 years to win the figure skating world singles title three times in a row last year, matching the feat of American Peggy Fleming, who won three world titles between 1966-68. "I feel like I have less than a year left. I'll be 29 at the following Olympics, which is out of the question," Kyodo news reported Sakamoto as saying. "I'll try to bring things to a close the year I turn 26." Sakamoto, who won bronze at the 2022 Winter Olympics, missed out on a fourth straight world title in March when she finished runner-up to American Alysa Liu.

Partey's contract talks with Arsenal hit impasse but Lewis-Skelly poised to sign
Thomas Partey is at an impasse with Arsenal in talks over a new contract as the midfielder weighs up whether to extend his stay. It is understood that Partey, whose deal expires at the end of this month, has been offered a deal on slightly reduced terms. The 32-year-old and his representatives are believed to want a similar pay structure to the one in the contract he signed when he joined from Atlético Madrid in 2020 for £45m, after he played an integral role last season, making 52 appearances. Partey is believed to have offers from Turkey and has been linked with Barcelona in recent weeks. Despite the impending arrival from Real Sociedad of Martín Zubimendi, who would provide direct competition for the Ghana international's starting spot, Partey is thought to prefer to stay.
