Delhi: Slum dwellers in search of a new home after 300 shanties razed in Ashok Vihar
'How can 10 people stay in a one-bedroom flat?' asked Raj, 20, sharing his plight as he carried a gas cylinder in one hand and a bag with clothes in another. His jhuggi was one of the 300 slums demolished on Monday at Jailorwala Bagh in Northwest Delhi's Ashok Vihar by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). 'My parents, my brother, and I are moving into a flat nearby where a family we know is already staying, but we will have to look for a place to stay tomorrow,' he said while rushing to make arrangements. A school dropout, he makes cloth labels at a nearby warehouse.
Many in the area, who have been displaced, have decided to move to nearby areas with affordable accommodations like Wazirpur, Jahangirpuri, Azadpur, and Lal Bagh. 'But even rents in these places have been increased by landlords, seeing that hundreds of people are looking for a house,' said Suraj Kumar (32), a local. 'The monthly rent for a flat I was looking at was Rs 3,500. Now, the landlord has increased it to Rs 4,500,' added Kumar, who works as a delivery partner with a food delivery firm.
The demolition comes five months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over keys of flats in the Swabhiman Apartments, located right behind the slum cluster, to residents of the Jailorwala Bagh for relocation under the Capital's 2015 slum rehabilitation policy.
According to DDA, 1,078 families were eligible for rehabilitation in the Swabhiman Apartments, while 558 were ineligible to get a flat. 'The demolition has been carried out on June 16 of the jhuggi structures where dwellers have been allotted flats and of the ineligible persons, except those who have been granted stay by the Delhi High Court,' an official statement read.
On the Swabhiman Apartments, DDA said, 'The project is located on DDA's land measuring 34,594.74 sqm with a total construction cost of Rs. 421 crore, excluding land cost. The eligible dwellers have been comfortably living in these flats, which have all modern civic facilities. Each flat with a carpet area of 31 sqm consists of 1 living room, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, a kitchen, and a balcony. The construction cost of each flat is Rs 25 lakh. These flats have been given at a highly subsidised beneficiary contribution of Rs 1.41 lakh.'
To qualify for a flat, slum dwellers were required to prove that they have been living in the jhuggis since 2015 by showing their name in voter lists and possessing any one of the 12 documents (like electricity bill, driving license, among others) prescribed in the policy. Of the 558 ineligible dwellers, the Delhi High Court granted a stay against demolition to about 250 households. The remaining shanties were demolished on Monday.
Mithun, who said he mobilised 250 slum dwellers to move to the High Court and get a stay, claimed that some of those shanties were also demolished on Monday. 'A survey was conducted by a third-party agency, which made a lot of errors,' he said. 'Even if DDA does not demolish our shanties, how will we stay in the middle of all this rubble? How will our children live in the midst of all this? The stay of the court means nothing now… we will have to move only,' said a woman sitting nearby.

Bengal may lose ₹25 cr GST as SBI shifts key unit from Kolkata to Mumbai
Kolkata faces a potential state GST loss of nearly Rs 25 crore this fiscal year as the State Bank of India (SBI) moves to relocate its Global Market Unit (GMU) from Kolkata to Mumbai, a civil society organisation has claimed. This proposed shift has drawn protests from civil society groups like Bank Bachao Desh Bachao Manch (Save Bank, Save Nation Platform), describing SBI's decision as "arbitrary and opaque". "The GMU and associated units contribute significantly to state revenues via GST, nearly Rs 25 crore this fiscal year. Additionally, over 70 contractual staff stand to lose their jobs," Bank Bachao Desh Bachao Manch joint convenors Biswaranjan Ray and Soumya Datta said in a complaint. The State Bank of India recently stated that decisions regarding the opening, shifting, or rationalisation of branches and offices are part of an ongoing business process based on evolving operational and administrative needs. This explanation was provided by the Deputy General Manager (Operations), SBI Corporate Centre, in a letter dated June 11, 2025, which responded to a previous complaint from Bank Bachao Desh Bachao Manch to the President of India in March. The Manch found SBI's reply to be "generic and bureaucratic", and "devoid of substance or justification". The group also noted that it neither addressed the core issues raised nor provided a rationale for the displacement of strategic banking operations. The Manch then complained to the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) under the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances. Protestors have highlighted several concerns beyond the potential GST loss, including the disregard of historical and legal commitments, specifically a 2008 agreement between the bank and its federations to retain the GMU (which evolved from the erstwhile Foreign Department) in Kolkata. The GMU's shifting is part of a "pattern of systemic marginalisation" of Kolkata's and West Bengal's institutional roles within India's banking landscape, the forum claimed. Telangana Dy CM emphasizes boosting non-tax revenue
Hyderabad, June 22 (UN) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who chairs the Infrastructure and Capital Sub-Committee, directed officials to give focused attention to increasing the state's non-tax revenue and optimising budgetary allocations. He made these remarks during a high-level review meeting held at the Dr B R Ambedkar Secretariat, attended by Ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy, Komatireddy Venkata Reddy, and senior officials. During the meeting, the Deputy CM emphasised that new welfare schemes worth Rs 33,600 crore are being implemented without halting existing schemes of the previous government. However, he pointed out that no revenue was received from Outer Ring Road or Excise during the 2023–24 financial year, highlighting the need to explore alternate revenue channels, especially non-tax sources and central funds. He instructed officials to rationalize departmental budgets, ensuring equitable distribution of funds. "Some departments are receiving more funds than needed, while others are underfunded. This imbalance must be corrected, and allocations should reflect actual needs and priorities," he stated. Bhatti Vikramarka also ordered the immediate completion of pending major infrastructure projects across all constituencies, stressing that rationalization and the completion of spillover works must be finalised within ten days. He underlined that revenue-generating sectors need special focus, and that all expenditures must be realistic, logical, and need-based. Calling on all departments to work with a public welfare mindset, the Deputy CM said that only balanced departmental development will ensure comprehensive growth for the state. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Finance Principal Secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania, and senior officials from various departments, an official statement said on Sunday. Maoists will not get respite even during monsoon: Home Minister Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday reiterated the government's resolve to eradicate Maoism by March 31 next year and announced that the rebels will not get a breather even during monsoon. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and Central Forensic Science Laboratory's Raipur campus, HM Shah said, 'Unlike pervious years, when the anti-Maoist operations used to get slowed down during monsoon, I want to assure the people that we will not let the rebels sleep even during rains.' The Home Minister also hailed Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and his deputy Vijay Sharma for sharpening the operations against Maoism in the state. 'They have encouraged police forces, and I congratulate the two on behalf of the Central government,' he said. HM Shah also appealed to the Maoists to surrender and join the mainstream by availing the state government's rehabilitation package. 'I assure all those rebels who have surrendered that the Centre and State government will fulfil their commitment to them,' he said. Earlier, he called upon Chhattisgarh youth to become adventurous in setting up enterprises and start-ups for bringing about a new wave of investment in the state. He highlighted the launch of 'Mind-to-Market' i-Hub incubation set-up in the state, claiming that it would hold the hands of startup launchers and nurture youth to become MSME owners. Crediting the creation of Chhattisgarh to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, HM Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for shaping the modern-day state. Addressing the inauguration event, the Home Minister said that Sunday marked a significant day as three key projects impacting the criminal justice system of the state were being launched. 'The foundation stone of NFSU and CFSL is being laid, along with the launch of the transit campus of the University in which 180 students will start their education in courses like and in cyber and forensic science, among others,' he said. 'I want the youth to trust PM Modi and understand that their degree from NFSU will be a guarantee for their job,' he said. The NFSU campus is proposed to be built at a cost of Rs 145 crore by the Centre, while the CFSL will be built at a cost of Rs 123 crore. HM Shah said PM Modi's vision for Viksit Bharat 2047 cannot be achieved without timely delivery of justice and the three new criminal laws -- Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, effective July 1, 2024 -- are a step in that direction. The setting up of a forensic university and lab is a step in the direction of timely justice and establishing an evidence-based criminal justice system in which verdict is delivered within three years, he said.
