Suspended Olympian says whipping horse 42 times in video was in its ‘best interest'
A former Australian Olympian has been provisionally suspended after video surfaced of the equestrian appearing to repeatedly whip a horse.

Heath Ryan, who competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, is under investigation by Equestrian Australia and has come out in defence of his actions as seen in the old clip – which seems to show the rider striking a horse 42 times.

In a lengthy post on Facebook, Ryan said that the incident shown in the video 'transpired sincerely with the (horse's) best interests the sole consideration.'

Equestrian Australia, the country's governing body for the sport, said that the provisional suspension will last until 'a thorough investigation of this matter' has been completed. It also noted that it had received a formal complaint about the incident.

'Equestrian Australia is extremely alarmed and concerned by the treatment of the horse shown in this footage,' it said in a statement.

'Equestrian Australia has this afternoon imposed a provisional suspension of this person's membership of Equestrian Australia and their rights, privileges and benefits associated with their membership.'

It also said that the body 'takes matters of animal welfare very seriously.'

In Ryan's Facebook post, he said that the horse named Nico was brought to him on the way to the 'knackery' — where animals go to be killed — after an accident had injured its owner.

The post describes the horse as a 'problem child' that got 'worse and worse until the accident.'

'I felt obliged to the horse to just have a look and see if it was possibly salvageable,' Ryan wrote. 'Well did I get a shock and so the video. I have never ridden anything like it. I am so sad this was caught on video.

'If I had been thinking of myself, I would have immediately just gotten off and sent Nico to the knackery. That video was a life-or-death moment for Nico and of that I was very aware.

'I felt I genuinely had to try my very hardest to see if Nico would consider other options. Anyway by the end of that initial ride I did feel Nico was responding. I rode Nico for another couple of days and he responded very well and started to go without the use of excessive driving aids.'

PWHL Seattle taps Steve O'Rourke as the expansion team's first coach
Steve O'Rourke was named coach of the PWHL Seattle expansion team on Friday. The move brings in a newcomer to women's hockey, but someone who is very familiar to the Pacific Northwest having played at Washington State. Kevin Durant buys minority stake in Paris Saint-Germain, partners with QSI
PARIS (AP) — NBA star Kevin Durant has purchased a minority stake in Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain, the French club said Friday. Qatar Sports Investments, PSG's majority shareholder, signed an investment and strategic partnership agreement with Durant, the club said in a statement. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. 'Under the terms of the partnership, Durant — via his media and investment company Boardroom, co-founded with long-time business partner Rich Kleiman — will acquire a direct minority stake in the club,' PSG's statement said. The 36-year-old Phoenix Suns forward is a two-time NBA champion and one of the league's elite shot makers. Durant became the first four-time men's gold medalist in Olympic basketball history when the U.S. took gold at last summer's Paris Olympics. 'It is an honor to partner with QSI and be a shareholder in Paris Saint-Germain — a club and city that is deeply close to my heart,' Durant said in comments provided by PSG. World Curling tightens sweeping rules, bans firmer broom foams ahead of Olympics
World Curling has tightened its sweeping equipment rules heading into the Olympic season. The move, announced Friday, follows concern over firmer broom foams that many players said gave sweepers too much control. Several high-profile models — including some from Goldline, BalancePlus and Hardline — are now banned. Only brushes with less-firm foam are approved for competition, effective immediately. World Curling said the decision followed extensive consultation with players, manufacturers and ice experts, as well as a sweep-testing exercise at the Morris Curling Club in Manitoba. Officials say it's a first step, with long-term reviews and equipment standards still in development. With the new regulations, the BalancePlus RS with Firm 2.0 foam, Goldline Impact with Evader or Pursuer foam, Hardline Ice Pad with Competitive foam, and SmartBroom by Curling Tools with current foam are no longer approved for play.
