PWHL Seattle taps Steve O'Rourke as the expansion team's first coach

Steve O'Rourke was named coach of the PWHL Seattle expansion team on Friday.
The move brings in a newcomer to women's hockey, but someone who is very familiar to the Pacific Northwest having played at Washington State.
'This is something I've thought about since the league was first announced,' O'Rourke said in a statement. 'To now be given the opportunity to work with the best players in the world and be part of a professional league that is thriving both on and off the ice is truly amazing. Being from the West and having played hockey in Washington State, I've seen first-hand how much the game has grown in this region. The passion and support for hockey here is real, and I'm proud to now be part of it in a new way.'
While the roster is still being constructed, O'Rourke will have the benefit of coaching a team featuring four-time Olympian Hilary Knight, who became the first player Seattle signed during the PWHL's expansion process two weeks ago.
'We're proud to welcome Steve as the first head coach in PWHL Seattle's history,' PWHL Seattle general manager Meghan Turner said in a statement. 'He brings a great hockey mind, a clear vision for the game, and a strong commitment to developing both our team and our players as individuals. We're confident in his leadership and excited to start this next chapter with him behind the bench.'
The 50-year-old O'Rourke comes in with 15 years of coaching experience, most recently having worked in the junior ranks with the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals. He was an assistant with the Generals for two years before being elevated to head coach for the 2024-25 season.
Seattle is already deep at forward, with Turner already envisioning her top two lines. Knight, who finished tied for the PWHL lead with 29 points last season, is also joined by two-time U.S. Olympian Alex Carpenter and Canada's Danielle Serdachny, who was selected by Ottawa as the No. 2 pick in last year's draft.
Seattle will participate in its first PWHL Draft on June 24, when it will make six picks, including the eighth overall selection.

Cal Raleigh breaks Johnny Bench's record for homers by a catcher before All-Star break

CHICAGO (AP) — Cal Raleigh broke Hall of Famer Johnny Bench's 1970 record for home runs by a catcher before the All-Star break, hitting his major league-leading 28th and 29th in the Seattle Mariners' 9-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday. Raleigh put Seattle ahead and moved past Bench in the seventh inning with No. 29, a drive to the back of the left-field bleachers off Caleb Thielbar. Raleigh sent his first homer just over the basket in the first off Matthew Boyd. Raleigh needed only 73 games to break the record that Bench set in 87 games. The Seattle star shattered the mark with 22 games to spare before the All-Star game. The 28-year-old slugger had three hits in his sixth multi-homer game of the season. He drove in three runs to push his season total to 63. PWHL's Victoire sign Downie-Landry and Flaherty, lose Grant-Mentis to Seattle

New York Sirens' Jade Downie-Landry (27) celebrates her goal against the Ottawa Charge with teammates during third-period PWHL hockey action in Ottawa on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean Kilpatrick The Montreal Victoire signed forward Jade Downie-Landry and defender Maggie Flaherty on Friday ahead of the upcoming Professional Women's Hockey League draft. Downie-Landry joins Montreal on a one-year contract after spending two seasons with the New York Sirens. The 29-year-old from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., has produced 12 goals and seven assists in 54 PWHL games. Flaherty, coming off back-to-back Walter Cup titles with the Minnesota Frost, also signed a one-year contract. The 25-year-old American joins Erin Ambrose, Kati Tabin, Amanda Boulier and recent signee Jessica DiGirolamo on the blue line after Montreal notably lost defenders Cayla Barnes and Anna Wilgren in the expansion process. Meanwhile, former Victoire forward Mikyla Grant-Mentis is leaving Montreal and joining PWHL Seattle on a two-year deal. The 26-year-old from Brampton, Ont., had three goals and five assists in 30 games last season. The PWHL draft takes place in Ottawa on Tuesday. Elsewhere in the league, the Toronto Sceptres signed defender Jess Kondas to a one-year contract. Kondas, a 25-year-old from Calgary, spent the past two seasons on Toronto's reserve player list. She made her PWHL debut — and only appearance — on Dec. 27, scoring a goal on her first shot. PWHL Vancouver signed restricted free agent Gabby Rosenthal to a one-year deal after the franchise acquired the forward's playing rights from New York in the expansion draft. The Ottawa Charge added former Sirens defender Brooke Hobson on a one-year contract. Rosenthal's playing rights were acquired by Vancouver when the team selected the New York Sirens forward with the ninth pick in the 2025 Expansion Draft. The Boston Fleet signed goaltender Abbey Levy as well as defenders Zoe Boyd and Rylind MacKinnon to one-year contracts. New York re-signed defender Lauren Bernard and forward Kayla Vespa, also on one-year deals. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 20, 2025.
