HC directs Tangedco to pay relief for electrocution deaths of man, son
Madurai: Madras high court has directed Tangedco authorities to pay a compensation of Rs10 lakh to a woman whose husband and son died after coming into contact with a live electric wire during Cyclone Gaja in Kodaikanal, Dindigul district.
The court was hearing the petition filed by Subulakshmi, a resident of Pethuparai village in Kodaikanal. The petitioner stated that her husband, Ravi, and her son, Raja Pandi, were agricultural labourers. On Dec 2, 2018, in the morning, when Pandi was drying his wet cloth on a clothesline in front of the house, a live electric wire came in contact with the clothesline. Pandi was electrocuted. When Ravi went to save Pandi, he also suffered electrocution and died.
The petitioner stated that due to Cyclone Gaja, there was no electricity supply for over 10 days. Without checking whether the lines were safe and proper, Tangedco authorities restored the connection, which resulted in the death of her husband and son.
Earlier, she filed a petition in 2019 seeking compensation. The state govt released an ex gratia of Rs2 lakh in 2021. Recording the same, the court closed the case. Stating that the incident happened due to the negligence of Tangedco, the petitioner filed the present petition in 2022.

Justice V Lakshminarayanan observed that Tangedco has evolved a scheme for payment of compensation to the survivors of electrocution victims. Under this scheme, a sum of Rs5 lakh is paid. Hence, the judge directed Tangedco to pay Rs10 lakh to the petitioner.

Motilal Gupta, a resident of Mittupur village under Pawai police station in Azamgarh, was running a large-scale operation of brewing counterfeit country liquor. The liquor, packaged with fake wrappers bearing names of reputed brands and filled in glass bottles, was sold extensively across nearby villages and districts. The illicit operation came under the scanner after a major tragedy on May 10, 2021, when several villagers from Singhora in Jaitpur consumed the toxic liquor. That evening, Amit Chauhan—a local resident—died, while others including Mahesh Chauhan, Jaisraj Chauhan, and Sonu Chaturvedi fell critically ill. Over the following days, Jaisraj Chauhan died on May 21, Ram Subhag Chauhan (a retired information officer), and residents Ravi (from Choudhaprash), Lallan Singh (from Sohagupur), and Shyam Singh (from Mahangipur, Katka) also succumbed. Sex harassment FIR lodged against sports head, HC told
Mumbai: The state on Friday informed Bombay high court that Kherwadi police station, Bandra East, registered an FIR against the president of a sports body on a complaint of sexual harassment by a woman athlete. The FIR followed Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale's direction on Wednesday to the police-in-charge to record her statement and "take appropriate action in accordance with the law, including registration of FIR, against Mr... and others found involved, if a cognisable offence is made out against them". The state's advocate, Vishal Thadani, informed that an FIR was registered on Thursday. The HC was hearing a petition by Mixed Martial Arts India to direct the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to grant it recognition. Since the IOA granted recognition to the Mixed Martial Arts Sports Federation of India, the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association recognised only it. In these circumstances, the petitioner's athletes are unable to participate in the first Asian Youth Championship in Bahrain between June 25 and 28. They noticed a woman crying in court. Federation advocate Adil Parsurampuria said she was "the athlete concerned". The judges said "she had a story to tell. Child rights body sends notice to Malviya for ‘divulging' minor victim's identity
Kolkata: The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) has sent a show-cause notice to BJP neta Amit Malviya on Friday for divulging the identity of a deceased Baruipur minor. Malviya was asked to reply within three days as to why he should not face prosecution under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015. Earlier, police said they had started a criminal case against those who had divulged the victim's identity. On Friday, WBCPCR chairperson Tulika Das wrote to Malviya that though he had posted a blurred photograph of the victim, she was "easily identifiable". Das wrote, "The identity of a deceased minor girl was disclosed, thereby violating Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of the Children) Act, 2015." On June 19, Malviya had posted on X: "In another shocking incident in Bengal, a young girl in Canning, South 24 Parganas, was brutally murdered and gang-raped on the night of 16 June, as per local reports. Such barbarity shakes the conscience." He also alleged that the administration was suppressing the incident, citing 'communal sensitivity'. He added, "We will not let this be buried.
