Jacquemus opens Los Angeles boutique

Fashion Network27-04-2025

It was impossible to miss the opening of the new Jacquemus boutique on Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles. Announced around a viral campaign on social media, the event invited the general public to come and discover the new space from 11 a.m., attracting hundreds of customers, most of them in Jacquemus outfits, ready to wait a few hours before treading the terracotta parquet floor of its new boutique.
Located at 8800 Melrose Avenue, a few steps from the cult Maxfield, Simon Porte-Jacquemus' new address set up a temporary market for the occasion, with multiple stalls of bananas, daisies and roses, all yellow. On the sidewalk, the banana-shaped Jacquemus mobile took guests in turn for a quick tour of West Hollywood.
After cutting the inauguration ribbon in front of a hundred people armed with their iPhones, the VIP cocktail party finally opened at 5 p.m. In attendance were a host of influencers, models, TV and reality TV stars, including Lori Harvey, Kristin Cavallari, Benito Skinner, Cole Sprouse, Noah Beck, Vinnie Hacker and Nicholas Chavez. Also present, Anwar Hadid -Bella and Gigi's little brother - designer Eli Russell Linnetz, director Luke Gilford and "White Lotus" actor Jon Gries.
Long time occupied by the John Varvatos brand, and taken over a year ago by the Louis Vuitton pop-up, which created a flamboyant set-up around the famous Pont Neuf bridge, the store occupies a surface area of 2,700 square feet.
Inside, terracotta brick floors complement limestone clay stucco walls. At the center of the boutique were two 10-meter-long sunshine-yellow sofas with striped cushions. Antique Egyptian vases, chairs by Jean Royère, mid-century chandeliers, ceramics by French artist Mathilde Martin and a table lamp by Frank Lloyd Wright displayed the designer's personal tastes. A 1999 photograph by David Hockney and a small bronze bather by Pierre-Auguste Renoir completed the decor.
Presented in preview was "La Galerie", a range of vintage items, each piece selected by the designer. This collection will begin with around 20 pieces of jewelry – earrings, brooches, necklaces, bracelets – that have a sculptural focus in addition to decorative objects such as boxes, small trays and keepsake dishes. Curated from vintage markets and galleries across Europe, the items primarily date between the 1920's and 1960's and showcase handcraft across various materials and techniques.
In a nod to Los Angeles and the Californian lifestyle, a selection of chrome objects was also on display, including dumbbells, yoga mats, skipping ropes and water bottles.
The Jacquemus boutique in Los Angeles is the fifth worldwide, after Paris, New York, London and Dubai.

Girls shouldn't shout?: Women break the mould at French metal festival

With around 60,000 visitors per day, the 18th edition of France's biggest metal festival wrapped up Sunday after four days of head-banging performances. Marked by loud guitars and guttural shouting, heavy metal has historically been associated with men and virility. On Friday, nine bands featuring at least one woman took to one of Hellfest's main stages, a notable step toward recognising women in the genre. Hellfest showcases around 180 bands spanning metal subgenres from thrash and black metal to hardcore punk, with major acts like Korn, Muse and Scorpions performing. Among the newer voices carving space in the scene is Camille Contreras, a chemical engineer by training and self-taught metalcore vocalist, who faced a backlash in 2023 after joining French band Novelists as their lead singer. "There were a few remarks, but I didn't really take them personally because they said 'a girl shouldn't shout'," Contreras told AFP. "I told myself 'this guy, he's just stupid'." Contreras proved her vocal strength during live shows, helping Novelists gain international traction with tours in the United States and China. Her four bandmates said the decision to bring her in went beyond voice, praising her performance style, stage presence, good mood, ability to convey atmosphere and diversity. Praised by her bandmates as "transgressive" for challenging "norms and many stereotypes", Contreras -- nicknamed the "devil's diva" -- fired up the Hellfest crowd during their Sunday set. She wasn't the only woman making waves at the festival. US rock giant Linkin Park, best known for hits like "In the End" and "Numb", returned to the Hellfest stage on Sunday with new vocalist Emily Armstrong, who joined in 2024 following the 2017 death of frontman Chester Bennington. "They were in the right state of mind by choosing to make a 180 degree U-turn, rather than creating a copy of Chester, and it's working really well," said Christie Medina-Gonzalez, programmer and artistic coordinator for Hellfest. 'Very good start' Women are still underrepresented at the festival but they are becoming "much more widespread now", according to Contreras. "All of the attitudes are evolving a little," she said. "Women are maybe less scared of showing who they are," she added, noting that "there are more and more female bands in all kinds of subgenres" of heavy metal, which nevertheless remains "very standardised" and "very masculine". Friday's stage dedicated to woman-fronted acts featured performances by the neo-Viking metal collective Heilung, from Scandinavia and Germany, alongside Dutch symphonic metal bands Epica and Within Temptation. The initiative is "a very good start to make women more visible", said Sharon den Adel, cofounder of Within Temptation with her husband and guitarist Robert Westerholt. "I know a lot of my colleagues had a lot of problems being accepted as a woman," Den Adel said. When the lead vocalist was growing up, people often asked who her idols were. Now, with more women playing guitar and playing drums, female performances are more visible, she said. As metal artists, women "will plant seeds in young girls' minds of, 'I can be this, this is also an option for me, maybe I can do this passion as well'".

Elsewhere in Milan menswear: Ralph Lauren, Brioni, Corneliani, Church's

Easily the most elegant accessory display in Milan this weekend was at Church's, which welcomed people into the Piccolo Teatro Studio Melato, an avant-garde brick theater with soaring tubular galleries. Pride of place went to a 1929 Shanghai model, first acquired in Cincinnati and donated to the brand by the son of a grateful customer. Designed as a halfway house between a tasseled golf shoe and a brogue, the original Shanghai No. 1 — carefully protected in a Perspex box — even had Church's logo cut-out soles. A look that helped inspire a great new selection of devilishly aged versions of the Shanghai for today. The key to any great pair of Church's is the brand's famed factory in Northampton, the shoemaking capital of the UK. Recently renovated, the plant is also the source of new shoes made in singular pieces of leather — where the pattern of wingtips is etched by lasers. Few shoe marques anywhere can provide the patina of a pair of Church's — a fact underlined by two gents hand-finishing some classic wingtips on the stage of the theatre. One trimmed the side with small sharp knives and sandpaper; the other applied French polish and mirror gloss from Saphir. Asked how best to shine a great pair of shoes, one gently explained: 'Actually, it's best to use old white T-shirts that have been washed plenty of times. The roughness and impurity are gone, and you get a great finish.'

Sir Paul Smith, at 78, makes his Milan catwalk debut

Don't try telling Sir Paul Smith you can't teach an old dog new tricks, after the British designer made his Milan debut with one of his nattiest collections in years. In the past couple of years, Smith has amassed a significant archive of over 4,600 looks, collecting them all in his hometown of Northampton — a visual memory that played a strong role in his fine collection. 'It's actually very exciting when one of our young designers on the team who is 20 years old comes back with a look that he thinks is cool and excites him,' beamed Sir Paul after his Saturday afternoon show. That said, Sir Paul himself was inspired by the very idea of bohemian travel and wandering around foreign markets looking for something exotic to buy. A key to the collection was Smith riffing on clothes and items he discovered in his formative years. This included a series of great crepe shirts printed with bright birds and flowers, inspired by the banks of the Nile. A trip with his wife, Pauline, to Cairo decades ago led to the Egyptian influences. In tailoring, he also lightened up the form and fabrics of his suits, reducing shoulder padding and leaving jackets unlined. Nostalgia for flea market finds also inspired some great berets, finished with pins and medallions. 'I've been coming to and enjoying Italy all my life, presenting my collections in Pitti at one stage, but never doing a show in Milan. It's about time,' cackled Smith, who is the proud owner of an estate in Tuscany. Success has also allowed Smith to become a notable property owner. If his first shop in Northampton was just three square meters, he now owns shops and showrooms throughout the world — from his Paris hôtel particulier to his large show space in Milan. 'I bought this place in 2001 and thought finally I should do something with it!' laughed the ever-sprightly Sir Paul, who dashed down two flights of stairs to take his extended ovation.
