Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos appeared to criticize the lack of discipline at his former club on the latest episode of the podcast he hosts with his brother Felix.
The German midfield maestro famously hung his boots up at the age of 34 around this time last year.
While the last time we saw him on the pitch was when eventual champions Spain beat his Germany team in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals, his club swansong was the sealing of an impressive La Liga, Spanish Super Cup and Champions League treble clinched by beating Borussia Dortmund at Wembley in the latter competition's decider.
Without Kroos around, as Carlo Ancelotti also had to shoehorn Kylian Mbappe into an attack that was fine as it was, Madrid finished 2024/2025 trophyless while bitter rivals FC Barcelona won every trophy on offer in Spain.
Kroos' compatriot Hansi Flick was the mastermind behind the shift in power in Spain, and his no nonsense brand of discipline, which saw him punish the likes of Jules Kounde and Inaki Pena for lateness, might have had something to do with it.
'With Hansi, some players have been left out of the team because they are late for a meeting,' Kroos first said, before adding 'this has happened several times at Barca'.
Kroos then indicated that Flick's hard line would have been unacceptable at the Bernabeu, which SPORT took as there being 'chaos in the locker room' during his era.
'They are different philosophies. At Real Madrid, they would have laughed. Many times you didn't know who was late, the player or the coach. It's a different mentality, not letting someone play because they are five minutes late for a meeting,' Kroos said.
They're just different. They're both fine. We could say that Flick's is typical of Germany," Kroos went on, while his brother claimed that some coaches from other countries, and not just theirs, would act like Flick to the lack of punctuality from some players.
Now in the dugout after Carlo Ancelotti took the Brazil job, former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso is tasked with changing the culture at the club, which could prove key to Los Blancos getting back on track and derailing Barca.

Bayern Munich Plot Pursuit of PSG Star, Barcelona Target in Major Winger Move

PSG have built the kind of depth that's put them one win away from a treble, but not everyone is content with their role. Under Luis Enrique, the Parisians captured a second straight Ligue 1 title and added the Coupe de France, with the Spanish manager using squad rotation to keep players fresh across all competitions. It's a strategy that has delivered results. Advertisement Still, not every player is satisfied being part of a rotation. Some believe they're ready for a bigger role, and Bradley Barcola appears to be one of them. The young forward is now attracting interest from Bayern Munich, putting his future in the spotlight. PSG standout remains on Bayern Munich's radarBayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl has left the team's training camp in Florida to focus on squad planning and hold talks with agents and other board members, according to Florian Plettenberg. As the search for a winger continues, Bayern are keeping an eye on whether Barcelona can complete a deal for Athletic Club's Nico Williams. Barcola remains high on their list, and AC Milan's Rafael Leão has also been discussed internally. Despite this rumor, Foot Mercato's Josué Cassé recently reported that Barcola isn't leaving PSG, as he remains a key part of the club's project and has no intention of moving on.

Kostas Tsimikas makes Trent Alexander-Arnold exit admission after Liverpool supporters 'saw it differently'

Kostas Tsimikas says "the whole world must respect" Trent Alexander-Arnold's decision to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid. But the Reds defender also accepts the supporters' right to view the departure differently to the squad itself. Advertisement Alexander-Arnold joined los Blancos at the beginning of the month after the Reds engineered a £10m transfer for him to leave a month before his contract technically expired, meaning the Premier League champions bagged a sizable sum for a player who was on the cusp of a move as a free agent. The West Derby-born defender was subjected to loud boos at Anfield when he made his second-half substitute appearance in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal last month and while Tsimikas says the team have not been offended by their former colleague's decision, he also understands the depth of emotion from those who reacted angrily. "After all, it's work. That was his choice, he wanted to see something else. Trent also goes to the best team, after Liverpool! (laughs). "Okay, they are choices, from then on the whole world must respect it. When you make this decision, you have to be ready to accept everything, we are our choices. He wanted to leave, he chose it. "From then on, you can see what he has given to the team, you see what Liverpool have got since Trent started playing. "All you can do is give him a good, warm round of applause. Tell him good luck. Because what he gave is too many [memories]. It will be difficult for any other player, even a transfer with a lot of money, to be able to do what Trent did. Advertisement "But yes, surely the locals saw it differently, they expected the Scouser to stay forever, until he hung up his boots. This is what creates an extra tension." Tsimikas added: "We within the team understood that he wants to leave, that there is no [obligation] to stay. "That's what he wanted from the beginning, he wanted to play for Real, so from the beginning of the season it seemed like it was the last season, he wanted something different, as he said. "I wish him all the best from the bottom of my heart, because we were very, very close. We made a lot of jokes together and it's hard to say goodbye to a player who every day we've been together for five years. Advertisement "I wish him all the best, without injuries and okay, you are a player, a great player, what can we discuss." Alexander-Arnold made his Real Madrid debut in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal in the Club World Cup.
