NSW Blues deliver blow to Qld Maroons with State of Origin Game 1 win in Brisbane
A dominant first half secured victory for New South Wales in the State of Origin opener 18-6, leaving the Maroons with a huge task to claim the shield as the series shifts away from Queensland. Indeed, the margin of victory for the favourites should have been greater were it not for struggles by Blues' kickers Nathan Cleary and Zac Lomax, who went one from five.

NSW scored three tries through silky backline play in the first half, two for winger Lomax and one for Brian To'o on the other side of the field. The To'o four-pointer was the highlight thanks to a brilliant catch and pass from Latrell Mitchell, who found his outside man under heavy pressure from the rushing Queensland defence.
Much of the pre-match discussion had centred around the ability for rookie centre Rob Toia to be able to contain Mitchell. Ultimately the 20-year-old acquitted himself well, and it was actually the Blues centre who experienced a mixed night. His handling error directly led to the Maroons' only try early in the second half, scored by Xavier Coates.
But it proved little more than a footnote for NSW, who have now won three straight Origin contests and look almost unbeatable in 2025. Victory was sealed with seven minutes to go with a miracle try for fullback Dylan Edwards. Sustained Blues pressure on the Maroons' line ended with a kick and one-handed take from Lomax, who then found Connor Watson. The danger seemed to be extinguished when Watson was wrapped up by three defenders. But he managed to pass the ball back to Edwards, who mashed it into the ground to put the game beyond doubt.
While the Blues controlled much of the match, the contest erupted early in the second half. The Blues were seeking to limit the damage during a period with To'o in the sin bin. Despite early errors, it looked they had done it too, when the Maroons butchered a scrum play 10m from the Blues' line. But on the first tackle, Jeremiah Nanai dislodged the ball from Mitchell and Coates scurried across in the corner.

Despite the missed Valentine Holmes conversion, there was newfound energy in a stadium that had been flat in the first half. It was amplified when crowd favourite Tom Dearden came on to spell Harry Grant at hooker. A succession of kicks pinned the Blues back, a run of repeat sets finally ending when Lomax swooped on a Cam Munster grubber, keeping the ball in play and winning a penalty. That was as close as the Maroons would come, as errors mounted for both sides before Edwards' match-sealing try. The home side appeared to finally cross with a minute to go, but Holmes' try was ruled out due to a forward pass.
Queensland were lucky to escape the first half down only 14-2 after a dominant period from the Blues. The visitors dominated yardage, out-gaining the Maroons 1,000m to 600m with tackles 233 to 162. For 39 minutes, set after set ended up down the Maroons' end, and the match appeared destined for a New South Wales victory.
But Queensland swung momentum back thanks to Coates, their towering right winger and best player on the night. With less than a minute to go before half-time, he forced his opponent To'o into a handling error off a kick, and then in the last play of the half, baited To'o into grabbing in a subsequent aerial contest. The result was Queensland's first points, a sin bin for To'o, and hope for the capacity crowd of more than 54,000 at Suncorp Stadium. Game two is in Perth before the series finishes in Sydney in July.

Ivan Cleary was left stunned and proud of his Penrith Panthers outfit after defeating the Warriors, despite missing his State of Origin stars, as fans urge the NRL to stop the competition during the rep schedule. There have been growing calls for the NRL to come up with a solution during the Origin period with a number of teams ravaged by injuries and selection issues. In the first bye round, the Panthers were decimated with five representatives ruled out. The Newcastle Knights hammered Penrith in their clash, which led to frustration over the quality and depth of teams forced to play during the Origin period. Coach Cleary was also left fuming prior to the clash against the Warriors knowing Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, Dylan Edwards, Brian To'o and Liam Martin would not fly from Perth to New Zealand and play against the Warriors. The coach was obviously fearing a similar result to the one against the Knights a few weeks ago considering he was fielding a similar said. Speaking last weekend, Cleary labelled the situation "unfair". He said: "The Origin players won't be playing because they can't. I don't think it's fair that we can't play... we should be able to make that decision. Through flights, we just can't get them there." The Warriors were flying-high and many predicted the home side to put another cricket score on the Panthers missing all their representatives. However, the Panthers showed pride in the jersey and their performance having defeated the Warriors 28-18. "Obviously the context is important, but just the way the boys went about it. Every time there wasn't something great, they got on with it and made up for it," Cleary said when asked about the win missing his Origin stars. "Just very happy for the boys and hopefully something we can build on. "I should mention the leadership, Scott you lose the calibre of the guys we had you need that leadership to step up. And it just helps the younger guys. Our leaders tonight were outstanding." When asked about the loss to the Knights a few weeks back, Cleary admitted it was on their mind. "I definitely think that was probably the starting point - they just wanted to prove to themselves and everyone that we're certainly better than what we showed that night," he added. "We've tried to build a culture here where it doesn't matter who's playing and you deliver a certain standard and whether you win or not." Fans were stunned at the Panthers win after so much was made of their missing stars. The depth of the Panthers made a mockery of the competition, but it was also a worrying loss for the Warriors who have been carrying so much momentum in recent weeks. But it was also the performance of young recruit Blaize Talagi that had fans excited. Without the influence of Nathan Cleary in the halves, Blaize Talagi enjoyed one of his best games in the jersey. The 20-year-old didn't start the beginning of the season with coach Cleary looking at Jack Cole to partner his son Nathan. Talagi was expected to slot right in after his move from the Parramatta Eels, but bided his time. But the Panthers five-eighth was instrumental for his side with his chief playmaker missing. Talagi scored a stunning solo try, but also assisted another when he took advantage of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak limping in the defensive line. And fans are feeling the Panthers team are starting to hum in time to make a late run to finals footy. Although Cleary made no excuse and claimed the team will finish where they deserve. "We'll finish where we deserve ... we're playing a bit of our brand of footy so at least we give ourselves a chance." Blaize Talagi is starting to show why Penrith brought him to the club. Roosters' stance on Daly Cherry-Evans unchanged
The Sydney Roosters remain keen on pursuing Daly Cherry-Evans despite his axing from the State of Origin set-up and the emergence of their own young halves. It comes as coach Trent Robinson reveals all five of his State of Origin representatives will back up for Saturday's match against North Queensland, who are resting Reuben Cotter and Reece Robson. The Roosters shaped as the front-runners for Cherry-Evans's signature after the premiership-winning halfback confirmed 2025 would be his 15th and final season at Manly. Since then, Cherry-Evans has been dropped as Queensland captain and endured patchy form for an out-of-sorts Manly side fighting to keep pace with the top eight. The Roosters, meanwhile, have unearthed an out-and-out first-grader in rookie halfback Hugo Savala and also have highly rated Sam Walker signed through 2027. Sandon Smith has proven a capable back-up playmaker too, particularly impressive in a big Anzac Day win over St George Illawarra. The Roosters have held preliminary talks with Cherry-Evans but the 36-year-old has indicated his immediate focus is on the 2025 season, not finalising his future. Robinson previously endorsed the club's pursuit of Cherry-Evans and has not changed his position amid the events of recent months. "Nothing has moved, we haven't had any discussions or anything like that. But there hasn't been any difference on what I said last time either," he said. "We said he's going to wait so we've just been getting on with our business until that time." Cherry-Evans has been instrumental in big wins over Penrith and Brisbane in recent months but most recently struggled to ignite the side in a 28-8 thrashing from last-placed Gold Coast. Robinson has been unconcerned over public commentary surrounding Cherry-Evans's form this season. "That hasn't been a discussion for us," he said. The coach sees a world where all four of Cherry-Evans, Savala, Walker and Smith can co-exist at the club next season. Savala's preferred position is in the halves but his 194cm frame makes him a candidate for opportunities in the back row or outside backs. Smith, meanwhile, was a regular on the bench before five-eighth Luke Keary left the club in the most recent off-season. "We're in a good spot, I feel like we're developing really well," Robinson said. "We want to keep pushing forward in being the best team that we can be. There's no wavering on what I said (about wanting to pursue Cherry-Evans) but that time will come." The Cowboys will have Queensland duo Jeremiah Nanai and Tom Dearden on deck as they fight to bounce back from their 58-4 hiding at the hands of the Dolphins last week. But NSW hooker Robson and Maroons forward Cotter will be given extra time to rest following the Maroons' 26-24 game-two win on Wednesday. "(They're) just carrying a couple of niggles that we don't want to make worse, given that we've got a long road ahead," said coach Todd Payten.

Nicolas Jackson sent off as Chelsea implode against Flamengo
Nicolas Jackson was sent off as Chelsea crashed to a 3-1 loss to Flamengo at the Club World Cup. Pedro Neto fired the Blues ahead early on but Enzo Maresca's side imploded in the second half in Philadelphia. Their woes were compounded when Wallace Yan wrapped up the scoring late on, adding to earlier goals from fellow substitute Bruno Henrique and veteran Danilo. The result – played out in front of a crowd of 54,019 at Lincoln Financial Field – left Chelsea with a win and a loss from their two outings in Group D having earlier looked set to take a giant stride towards the last 16. It made for a disappointing full debut for new striker Liam Delap, who had been brought into the side for Jackson, but a notable scalp for Flamengo manager Filipe Luis, formerly of the London club. Chelsea grabbed the lead when Neto benefited from a fortunate ricochet after being struck by an attempted clearance from Wesley. Gerson should have equalised when he cut back inside Colwill to create an opportunity but his mishit shot was intercepted by Trevoh Chalobah. It rebounded to Gonzalo Plata but he somehow poked wide. Advertisement Chelsea were inches away from a second when Leo Pereira, under pressure from Delap, clipped the ball narrowly past his own post but the Blues had little control. They had another escape when Sanchez tipped over from Plata. The equaliser came just after the hour when Plata headed back across goal and Henrique raced in to pounce at the back post. Chelsea were reeling and were stung again just moments later as Henrique turned provider to head back a corner for Danilo to volley in.
