Major supermarket chain closing 60 locations
We're in the midst of very strange economic times. On the one hand, unemployment is low, and the economy is supposedly in good shape. Inflation is also cooling. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter So then why are so many people facing higher costs than ever and struggling to keep up with their bills? Related: Walmart makes bold move to help inflation-battered consumers Part of the problem stems from the fact that while inflation isn't horrendously elevated these days, it's been sitting at higher-than-average levels for years. And as a result, a lot of people have been paying more for essentials since 2021. Unfortunately, tariff policies could make matters even worse as the year progresses. Right now, there's a pause on tariffs. But once it ends, we could see the price of all sorts of products increase. And one key category that's likely to rise is food. This stretch of pesky inflation has changed the way a lot of people spend their money. These days, many can't afford to shell out extra for restaurant meals, so they're turning to their neighborhood supermarkets for groceries instead. Related: Costco quietly pulls popular product, upsets fans This trend is clearly bad news for the restaurant industry. But it's good news for grocery chains. Even if food costs increase once tariffs take hold, consumers will have no choice but to stock their pantries and fridges. And as it gets even costlier to dine at restaurants, the demand for groceries could increase. Given these trends, you'd think grocery stores these days would be making plans to open their doors, not close them. And to be fair, some of them are. Aldi, for example, is working on an expansion strategy that will add 225 stores to its lineup by the end of 2025. But one major supermarket chain is doing the opposite. Kroger, one of the largest supermarket chains in the country, is making plans to close 60 stores in the next 18 months. Related: Costco, Trader Joe's have one huge problem customers hate The Cincinnati-based grocer says it's specifically looking to shutter locations that have been underperforming. The move should free up money on Kroger's balance sheet to move forward with other plans, such as remodeling existing stores in need of a refresh. The company said earlier this year that it's looking to invest in an improved customer experience. Kroger is also looking to expand its selection of private-label products. At a time when consumers are looking to conserve funds as much as possible, offering up store brand products at competitive prices makes sense for Kroger. So does shuttering less profitable locations, to a degree. But if demand for groceries picks up, Kroger could end up regretting the decision to close some of those stores, especially if it means losing customers to competitors. At the end of its most recent fiscal year, Kroger operated over 2,700 stores across 35 states. The 60 planned closures represent just a small portion of the company's overall footprint. Costco's Kirkland Lager Is One Of World's Best Beers, Say Competition Judges
Costco's Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager has earned top medals at two of the world's most prestigious beer competitions. Most recently it took home silver at the World Beer Cup Phealan Robinson One of the best helles lagers anywhere on Earth is Costco's Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager, judges at the World Beer Cup ruled recently, and it's not the first prestigious award the beer has won. The Kirkland Signature Hellles is brewed by Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon. Though Deschutes is one of the largest craft breweries in the U.S., its Helles-style lager was not traditionally one of its better-known beers. In fact, the lager, which was then called Prinz Crispy, was an obscure small-batch offering until it won gold at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival. That win helped lead to a collaboration between Costco and Deschutes to ramp up production of the beer and rename it, but the recipe remained unchanged. Today, the beer's combination of light, malt-forward character and approachability is continuing to earn impressive awards. The lager took home the silver medal in the highly competitive Helles Lager category at this year's World Beer Cup. As Peter Skrbek, Deschutes' CEO, told me in a video call, it is one thing to win an award for a beer brewed on a small scale but 'it's another thing when you have a scaled-up production beer that's also taking down medals.' The Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup are the two most prestigious beer competitions in the U.S. and, arguably, the world. Many of the beers that medal at each festival have limited distribution and are sometimes only available at the taproom at the brewery where they were produced. Kirkland Lager on the other hand, is an award-winning beer that is sold at every Costco that can legally sell private-label beer. It costs $13.99 per 12-pack. Costco's Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager has won two of the most coveted competition medals in craft beer. Phealan Robinson A few years back, Robin Johnson, Deschutes' head brewer, was looking for a beer to enter into the Great American Beer Festival. 'He's like, 'What if we really went after lager and really went competitive on lager?' Skrbek said. 'So he spent a ton of time developing this Helles recipe.' The initial beer was brewed at Deschutes' 10-barrel brewing system at its Bend brewpub. The goal was a limited-edition beer for competitions, not wide distribution. 'There was never an intent of this beer being a commercial beer, in part because, ironically, the cost of making it, because of the raw ingredients, was extremely high,' Srkbek said. Costco has carried Deschutes beer for years. In a meeting between the Deschutes team and Russ York, a Costco buyer, they began to discuss doing something for the Kirkland Signature brand. 'I said that we would like to do something that was NOT an IPA,' York explains in an email to me. 'I felt our members needed something more sessionable and refreshing. IPAs are everywhere, and everyone has their favorite.' Srkbek had just the right beer in mind. 'I was like, 'Well, man, you know, we just won this gold medal for this beer that we have really no big plan for commercially. How awesome would it be to introduce this gold medal-winning beer to members?' York liked the idea and was completely sold as soon as he tasted the beer. 'I loved it because it had the refreshing taste of a light beer, but it had substance,' York wrote. 'With standard domestic light beers, it just quenches your thirst, not leaving an impression. But the lager does both.' A Craft Beer Available in Bulk To brew the rebranded Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager, Deschutes moved production of Prinz Crispy from its 10-barrel system to its 150-barrel production brewery. Producing such large quantities of beer itself wasn't difficult, Srkbek said, but sourcing ingredients and handling the distribution logistics at the scale necessary wouldn't have been possible without Costco's help. York declined to share sales numbers. 'I can say that it is selling quite well and actually did more than we anticipated, given it launched in the off-season for this style of beer—winter,' he wrote. Srkbek couldn't offer any sales numbers either but did say the beer has impacted overall U.S. demand for Tettnang hops, which are a key part of its recipe. 'We basically consumed the entire domestic Tettnang crop last year, which is an insane thought. And as a result, we have more farmers planting Tettnang,' Srkbek said. Despite that scale, Srkbek is proud that the quality of that beer has not slipped: a view that was validated when the beer took home silver at the World Beer Cup. 'The cool thing there is that it is the production beer. It's not a different batch. It's right out of the same batch that went to members and into the warehouses at Costco.' Did you buy a coveted Costco gold bar last year? Here's how much it's worth today amid soaring market prices
You may have struck gold — quite literally. Costco customers who purchased a gold bar last year are now finding the item soaring in value thanks to increased demand. Since the retail company began selling these bars in 2023, they've been a draw for customers, as investors historically tend to turn to gold during times of geopolitical instability, inflation and concern over the US dollar. According to CNBC, gold traded around $3,390 per ounce as of Tuesday morning, about 45% higher than it was at this time last year and near a recent record high. In June 2024, the listed purchase price for a one-ounce gold bar at Costco was $2,399.99. The spot price as of June 17, 2025, was $3,390, which is an unrealized gain of $990 and a 41.3% percentage increase. If you bought the bar of gold last year, you might be considering selling it for a profit — but it's not that simple. The spot price is a benchmark for price negotiation, but sellers typically receive about 5-10% less than that, depending on where and how they sell their gold, Jon Ulin, a certified financial planner based in Boca Raton, Florida, told CNBC. 'I would avoid private buyers or marketplaces like eBay or Facebook Marketplace,' Ulin shared. 'You're dealing with a high-value item and there's a risk of encountering less-than-reputable individuals.' Meanwhile, brick-and-mortar bullion dealers offer in-person evaluations and immediate payment — and may pay 1-5% below the spot price, which is often more than pawn shops offer, according to a 2024 Wall Street Journal report. Regardless, it's important to vet potential buyers on platforms such as Yelp, Google or the Better Business Bureau to help avoid lowball offers or scams. Any profits made from selling gold can also be taxed at a higher rate than other investments since the IRS typically classifies physical gold as a collectible, according to CNBC. A 'collectible' classification means that federal long-term capital gains can be taxed at a rate up to 28%, and if it's sold within one year, profit is taxed as ordinary income, which could lead to an even higher rate depending on the seller's tax bracket. In May, Costco restricted purchases on the coveted gold bars, limiting customers to up to two bars with only one transaction per membership every 24 hours. Around the same time, a finance influencer who purchased one of the retailer's gold bars sold the nugget nearly a year later for a $600 in profit. Humphrey Yang had reportedly purchased the one-ounce bar for $2,359 from Costco in April 2024 and sold it in March 2025 at the bullion dealer Witter Coin in San Francisco for $2,955.42.
