CM inaugurates excavation in Lakkundi
Gadag: With the inauguration of the excavation of the historical site Kote Veerabhadreshwara Temple in Lakkundi by the chief minister,
Siddaramaiah
, on Tuesday, hopes of getting crucial clues have multiplied among history enthusiasts of the state and nation as well.
Meanwhile, the Lakkundi Heritage Area Development Authority is preparing for an open museum on the lines of Warangal in Telangana.
CM Siddaramaiah said that the govt is committed to establishing an open museum in Lakkundi. "This village, Lakkundi, was the capital of the Chalukyas, who constructed temples and a fort here. Remnants of these structures have provided historical information. We provided the required funds to unearth historical structures and artefacts, and that is why conservation became possible here," he claimed.
He attributed law minister HK Patil's interest as the reason for launching an excavation in Lakkundi. He thanked the residents of Lakkundi who transferred their land and houses, where relics were found, to the govt.
It should be noted that Lakkundi is one of the 844 sites notified for protection. Govt departments like tourism, archaeology, museums, and heritage organised a special campaign between Nov 22 to 24 last year to collect relics from the doorsteps of villagers.
The campaign collected over 1,500 relics, and they will be displayed in an open museum of 4 acres. The govt announced funds for the museum in the current year's budget.
A team of experts already visited Warangal and opined that a museum better than the one in Warangal can be established here.
According to Patil, who is also in charge of Gadag district, Lakkundi villagers are very cooperative with the excavation. "Experts have said that if 27 families leave their houses, five temples can be traced.
Most of the house owners agreed to give up their properties, and we will provide alternative accommodation to them," he shared.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) conducted a study and submitted a nomination to get a world heritage tag for Lakkundi. The govt is mulling submitting a request to the International Council on Monuments and Sites to add Lakkundi to the world heritage temporary list.
Gadag residentse believe that Lakkundi could become a bigger world heritage site than Hampi if it is excavated and developed properly. The previous excavation was in 2004-05 in Lakkundi, and various important relics were found then.

Shahapur drinking water project to be inaugurated by Karnataka CM in August
A most-anticipated drinking water project, being taken up at a cost of ₹70 crore for Shahapur city in Yadgir district, is likely to be inaugurated by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in August. The project to provide drinking water to Shahapur city from the Sannati bridge-cum-barrage constructed across the Bhima river is almost completed and is expected to be inaugurated at the end of August by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The project, which was implemented by the Drinking Water Supply and Sewage Board, was delineated to provide drinking water to the estimated 1.51 lakh population of Shahapur up to 2050. The project, which comprised laying a pipeline of 18 kilometres stretching from the Bhima river to a filter bed located in the city, has been estimated at ₹ 70 crore. Apart from Shahapur city, two villages – Ingalagi and Madnal – will also get the water from the project. 'The water will be supplied to each house through taps after storing in two tanks, with a capacity of 15 lakh litres each, established in different zones under the AMRIT 2.0 project,' Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, Minister for Small Scale Industries and also district in-charge, explained to the media after inspecting the ongoing work near Bheema river on June 21. The officers are prepared to carry out a formal examination after full completion of the project in the next two weeks. This examination likely involves adherence to standards and overall effectiveness in providing clean and safe drinking water to the community. 'The Chief Minister will inaugurate the project since this would be a significant development work for the people of Shahapur city as promised,' Mr. Darshanapur said. The future projects for the taluk are Praja Soudha at a cost of ₹16 crore, drainage at a cost of ₹292 crore, Moraraji Desai Residential School in Ukkinal and Sirwal at a cost of ₹16 crore, B.R. Ambedkar Residential School at a cost of ₹21 crore and Minority Girls Hostel at a cost of ₹9 crore; Boys Residential School at a cost of ₹8 crore; School rooms at a cost of ₹4 crore; and a compound wall at a cost of ₹2 crore in Sagar village. 'These projects will be implemented soon,' Mr. Darshanapur said.

Ahead of Delhi visit, Siddaramaiah meets Governor to discuss pending Bills with the President
Ahead of his visit to Delhi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday met the Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to discuss the Bills that are pending with the President's office for assent and those that have been returned seeking clarification. According to sources, the Chief Minister is scheduled to meet President Draupadi Murmu to discuss the pending Bills. Sources said five Bills are pending with the President currently, and three Bills have been sent back for clarification. He was accompanied by Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar when he met the Governor. Among the Bills pending with the President are the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2015; the Registration (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The three Bills that have been returned for clarification are the Criminal Law Amendment Ordinance, 1944 (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2022; the Registration (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2024; and the Karnataka (Mineral Rights and Minerals Bearing Lands) Tax Bill, 2024. Sources in the Chief Minister's Office said Mr. Siddaramaiah has scheduled events in Raichur on Monday, after which he would leave for Delhi from there. The meeting with the President has been scheduled for Tuesday.

"People want to know how CM will respond," says BJP's Basavaraja Bommai on HK Patil's letter on illegal mining cases
Gadag (Karnataka) [India], June 22 (ANI): Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said that the question of the people is how Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will respond to Law Minister HK Patil's letter, in which he expressed dissatisfaction over the government's handling of illegal mining cases. Bommai said that 90 per cent of illegal mining cases in the state remain unresolved, pointing to concerns raised by Law Minister HK Patil. Speaking to the media after inaugurating the tile and granite showroom, Bommai said, 'HK Patil has brought out the most important point that 90 per cent of the cases registered in the mine are not settled. They (Congress) are still in power... The question of the people of the state is how the chief minister will respond to the case raised by his own cabinet members...' Regarding the Congress MLA BR Patil's statement, he said, '... It is very clear that there is no respect in Congress for those who speak against corruption...' Meanwhile, explaining the Karnataka government's Yettinahole project, state Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that the government has decided to deliver the Yettinahole water to Kolar by 2027. He mentioned that the forest department has discussed the project's issues. Land acquisition and financial issues related to the construction of a balanced reservoir in Bairagonda, Lakkenahalli, were also discussed in the meeting with the forest department. DK Shivakumar informed that the changes in the project will take place based on the suggestions of the ministers and asserted that he would study everything and raise the issue in the upcoming cabinet meeting. 'Our government's resolve is to deliver Yettinahole water to Kolar by 2027. We have already discussed the issues related to this project with the Forest Department, the land acquisition process, land acquisition and financial issues related to the construction of a balanced reservoir in Bairagonda, Lakkenahalli. Therefore, we visited the site of these works and inspected them. The changes in this project have been made based on the suggestions of the ministers. There are also some technical aspects here. I will study everything and raise this issue in the next cabinet meeting. I am not worried even if other projects are delayed, the CM has directed me to complete the Yettinahole project on priority', DK Shivakumar told reporters on Saturday. (ANI)
