PFBC: Cold-weather life jacket requirement still in effect
PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is reminding all anglers and boaters that the annual cold-weather life jacket requirement is still in effect.
As the weather begins to warm, the PFBC understands that it can be easy to forget the requirement, however, it will be in effect through April 30. From Nov. 1 through April 30, boaters are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while underway or at anchor on boats less than 16 feet in length or on any kayak, canoe or paddleboard.
'This time of year, despite the balmy springtime temperatures, it can be a tragic time for boaters who don't wear their life jackets,' Mark Sweppenhiser, Director of the PFBC's Bureau of Boating, said. 'On sunny days when warm air temperatures draw us outdoors for our favorite activities like fishing and boating, please remember water temperatures are still bitterly cold and present tremendous danger to someone who falls into the water.'
Sudden cold-water immersion occurs when a person is unexpectedly plunged into cold water. The PFBC noted that cold-water shock can result in water inhalation, leading to panic, hyperventilation or the inability to swim.
While nearly 80% of all boating fatalities occurred because boaters were not wearing life jackets, since the mandatory life jacket wear law was enacted in 2012, the PFBC has seen a 50% drop in boating incidents resulting in fatalities during the cold weather months.

PFBC: High waters pose danger to Pennsylvania boaters
(WHTM) — Pennsylvania boaters looking to enjoy the first days of summer should take caution, officials said. He added conditions in most of PA's waterways are not fit for beginners. Locally, the Millersburg Ferry suspended service this weekend citing high river levels. Other than the danger of swollen rivers and creeks, storms have left hazardous debris such as downed trees that boaters may have difficulty seeing. 'If you arrive at your boating location and the water is running high and fast, and visibility is poor, please consider waiting to go boating on another day or in another location where conditions are better,' Sweppenhiser said. Avoid these Midstate locations with high levels The commission recommends all boaters take safety precautions during high water: Wear a properly fitted life jacket Never boat alone and always leave a float plan Check water levels and weather forecasts before heading out Carry a fully charged cell phone Cover mouth and nose if fallen, and stay with the boat Call 911 in an emergency It added lakes are a safer alternative to rivers and creeks during periods of high water. Beach at Raystown Lake closed until further notice due to E. coli levels
HUNTINGDON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Tatman Run Beach at Raystown Lake will be closed to swimmers after the most recent testing showed higher levels of E. coli. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Raystown Lake, a recent water sample that was taken from the swimming area showed that there was a high level of E. coli bacteria present. Due to this, the beach will be closed until further notice. It will reopen once the bacteria level is back within the 'lower 'safe' levels. The boat launch and picnic area will remain open, along with the beach itself. However, swimming will be off-limits. The engineers added that the bacteria levels fluctuate daily and can vary greatly from place to place. They also believe that heavy rain and the runoff it causes most likely played a role in the high levels of bacteria.
